Would you prefer the current GTI which is one of the best for a while, or the original GTI which started the whole hot hatch concept?
Definitely the original. I really like the new GTI, but I think it's ugly and I'd probably prefer a speed3.
the original. the new ong is pretty good but there are other cars in that price range i'd take before it.
How 'bought an old cabrio?
When Evo did a test of the best handling front drive cars, they arranged a meeting between the 15 best. Both the MkI and MkV GTIs were there. The MkV made the top 5. The MkI did not.
That said, I'd have to sample the original.
I loved my old one, even if it was called a Rabbit.

And I would never let my tires look like that now. :(

That.is.awesome.
If I was going to have a Golf, I'd have this one:

The Citi, built in SA. Basically a MK1 with modern details. They still make it. I plan to get one imported someday (wishful thinking!).

Such a clean install. That thing HAS to be a blast to drive.
I have to go with the Mk I. I get to work on one with my schoool's racing club:

Every time I see a picture of the MkI, I am shocked at how good looking it still is.

Wow! I love that. If they sold that here in a 3 door with a 1.8T, I'd take it! How many horsepower is 74kW?
MK1
74kw = 100hp.

That's amazing!
Mark 2! But of the choices, I'll take the new one for my daily driver.
Original, like many before me said, there are a lot of other cars I would take in the price range before the new golf.
Mark V, just.
Nick, that silver Citi you posted; goodness me, that's brilliant.
