Title: 11 Months...
Post by: Raza on August 28, 2007, 04:17:06 PM
Okay, so I'm running low on time here.  Less than 11 months left; I could move as early as 8-9 months from now.

I want to know what you guys think I should look at in the new car segment.  Please consider prices when you make a decision.

Remember, I was looking at 30mpg under old EPA, practical, and it has to handle 25-30k miles per year.  Reliability is not that big a concern, though, so don't read too much into that.

All cars fit the bill except for the MS3, which is under the gas mileage requirement, but not so much that it would make such a huge deal; it's 28, as I recall.

Please, please post your logic when you vote!  I need help.

GTI, can't say that it's better or worse than the others, I just find it more appealing.

Or Si coupe. Either way, you know you want it. K20 FTW.

Of those, I guess the Rabbit. Why not a Mazda 3s sedan or hatch?

I like the Rabbit, but if I was going to consider the GTI... well, I wouldn't because I think would rather have the Civic Si.

What do you prefer, a big flat powerband where you can just floor it and go from any gear or would you rather downshift it an feel the power build as wind it out to 8,000rpms? Do you want a VW just because it's a VW, or are you willing to put brand biases aside? NObody can answer that except for you.

The GTI has more cargo space, it can keep up with the Si in a straight line, and fuel economy is about the same, ok... but, the Si handles better, is lighter, costs less, and with it's high strung powertrain, the Si would be more involving... and I know that is your absolute favourite word to use when judging a car, so if you pick the GTI over the Si, you will never live it down.

You've driven the Si. Now go drive the GTI. Then drive the Si again. Then go drive the MS3 and see if you really care that much about fuel economy. Then drive a Suzuki Reno. Then drive the Si again and buy it.

ONLY 11 months?  Jesus, dude....

Is the Mazda a hatch or sedan?  If hatch, that or the GTI, I'd hafta drive them both...  Those are by far the most appealing to me.  Two of my friends have 3s, and I love them both.

Si Sedan...
Since it's your practical car i said sedan, but I'd probably take the coupe if i were buying...
Either way it's cheaper than the GTI and MS3, the MS3 has too much power for an FWD car, and the Rabbit with a few suspension upgrades would be a good second choice, but if you're considering a 2 door Civic i'd consider a 3 door Rabbit.

Never have I heard someone complain about too much power!  Crazy.  Well I suppose Raza complains about it too.

The cool part about having a throttle that can be at any position means that you don't need to use all the power in first and second gear, but by third when you get traction you have more than the other two.  And you win.

I'd pick MS3, then GTI then SI.  But the GTI is pretty close to the MS3, I suppose I'd need a good amount of test drives to decide.

Civic Si Coupe.  Two words: Honda engine.  Best engines in the world.  It's a fun car, comfrotable car, great mileage, killer engine, and I'm starting to warm to the design.  I still don't think that they are lookers, but I certainly don't think they're ugly anymore.  That would be my pick of the ones you listed.

I wouldn't choose the standard Mazda3 over the Rabbit, so it's pointless to include it.  I wasn't even considering the Speed3 until I read a few reviews talking about how easy it is to handle the power, and how special it feels when you're driving it.

Involving is incredibly important, but when it comes to slight degrees, other things do tend to become important as well.  Considering this is car that has to drive high miles and be responsible for a lot of cargo hauling, then a small, involving car doesn't make as much sense.

As it stands, though, the GTI might be the car I want most, but it's the I'm least likely to buy.  It's just too expensive, and the return over the Rabbit may not be enough to justify it.  The Speed3 is also pushing the "too expensive" category, and it doesn't have a sunroof, but I just assumed that I'd want the Grand Touring model.  It's possible that the standard Speed3 has everything I need, so that would lop a couple thousand off the price, bringing it back in contention with the Si.

In order of the strongest considerations to the weakest, here they are, as it stands right now:

Rabbit
Si sedan
Si coupe
Speed3
GTI

Give it a test drive, at least.

At 140bhp, a possible weight exceeding the Rabbit's and a similar price (the only Astra that appeals to me is the XR 3 door), the chance of me being swayed by its character is low.  I will give it a shot though.  Also, I'm one of the few people turned off by a no haggle policy.

