2021 VW ID.3 First Drive Finds It Has A Lot Going For It, But Also Has Its Faults

The VW ID.3 has been a long time coming. After a few issues, it has finally gone on sale across Europe and Autogefühl recently had the opportunity to test it out.

A host of different variations will be offered depending on the market. In Germany, the ID.3 range includes the Pro Performance, Life, Style, Business, Family, Max, and Tech.

Customers can choose between two different battery packs. The entry-level battery has 58 kWh of capacity and is good for roughly 261 miles (420 km) of range on a single charge. Those who need more range can opt for the 77 kWh battery pack that is rated at an impressive 341 miles (550 km) of range.

We're quite fond of the ID.3's exterior design, as it is quirky and fun, and an excellent place to start for the design philosophy of VW's electric vehicles. Inside, however, things don't appear quite as nice, something which this reviewer can attest to.

The interior of the ID.3 is quite minimalist, but it is also very basic and appears quite cheap. While there is some soft material on the upper part of the dashboard, most other parts are finished in hard black plastic.

Sitting at the center of the dashboard is a 10-inch infotainment system. This system doesn't operate alongside any traditional buttons or knobs and instead has sliders to control the volume and fan speed settings. While it is an intriguing piece of tech, it doesn't seem all that practical.

What else will the reviewer have to say about the ID.3? Be sure to check out the clip below, but be warned: at 44-minutes, it's a long one.

Am I the only one who really digs how it looks?

Looks fine to me. Not fond of the dimpling on the front, but that's a small gripe.

I wonder if that's just a design cue, or it has real aerodynamic merit, like a golf ball?
