Title: Jeep Gladiator & Towing
Post by: AutobahnSHO on December 02, 2018, 02:36:17 PM
https://www.yahoo.com/news/why-diesel-jeep-gladiator-pickup-130000498.html

The turbodiesel version has an intercooler which reduces engine cooling, so it's expected 500lbs less towing capacity than the gasoline version.

But it will probably be less stressed while towing that same weight vs the 3.6

It's a 2.0 liter diesel.  It's frikkin' tiny.  It produces amazing numbers out of those tiny lttle cylnders, but that doesn't come without some drawbacks, and its no surprise that a gas engine with nearly twice the displacement will do a better job.

It looks sort of good in Rubicon trim and terrible in pretty much all other trims

I'm sure they'll be very popular in CO, but personally, I couldn't justify getting one over a Tacoma unless I was gonna be doing serious off-roading and really needed the front locker on the Rubicon. Especially since I can get the Tacoma with a 6ft bed for sleeping in.

Rear lockers are really useful. Front lockers are overkill for anything that's not a gonzo trail rig. On stock vehicles, they're there for mall crawling bragging points.

I really want to lock the diff of a FWD car just to see how it really drives. Horrible, I imagine. But it would be so cool.

Which is why I'd get a 4 door Tacoma TRD Offroad with a 6-foot bed. TRD Offroad trim has a rear locker and 6 foot bed available. TRD Pro trim is 5 foot bed only.

It's one of the many, many possibilities for my next vehicle. Probably not a very likely one, but you never know.

GMC has a rear lockered. I'll sell it to you for half of what a Toyota TuRD costs.

I've been told its possible to install a detroit locker meant for a chevy onto an eldorado/toronado drivetrain, but that guy had the whole thing in the back end of a pickup anyways.

My wife's cousin might get one. He wants a Camaro convertible but his wife would prefer he gets a truck (she's from a small western town...). So a Jeep truck would fulfill the convertible goal while also being a truck.

I told him to get a Taco

Nah. I want to perma-lock the diff of something stupid, like a Cavalier.

Welding rod is always the right size.

I'm sure it will sell well. I like all the little non-serious whimsical touches.

Similar to the wrangler, the aftermarket accessory market will be huge for these things.

Jeep has a couple good examples

That is nice. I don't really need a 4x4, but if I did....

That thing looks so sweet, but realistically, I'd never get one over a normal 4-door Unlimited.

You could always buy a 4x4 with a front locker and remove the driveshaft to the rear axle.

Or just drive a 4x4 truck with a rear locker in reverse