If, as Sander hopes, a Redline version comes out within my timeframe (or near it; I'd prefer to have the car locked down by the end of my lease, but if it's something special, I see no problem using the Boxster as my only car for a short time), it would be a possibility.  Certainly, if it mirrors the Astra VXR, it would probably be my top choice (if it's priced similarly to or less than the MS3), barring the miracle of Renault selling the Megane R26 here by August 08.  And that would be a miracle indeed.

I've actually driven neither; the standard 3 doesn't appeal to me as much as the Rabbit does.  I'm sure it's a fine car, I just don't want it.  I'll likely drive the Rabbit this weekend, and perhaps the GTI again; I don't know if I can squeeze in a 3.  If I'm able to find a Speed3 in the area, then I should be able to though.

I'd look at the Si Sedan and the MS3. I love the idea of the sedan simply because it now gets the power that Si's have had but now allowed to have two more doors. That and honda engineering ( perceived reliability ). I'm also a big fan of the regular Mazda 3 sports. Yet to drive the MS3, but I already know I loved the handling on the watered down version. The extra punch would make it all the more entertaining. Doesn't hurt that its a looker too.

I took a look at the 2008s, and other than the power bump, there are no obvious changes, other than a roughly $400 increase in price (that's why I have an approximate price up there; I priced an 07 and added $400).

But the thing is that it's creeping ever so closely to the CSi's price.  Now, neither are turbocharged (which I'd rather have over NA), but the CSi is a revver, which I like.  The biggest things holding me back from the CSi are the looks, the interior, and the practicality.  I've done with a sedan for the past 5 years, but never quite so small.  As it stands, the Passat is the most practical car I (or anyone in my family) have access to on a regular basis, so the idea of replacing it with a physically smaller, yet more practical car is appealing.  I'll have to drive the CSi and Rabbit back to back to see if it's worth it.  Also, if they want me to pay a premium on the CSi, I'll promptly tell them to go fuck themselves.

Are you set on a new car?  I just can't imagine the best idea right after college is to buy a [brand] new car.  I think I'd get something off lease CPO or the like, then go new when you have a little better base of income.

The lack of a gun to blow away people would suck so I'd need a F-4E too. Or just give me a A-10 for that.

Oh, that's definitely out of his (and his dad's) price range.  $50 mil, okay.  But $361 mil and change is just too far out there.

They have excellent resale value so I can't imagine it being more then about $11,000 a month.  You better buy Lease Insurance through the dealership though in case their is excessive wear and tear.

When you do, make sure you include my 2000 Pontiac Sunfire GT on your list.  35 mpg is what I've been averaging.

I'd be less concerned about SAM's than about AMRAAM's. Although I'd prefer to not enter either of them but you just can't have everything. But my personal choice here would easily be the F-35. That way there really IS the possibility of driving it to work. You could just park it on the top floor of any parking garage. The other cars could park under your wings.

Also, if they want me to pay a premium on the CSi, I'll promptly tell them to go fuck themselves.
ah. can't go wrong wither way. i'm a bit biased against honda though because of the arrogant dealers that i've been to.

My understanding is that the Marine  F-35B version  will have short take off and vertical landing and replace the AV-8B.
Here is a little info on wikipedia.   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-35_Lightning_II

I remember seeing a show about the competition between the X-32 and the F-35 and they both had it tested just for that.

Okay the F-35 is a STOVL plane.

"STOVL is an acronym for Short Take Off and Vertical Landing.

This is the ability of some aircraft to take off from a short runway or take off vertically if it does not have a very heavy payload and land vertically (i.e. with no runway). The formal NATO definition (since 1991) is:

A Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing aircraft (a?ronef ? d?collage court et atterrissage vertical) is a fixed-wing aircraft capable of clearing a 15 m (50 ft) obstacle within 450 m (1500 ft) of commencing take-off run, and capable of landing vertically. "

F-35 is the only one that can take off vertically though. Actually I'm not sure about the Su-37..although I don't recall it can. Either way the JSF (F-35) is the most economically important because it now means countries who couldn't necessarily afford a jet of this caliber now can. F-35's all around!  I think that's why we spent so damn much on the F-22, we being the U.S. can't just be on par with other nations we have to be better.  Either way I really like the F-35 just because of how cool it is! The whole engine shifting is crazy to me. It had to be a huge challenge to engineer that.

