Title: 90s Japanese Legends
Post by: CALL_911 on December 03, 2017, 01:18:18 PM
Rules:
1. Pick
2. Explain why

I'll take the NSX. It was a bespoke chassis, it's the least compromised of all of them, I think it's one of the most beautiful cars ever made- inside and out. Its cockpit remains possibly my favorite interior of all time. The first NSX is probably one of my top 5 favorite cars of all time.

Toss up between the FD and the NSX.  The FD was one of the most beautiful cars of that decade.  Perhaps the best-looking car Mazda ever produced.  Incredibly sorted chassis and a unique engine.  Of course, said engines are known to be a bit problematic.

NSX was the first Japanese car to legitimately be considered a rival to the European exotics.  Plus it had Honda reliability.  Love the howl of that V6.  The car was simply excellent.

I'd pick the NSX. It was the ultimate expression of balanced, holistic Honda-ness. High performance but also extremely well rounded, with the right amount of power for the chassis and the power produced using a revolutionary and efficient technology (VTEC).

The FD RX7 is prettier than the NSX, though not the most reliable from what I recall?

Tough choice. NSX is an easy pick, but is it as sexy as a Supra sport roof with no spoiler? I don't know.

Much as I like the Supra, the NSX is way better looking

For whatever reason I'm expecting some love for the GT-R

The NSX is more important, but personally I cannot turn away from the sheer technological excess and undeniable beauty of the FD. It's one of the most beautiful cars of the last..... 30? 40? 50 years? And it is a low compromise driver's car.

I can't pick the GT-R because I'd prefer a '69 Skyline

What about the Z32 300ZX TT? It was a force of the '90s.

Less exotic I think; I'd seen many more 300ZXen than FDs and Supras for sure.

NSX.

Because legendary and game changing.

Skyline.

Because Gran Turismo.

Ehhh, the 3000GT/Dodge Stealth would qualify as less exotic IMO as well.  Like, I've seen a 3000GT/Stealth in the flesh, but never any of the others.

I think this is the order I'd rank my desire for them:

1. NSX
2. Skyline
3. RX-7
4. Supra
5. 3000GT

For a DD, I'd probably go for the Skyline first.

I guess I should have said only-car instead of DD.  I'd DD an NSX, too, if I had other vehicles in the stable for weather and utility.  Assuming I can afford an NSX, I could probably afford a second vehicle, too.

I think 3kGTs were more popular up north because AWD (and FWD on base models).

Facelifted (97-01) NA1 NSX

They sound raw as fuck and with ITBs it's just better than the rest

I chose the NSX, though it was hard with the FD in there. The FD is prettier, but the NSX is arguably the better car. Just so balanced and I like the interior better. And the sound of the V6 is a bit better than the rotary to me.

I really like the R33, but to me the pinnacle was the R34.

I don't know about the NSX looking better. But I generally do prefer front engine proportions to mid engine these days.

Makes sense.  Those and Talons were pretty popular rice-mobiles around here just before and during my teenage years after they'd all had a chance to start rusting through and depreciating to teenager affordability.

One of the better Supra pics I've seen, but for some reason I was never a fan of it. Always thought it looked heavy and bloated.

IMO, the MKIV Supra photographs better than it looks in person.  I've found them kind of bloated-looking in person as well.

They also had an EF Civic hatchback Hot Wheels I really wanted. Couldn't rationalize buying both (though it would cost me a total of $2)

Certain angles and wheel sizes seem to add to its bloated look.

I'm the second Supra voter, and the only reason is because this was a very common video game racing car, a big part of the whole fast Japanese fast car/VTEC/dropped Civic/Acura Integra automotive subculture.
Which I'm not really into, but for what it's worth, always thought the Japanese character on the Hayabusa (bike) was damn cool. It means "Peregrine Falcon".

All the 90s Japanese legends look dumpy as hell in person now.  Time and ricers have ravaged them all.

I saw a pristine MkIV a couple of months ago.  With stock wheels and stock ride height, they look a little like a clown shoe.  FD3 RX-7s still look great today.  I think the 3KGT still looks good.  Z32 300ZX still looks good, though definitely getting a little dated.

I'm not saying the cars look dumpy in the abstract.  Just that whenever you actually see one on the road, they're generally in shit condition and look out of place.

NSXs + Supras have high costs of entry and you have to be OCD to keep an FD running

3000GT/300ZX do generally look like shit though as do most modified ~$5K cars
