BMW X7 M Performance Crossover Already Under Consideration

BMW, it should come has no surprise, is hard at work bringing a new three-row flagship crossover to market. But before the highly anticipated new X7 arrives, word has it that the automaker is already considering an M performance variant.

According to BMWBLOG, the debate is already being waged in the halls of BMW's headquarters in Munich as to whether such a model should be made.

Given that the top-of-the-line X7 M50i is already expected to pack 523 horsepower (390 kW) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque – courtesy of the M850i's new 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 – the mounting speculation has it that the X7 M could boast a solid 600 hp (447 kW) or so.

That would make it even more powerful than the outgoing X5 M (and X6 M), which boasts 575 hp (429 kW). It'd also pip the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63, with its 577 hp (430 kW), and the 575-hp (429-kW) Range Rover Sport SVR and 557-hp (416 kW) Range Rover SVAutobiography.

The question is whether BMW will approve such a model for the full-on M treatment, which has traditionally been reserved for less bulky vehicles. In the 46 years of the M division and 41 years of the 7 Series, the Bavarian automaker has yet to produce a full-on M7 sedan – the current M750Li coming the closest with its 6.6-liter twin-turbo V12 (borrowed from Rolls-Royce) kicking out 602 hp (449 kW) but stopping short of an M7 designation.

But then, as BMWBLOG points out, the idea of an M-badged crossover seemed unthinkable before the first X5 M was released in 2010. So suffice it to say, we'll be watching this development rather closely to see how it shakes out, if it ever does.

There was a time when the 8 Series got it's M name yanked because it was not pure enough, to much of a GT.

BMW also said their M cars would never be turbocharged.

Paging MCM for some justifying BMWSPIN

High end SUVs sell a lot with fat profit margins. Why leave that money on the table? Because so called enthusiasts who are never buying a new BMW anyway bitch about it?

In any case this full-on X7M is  not confirmed. They'll probably stop at the M50i level for it.

These as well as any other SUV M/AMG/RS/Hellwhatever of course make no sense other than dick-measuring contests. But those contests are worth a lot of money for car companies so I can't see by what logic BMW shouldn't sit at that table as a profit-maximizing entity.

Obviously we see the business case. More ///M badges = more Euros. But if ///M is brand currency, the inflation rate at this point is downright Venezuelan.

Hyperbole. People who actually buy full on M cars can still tell the difference. You should hear us go on for hours at our club dinners about how we won't allow anything but full M car owners as members. Yeah, we are assholes.

10% of all Mercedes sold in the U.S. are AMG models. When the banker gets his bonus and it's time to trade in the GL AMG SUV, and he already has a Tesla as his other car, and his bonus is not big enough to get a Bentayga with his 2 kids in private school —> what should he get?

Answer: BMW X7M

Your ///M club spending more energy discussing exclusion by badge than the value and meaning of said badge speaks to my point way better than I could

So your group would embrace someone with an X7 ///M, but scoff at someone with a pristine 850CSi or M535iS? You should change the name of your group to the BMW ///MSRP club

The 850CSI has an M engine and model code, and in fact in Germany is listed as an M8 in the vehicle registration papers, so it might get a pass.

We´ve debated this endlessly with some in favour and some against. The fact that there is an official unreleased true M8 prototype at BMW disqualifies the 850CSi. That's our stance so far. M535i (the old one) is ok.

We love'em but we're an M club. It's a moot point because Alpinas have never been sold here.

I'm more interested in BMW finally making a higher performance version of their 2.0.  Wonder what else they gonna put it in.

That interior

Yes, but that front facia... Someone needs to tell BMW that kidney enlargement is not a positive thing.

Looks like the pictures were taken in Wyoming. I guess they saved some money and dragged the X7 over there with all the RR Cullinans.
