Mercedes-AMG Exhaust Notes To Be Crippled By New Noise Regulations
Mercedes–AMG has admitted that its future performance cars won't be as loud as those in the past due to nw sound regulations imposed by the European Union.
Speaking with Motoring during the recent launch of the new Mercedes-AMG A 45S and CLA 45 S, the head of product planning for AMG compact cars, Bastian Bogenschutz, said vehicles sold outside Europe will also come with the same restrictions.

"It's coming from the European regulations. We can [design specific exhausts] but it's too expensive for every market to do it, it's pretty difficult," Bogenschutz explained.
New sound regulations in Europe are measured against the loudest setting in the car's driver mode menu. This means that automakers cannot even design exhaust systems that are quiet most of the time but can be made much louder, such as through the opening of butterfly valves in certain driving modes.
In a bid to ensure owners can enjoy an intoxicating exhaust note, Bogenschutz said that AMG has employed a sound enhancement system inside the cabin.
"The regulations were getting pretty difficult for the sound to just come from the exhaust system. So we added the AMG pure performance sound, there we take the real sound from the exhaust system, the pulsation of the real sound and move it inside the car. It works together with the exhaust system."
What this means is that owners of mew Mercedes-AMG models will need to turn to the aftermarket if they want an exhaust system which pops, cracks, and bangs. Unless they, too, are banned at some point in the future...

This is Annalena Baerbock, a prominent member of the German Green Party, and this happened recently. She wanted to get all technical about EV batteries and instead of saying cobalt, she said Kobold - which in German refers to a mythical gremlin type of creature. :facepalm:
This woman also claimed that storing energy is possible in our grid system, and that climate change is responsible for Merkel's health problems. If this garbage political party and its idiot leaders ever take control of Germany... goodbye. :pullover:

Considering MB no longer makes that badass 6.2L V8, I can safely say that this law is really no loss to anyone.
Some of the Mercedes AMG cars are over 100dB from 5m away. Sorry but that is insane, especially since you have douchbags using the "Sport" mode in a residential area at midnight. Cars should not be louder then aircraft heard from 50m away. That they are being certified in normal mode, and then legally allowed to switch to sport mode is a loop hole that needs to be shut. For me the tonality is more important then simply loud.
The Ferrari F355 (with stock exhaust) is for me one of the best sounding cars ever made, there is no need for a modern AMG to be several magnitudes louder.
Lots of newer Mustangs and Camaros are over 100 db from 50-100 feet away at our local SCCA region's autocrosses. We have to stay under that to avoid neighbor's complaining about the noise. And honestly, those cars can hurt your ears if you're picking up cones on course. It's just obnoxious. I think my car is 92 db at full throttle, and it's a loud car. No real reason to be louder than that - the 0.5 HP gain isn't gonna help your time.
So I have no sympathy for these AMGs.
I've noticed that the Porsche SUVs warm up their engines with the exhausts wide open. My neighbor got a Macan and it wakes me up every morning with its juiced-up rumble. It's not sporty anymore! It's a fucking affectation! Why can't cars be quieter?
Yeah, I wouldn't want to go any louder than the S2000, which is pretty quiet compared to a lot of other cars.

The turbo 4.0 V8 sounds really, really good.
100+ dB at 5m is ear-splitting. I remember my dad fitted an exhaust to his dirt bike that was 102 dB and it was so loud that if he was riding in front of me, I couldn't hear my own bike's engine at all to know when to shift.
A lot of municipalities have local ordinances that cap sound at 95 dB, including Watkins Glen. 95 is plenty loud. If you can't hear your own car at that level, then remove some of the sound insulation (and save some weight).

Since you don't live here, you are unaware of how insane these people come across. Imagine if you had such a political party in the United States, which literally wanted to take away your car and your right to drive. Imagine having such a wacko political party in charge that wants car-free cities and wants you to ride a bicycle across the city and do all of your shopping, chores etc. with a bicycle. Imagine having such a political party in power who want to ban all domestic airplane flights and force you to take a slow, unreliable, expensive and tardy train from city to city. Those are just some of the things that these idiotic Greenies here are pushing for.
And yes, you heard me; the German rail system is a joke and in need for sanitation and modernization. It is slow, unreliable (tardy) and incredibly expensive (flying and driving are cheaper). Worst of all, the trains are all so slow and the A/C system often does not work in the summer. Those experiences put me off riding the train in Germany for years. In Japan you have a Shinkansen train which will travel at speeds over 350 km/h between two cities which are 50 km apart. In Germany you have ICE (Inter-City-Express) trains which barely go over 120 km/h because our rail system uses "slow tracks". I've ridden in the ICE trains a few times when I went to northern Germany and didn't want to take my car. I don't see what the hype is all about. They're slow.

The sad truth is you get this type of behavior with many sports car owners in Germany. And strangely they all seem to come from the crowd that likes to stop on the Autobahn and take wedding group photos... :devil:
I agree it's idiotic to switch to sport/exhaust mode and wake up an entire neighborhood. Then again there are also motorcycles which are loud. My parents' neighbor is a teacher and has a Harley Davidson. During the week in the mornings he will ride that thing to his work place - and it's loud as f*ck. Wakes up the entire street.

1. I'm sure that tax saved a lot of gas and by extension emissions. So their plan worked.
2. Driving is a privilege, not a right. Definitely not a right that allows 100dB exhausts on public roads. Again if you had a neighbor with a 100dB exhaust you would be the loudest complainer about it.
3. You don't know the cost or differences in logistics for those Japanese trains vs yours. Plus I'm sure if you had your high speed trains you'd find another reason to complain about them.
