2o6's "I've made it" car thread

I feel like we don't talk about purchases enough here. Most of us are reaching a boring stage of life where we all drive boring mobiles and anticipate the grave.

I make decent money now. What if I replaced the Sonic next year with a new car?

Criteria:

Four doors.

Manual transmission preferred, but not necessary

OK so I'm all over the map:

My picks so far:

Volvo XC40

Honda Civic Si (Sedan)

(Used) Lexus NXh

(Used) Cadillac ATS 2.0T 6MT

2020 BMW 330i, 1969 El Camino, 2017 Bolt EV

Of those, oddly, I would say ATS, followed by the CSi.

I'm assuming your budget is at or about 25K so I'm going to throw in a dark horse candidate.  V8 M3.

Around me you can find examples for about 30K, so a bit more expensive but still a lot of car.

Of the choices listen, Civic Si cause I'm a fanboy, obviously.

Civic Si. Low running costs and good residuals. Passes the Excel spreadsheet smell test.

Pretty much same for me. My order of preference:

1. ATS (used)
2. Civic Si
3. Volvo CX40
4. Lexus Nxh

Probably one of the worst ways for him to spend $25K

QuoteWhat We Don't Like: With its rakish low roofline, this car might as well have only two doors; dogs and children are the only ones comfortable in back. But space is the least of the CLA's shortcomings. Almost everything beneath the handsome exterior—from the groaning engine to the flimsy prop bar under the hood—betrays the CLA's low budget. The sport suspension and Pirelli all-season run-flat tires do the CLA no favors on pockmarked roads, where it crashes over bumps while vibrations fill the cabin. On smooth pavement, our thoughts turn to the pervasive road and wind noise. The transmission's rougher shifts—in particular an audible clunk going into first gear at every stop—had us pining for Mercedes-Benz's conventional automatics, whose gearchanges seem greased with butter. We squirmed in those high-back seats trying to find a relaxing neck position, only to be prodded by the top portion's aggressive forward tilt. While the controls retain the usual Mercedes tactile quality, they're set within thinly padded armrests and surrounded by hard plastics. Even with a lighter option load than was on our example, the CLA still plays too close to newer, more luxurious, and better-built Benzes.

It's bad man. If you want an ugly compact just get a Civic EX 1.5T.

If anyone can handle it, I'm pretty sure its the poster that picks up questionable used cars and fixes them for resale.

mzziaz

ATS or the Volvo of those.  How about the Buick Regal?

In b4 financial "advice" ruins this thread.

I like the Volvo best of your options. I'd throw in a 228i manual coupe in Jalopnik space.

Man you are obsessed with the rod bearing thing. NONE of the cars of ANY of our club members have had this issue. Any car before 80K miles will be fine, and many are known to have gone up to 150K miles.

I would assume an M3 in 2o6's price range would have fairly high mileage.

I'm still a fan of that option. LS swap it if it blows up.

When I got a real job I coveted the new Mazda3 hatches for a few months. I picked out my favorite configuration and had a nice X-plan price handy.

Then I got the Miata and $aved myself $17,000.

Then this happened

Uh oh. A Miata is on my short-list of new job cars.

Well that settles it then, like 50 out of thousands of cars haven't had problems so nothing to worry about.

No, E9x M3 and E60 M5 are no good for someone on a first job salary. Even without the rod bearing thing but especially with it.

Sorry. Your internet browsing of forums with zero real world experience (as usual) is more statistically significant. My bad.

I agree. Just sick of the constant baseless "it's gonna blow" sporty fearmongering. Like I said above, I think the Volvo rocks for Kevin.
