Question now is what happens for rear seat occupants.... side view of the old one clearly demonstrates a headroom hump
Supposedly a new 4.0L V8TT as well.
From that picture it looks like they took the arc on the roofline higher rather than flattening the roof like on the current model. That may well have kept the passenger headroom while giving a more pleasing shape as the roof line carries down the back of the car. It makes it look more like a 911.
How can you tell they fixed the butt with a picture of the front?

Also I don't think the rear has been slimmed down so much as the entire roofline has been rounded to give the illusion that it has.

I never liked the Panamera. Still don't.
It's a hideous design, IMO. The Aston Martin Rapide, while no beauty, flows better from a design POV. The Rapide actually looks sleek and sporty. The Panamera looks like an overweight pig.
I liked the last one, but this looks awesome.

The Rapide had no flow! It had such terrible proportions. It looked like someone bolted doors to a DB9.
!!!
I just can't see the appeal. If I'm buying a Porsche, I want a 911. And if I already have a 911, I don't want a sedan that looks exactly like my sports car just with more doors tacked on. Variety is the spice of life and all that.
I would rather a Macan than a Panamera... but if people are still buying AMG S-Classes then there is a place for them. 2+ ton "performance vehicles" don't make much sense to me, but I don't question the market.

I like the Macan too, but why would you take one over a Panamera?
Panamera will destroy it in performance, much more room, and now it looks a lot better too.

I would buy a vehicle like this for luxury/status/looks, not performance. Seems a little pointless to be able to get from 0-60 in 3 seconds in a 2 ton plus car with an automatic transmission. Plus if the Macan's interior specs are close to the Q5 (wheelbase and exterior is almost identical) and this new Panamera stays about the same size as the old one the Macan is way roomier. I love the improvements to the design, and in its class the Panamera would be my pick even before the redesign, but the whole large luxury sedan class has zero appeal to me.
...What?

I mean we can play copypasta all day one way or another:
http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/cars-trucks/Porsche_Macan/Interior/ (http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/cars-trucks/Porsche_Macan/Interior/)
Quote"There's enough space in the back seat for two medium-sized adults or three kids. Headroom is impressive, given the coupe-like flow of the Macan's roof"
Macan interior might be a lot different from the Q5, because the Q5's back seat and total leg room is bigger than the Panamera's  Q5 does have sliding rear seats though.
In any case I prefer small CUVs to big sedans, so even if the Panamera is roomier it doesn't matter to me.
I've sat in both and would really prefer to ride in a Panamera over a Macan
OK, I am happy that you have arrived at that conclusion. Being that I would buy a car like this to drive, rather than be driven in, and I don't like large sedans, I would still get the Macan over the Panamera. But they have definitely cleaned up the Panamera's looks big time.

It doesn't appear they've changed the overall shape that much. They did alter the shape of the side glass, which now flows with the shape of the car more and makes it appear less hunch-backed. Amazing what small details can do.
If you're going to go "full sedan", then why limit the backseat to two passengers? There's so many times in a pinch you need to carry a third person in the back. That alone would make me get something else if I were in the market. It's a very limiting feature for a sedan. Unless you're in a family with an only child, mom or dad can never drop off or pick up a friend to the soccer field or bring to a dinner outing.

No one in this market cares, and two buckets feels luxurious.

This isn't really marketed towards people who have to haul the kids and their friends to soccer practice. That's what Escalades and similar luxury buses are for. This is an executive's car. It's meant to occasionally take clients and colleagues out to dinner meetings and golf outings. Maybe transport another couple out on a double-date.

I think they made a big alteration to the rear hatch. The original was bulbous like a CR-V. The new one looks a lot sleeker and faster, at the expense of headroom and cargo space. 2o6 is right though, better to see some real world non-camo shots.

Scroll down a bit and you can get a photo with a slider with the new and old Panameras. Looks like the C pillar treatment helped, and so did extending the trunk lid.
I think they increased the tumblehome, but they could go further and make it look better. Also, the side vents are too vertical. If they leaned them forward or back, they could have added even more emotion in the design. Or added a detail that carries from the front around to the sides to tie everything in front of the A pillars together. Right now I don't feel the front fascia, hood, and fenders meshes well with the rest of the design.

That tool is pretty damn cool. Again amazing to see how some tiny tweaks here and there can make such a huge difference. The big issue they resolved was eliminating that sea of metal around the C-pillar. Bigger wheels, more glass, and the illusion of a slimmer tail by lengthening it. Pretty brilliant. It's basically the same exact car.
I agree that the side vents are not "dynamic" enough. Front could probably be a bit more exciting but I think the more important thing is that it looks like a modern Porsche. Plus with those top mount turbo engines and pedestrian regs it's actually pretty good. I hope R&T does one of their design analyses on this.

When I saw the pictures when it debuted on the auto show circuit I thought it was horrendous, just awful, but after I'd seen one in the 'flesh' my feelings about it took a complete 180°.
I think it is a sexy, sexy car. Absolutely none of its competitors are anything like it, save perhaps the Maserati Quattroporte. Why settle for some boring Audi, BMW, Lexus or Mercedes-Benz? The controversial part of the styling is obviously the hind end which on first glance is too fat and stubby but from afar it looks remarkably similar to a 911 (in principle).
I thought a four-door Porsche was heresy but now I applaud them for the effort. If I was the kind of person who wanted a car in that class the first one I'd test drive would be the Panamera.
Don't forget this version is coming still.

It's cool and all but I think people are ooohing and ahhhing a bit because the model it's replacing was not very attractive. Taken by itself, it doesn't scream gorgeous. Exterior wise it's probably stylistically on par with a model S for me.

This is probably not an unfair assessment, but even still, it's much better looking than all its competitors besides the Model S, and IMO went from one of the worst looking sedans out to one of the best with what looks like a new rear door and bigger wheel wells. Worthy of praise IMO.
And if we did the 2 Porsche household thing mine would have to be a sports car. I could probably manage with a base 991 C2. As much as I like this design, I don't see the point of large sedans. This thing's probably no more fun to drive than a Macan Turbo, but way less practical. And a 911 is way more fun to drive, only giving up the back seats. It's kind of the worst of both worlds. Looks good though