Well the jury is still out on how well the F-35 will perform.  Usually highly complex and overweight fighters deliver disappointing real-world performance.  I personally think the Boeing X-32, which had a much less sophisticated vertical flight system, would have been the better choice, at least for the Marines STOVL model.

Yaw would get the Civic Si sedan. But for Raza I'd say the GTI is the better choice. You will get bored with the Rabbit, the Si coupe is ugly and the MS3, while a good choice, just can't match the upscale feel or technological novelty of the GTI. The GTI wasn't Automobile mag's car of the year in '07 for nothing.

I'm really lost right now.  I just don't know what I want.  I was thinking about insurance on a CSi, and that's going to be ridiculous.  The Rabbit is the only one that makes sense to buy, and it will be a car that will be good for mods.  I can't really afford the GTI or the MS3, unless I go used.  And used is a huge clusterfuck of options.

I guess it depends on your POV.  Nearly a year seems like a pretty long time to me, especially considering I seem to change cars every 18 months very unexpectedly.

I won't be doing that.  Plus this car comes at a fairly bad time, just coming off graduation.  I'll be keeping it for at least 5 years, most likely.

A friend of mine back in Jersey is looking for a new car and came up with this:

Cars.com search result: E28 BMW M5 (http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail.jsp;jsessionid=XES4XAAFG5KRLLAYIEZE2UY?tab=summary&paId=235821466&recnum=0&actLog=true&tracktype=usedcc&pageNumber=0&numResultsPerPage=50&largeNumResultsPerPage=0&sortorder=descending&sortfield=PRICE+descending&certifiedOnly=false&criteria=K-manual%7CE-ALL%7CM-_5_%7CB-15000%7CH-%7CD-_48_%7CN-N%7CR-10000%7CI-1%7CP-PRICE+descending%7CQ-descending%7CX-popular%7CZ-07030&aff=national)

Snap it up before he does.

15 grand for an E28 is not a good price.  I'd rather have an E34, and I can get one for not much more.  But, I don't know how reliable it would be.

No, I did not know that.

But why pay for rarity when I won't enjoy it?

Hell, for 3-5 grand more, I could get an E38 M5.  And it gets better gas mileage.

It's odd how the M5 prices have evened out over time.  If only they got more than 19-21mpg...

If I could keep it pristine, I'd enjoy it as well.  But 30 thousand miles a year on a car like that would run it into the ground, and I don't want to be responsible for that.  A 1991 or 2001 M5 would be a better fit.

Test drive a Honda Fit. I bet you'd like something like that. Lower purchase price, use even less gas for your long commute, has super handling, and for goodness sakes you already have a Boxter you can drive whenever you feel like having some real fun.
I wonder if there are still waiting lists for them.

This is going to sound strange coming from me, but they're just a little too slow to be merging in and out of highways everyday.  I just don't think they're all that effective as highway cars.  They get EPA 38, but I don't want to be flogging it all the time.  Plus, for the same price, I could get a used EP Civic Si, which looks better and is faster.

The Fit is a good choice; perhaps great, but I just don't want it.

Also, I don't seem to find out if there is a sunroof available or not.

That's not really a good excuse. If you just want more power, that's fine, but you don't need it. If a 30,000lb truck can merge on to the highway with 400hp, then a 2400lb Honda Fit can do it with 109 hp. Anyways, flogging a Fit can't be anything but fun, and I cant imagine it requiring a whole lot of effort. Plus the Fit has VTAK!  I'm sure it doens't mind being revved, in fact I'm sure it enjoys it.

On the other hand, floggin the Esteem with 95hp sucks and is tiring because the engine does not make any top-end power and the synchros in the gearbox suck ass.
Passing on 2-lane rural highways uphill is just about the worst, but merging on the interstate is not exactly a chore, it cruises at 90mph just fine. Passing moves on the interstate only require a downshift to 4th, and a little bit of patience.

I say, if you want to be lazy, you might as well stick with an automatic. :P

I don't want to go out on a limb buying a car that I might grow to like and have to be stuck with it for 5 years and not like it.  The Rabbit is only a few grand more, still within my price range, and it has things like a sunroof, which is pretty essential for my enjoyment of a daily car.  Hell, if I could, I'd find a four place convertible that fits my needs just so that I could conceivably have the top down every day of the week.  I would drive the Fit, if it had that little glass panel; but unlike the MS3, it's not special enough for me to give it an allowance for that.

It is not impossible to get an aftermarket sunroof installed.
Nevertheless, I think the Rabbit is a good choice, especially for the price.

While that's true, I have a feeling that the Fit will always feel like a bronze medal compared to the Rabbit or the Civic Si.

Does anyone know about this sound system on the Civic Si sedan that's not available on the coupe?  Is it worth it?

If you want to be cheap, the Fit is cheaper, even if you decide to get a sunroof installed (perhaps $1000), gets most excellent MPG, supposedly has great handling, and I think interior looks quite nice. I wouldn't not test drive one if I were you. Also, don't forget that the Fit got 1st place in C&D's comparison test, while the Suzuki Reno got 7th (even losing to the Caliper, OMG!). http://www.caranddriver.com/comparisons/10983/2007-honda-fit-sport.html :praise:

The Fit's main advantage is in seating flexibility - bits that fold here, there and everywhere. I'd wager that a 5-door Rabbit has sufficient cargo capacity to overcome its relatively basic seating configurations; the seats doing backflips I'm assuming Raza doesn't necessarily need. That, and the Rabbit's interior is more nicely designed and trimmed.

Even 24k is beginning to look like too much to feasibly handle for me.  Plus, there are so many options, I wouldn't be able to control myself.  Leather, cruise control, alarm, trip computer, cold weather package, dynamic chassis, bottle holder (come on!), six disc changer, premium sound, and it's 29K.  All that stuff is easily available on cars like the MS3 and GTI for less.

Too ugly.  And considering my past experiences with Nissan, it's not going to be any good.

Plus, the Spec V with a sunroof and slippy diff is $22,995.  The same price as the Civic Si almost.  Easy choice.

Also, this is what C&D said about it:  "The fun here is all add-on, and it hasn?t been added thickly enough."

928s are too expensive.  Cheapest one I've ever seen for sale was 45 grand.

Nope.  Sure, I'm a snob, but when it comes to the 350Z, I really wanted to love it.  They look great, and on paper they have wonderful specs.  But driving a coupe is a lot like driving a Maxima, except the clutch is worse.

When you really, really, push it; when you drive at the limit (preferably in a convertible version), it wakes up and feels fantastic.  But it never feels special otherwise.

Why would I buy the A3?  The 2.0T is just a GTI.  I'd rather have the GTI.  Can't afford a new 9-3, they don't sell the 9-2X (doesn't get good enough gas mileage anyway), wouldn't touch the new Subaru Dented Corolla Lookalike, can't afford it, doesn't get good enough gas mileage as a WRX, standard model's nothing special compared to anything else, don't like it as much as the Rabbit, isn't as practical, and the SX4, you must be joking?  Similar price to the Rabbit, nearly 30bhp less, and there are no advantages to buying over a Rabbit.

Explain the advantages of the Vibe over a Rabbit.  I have no idea how it will stand up, if it's identical to a Matrix than it probably doesn't drive so well, and it's more expensive than the Rabbit similarly optioned.

I'm not going to be miserable to save $10 a month.  A Mini would get the same or better MPG but would actually be fun.

Besides the only Vibe on Pontiac's website is more expensive than the Rabbit and makes 126bhp.

Here's what C&D had to say about the Vibe:
"Even with the standard 130-hp engine, the path gets snaky under full power. There are no smiles in this car as it's equipped (it could have had the same 180-hp engine as the Matrix, and more tenacious tires)."

"In concept, this is a Corolla with a high roof."  (Doesn't bode well)

They don't even talk about handling or driver enjoyment.

Is Toyota trying to see how ugly and bland they can make cars until they stop selling as many?  I bet the bosses in Japan just laugh and say "Stupid Americans" to each other as frequently as they say Konichiwa.  Maybe they utter them in the same sentence as they see each other for morning coffee breaks...

Maybe they drink so much sake that they just don't care, or the have sake keg stands in the office before going off to design new cars.  But damn, all the new Toyotas, sans the FJ, are downright fugly.

Maybe Toyota's afraid that some passion would help slow down sales.  That's why we get these fugboxes instead of the Aurion and other cooler cars.  Hell, they even had a shot to make the Matrix cool-looking, but they failed at that, too.
