 That fuckin sound track....

As awesome as the 458 Speciale might end up being, it's hard to take that over the sound of a V12.

They used the word compromise a bit to much for what is Ferrari's flagship until the La Ferrari hits the stores.

I mean it is like a 3800lb 2 seat car

But it's got a 700 HP V12 and can be driven over long distances so it's all good.

Shelby GT500 was just 0.6 seconds slower and the Viper and Corvette annihilate it.  It's not that impressive to be honest.

0-60 is irrelevant. This thing is traction limited. It traps a good 4-5 MPH higher than either while not having that much more power. From a roll I am sure this would put all 3 of those cars in their respective places.

Who gives a shit though. Did you watch the video on mute???

I wasn't talking about 0-60.  I was talking about the lap time it set around Laguna Seca.  It barely outlapped the GT500 by just 0.6 seconds.  A Mustang.  The Corvette and Viper absolutely annihilate it around the track by 5 seconds a lap.

As for the noise, it was nice, but the Ferrari V8 sounds better.

I quite liked the piece on the early 90s 240SX that was linked at the end of the video.  Brought back fond memories.

The Ferrari bit was good too.

Were all cars being piloted by the same driver?  Were they all wearing comparable tires?

In the hands of Ferrari's test drivers, this thing laps whole seconds faster around Ferrari's Fiorano test circuit than the 599 GTO, the Enzo, the 458, and the 430 Scuderia.

Same driver and same track.  Comparable tires is a bullshit excuse when they run the cars with the tires they come with from the factory.

I didn't know whose times you were quoting.

Bear in mind the F12 is a touring car (a mind-numbingly powerful one), not a full blown sports/race car like the Viper or even Corvette.  The suspension is softer, the handling not as crisp, and it's more comfortable.  Leagues more comfortable than the Viper, I'll wager.  Likely much more comfortable than a Z06 or ZR1 Vette as well.

I mean, this thing has like 50 more HP and weighs like 700lbs more. Not sure what you were expecting.

Plus different tracks favor different cars. Laguna Seca is like a damn go kart track for these cars, so nimbleness wins over everything else. I'll bet on the almighty Ring it would be a lot closer or even reversed results wise.

But again, watch the vid w/sound

Still.  This car fails to impress when a car that costs a fraction of the price with less than optimal suspension setup and a 9 year old chassis can come within a whisker of it around a race track.

You'd have a point is a fast lap time around a go kart track was the explicit primary objective of this car

It's a Ferrari, it's not expensive because you're necessarily getting "more" than other cars.  It's expensive because it's exclusive and it's a Ferrari.  They aren't marketed or bought because they are a "good value" in any sense of the word.  The GT500 is probably faster around Laguna than an Aston Vanquish.  Any number of cheaper, older cars will smoke a Continental GT around a racetrack at a fraction of the price.  What's your point?  It's a touring car, it's not built for lap times.

And I'd wager Ford spent a fair bit of time tuning the GT500 at Laguna, as they did with the Boss 302.

I'd also have a better chance of getting a Kate Upton lookalike in the Ferrari too. And ride in comfort when I'm going at ballistic speeds.

A 730 hp Ferrari should be a lot faster than a Mustang and should be pretty close to the ZR1.  Don't get me wrong, I really dig this Ferrari, but it really falls short, performance wise.

Seems to be an anomaly.  Every track time I've seen for that F12 has it slightly faster than a 458.  It beats the new 458 Speciale (which is under 3,000 lbs, 600 hp) around Fiorano by a half a second.

I blame a combination of the track not being a good fit for the car, and Pobst not being the driver every one seems to think he is.

Really?

Currently active in the SCCA World Challenge GT series and the Grand American series' GT class, Pobst was the 2003, 2007, 2008, and 2010 SCCA World Challenge GT champion, the 1996 North American Touring Car Championship title winner, and the 2005, 2006 and 2007 SCCA World Challenge TC vice-champion. He is also a two-time class winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona, in 2001 and 2006.

The summary at the end of that video expresses the same disappointment I felt when I see how "much lesser" cars are better cars than the Ferrari.  The Ferrari has nearly 300 more horsepower than the Vette and can barely outlap it.  I love the Ferrari.  I think it looks great and it sounds amazing, but it's 4000 lbs and has soft pitchy handling.  Ferrari came up short.

That doesn't mean the guy is incapable of producing a subpar lap.  We have no clue if he only got a chance to put down a few laps and Ferrari snagged it back.  Everyone's got cars they're naturally more competitive in too.

Comparing an F12 to a Corvette based on lap time of one driver on one course is pretty stupid.

Guys, it's faster around Fiorano than the 458 Speciale.  Fiorano isn't an especially long track that favors power either.  To say the F12 comes up short is asinine.

Yeah, the TT's platform has sort of split off into its own evolutionary branch from the rest of the Golf family.

What's your beef with the TT, Golf-driver? Have you even driven one?
I know you are a fan of them and I am still angry you suggested one

Never drove one though. Have driven some nice GTIs though.

Why would you be angry about him suggesting a TT?

He should know me better than that.

Yeah, it's the kind of car that gets ragged on by magazines and eaten up by people who haven't driven one.  And yet, they're still fun cars despite not being great at irrelevant things like track times.  By all accounts, the new model is supposed to be even better than a GTI, thanks to its lighter weight through the use of aluminum.

You have a Golf and a 350Z.  I have no idea what you're into anymore.  I expected an Accord and another Accord, but with the back seats removed.

Meh, Golf was the wife's car. I put it like this. If money were no object, I'd have a Desmosedici RR, an Ariel Atom V8, and a E63 wagon. Lightness, picking the car for the job, yadda yadda... same shit I've been saying for years. I am a speed freak now though. I don't think I can daily drive something slower than the Z for a long time, it's not even fast to me anymore.

You're only a speed freak because the Z doesn't feel fast.

The Z feels faster than a lot of cars folks suggested I buy. It's still a low 14 second car.

It is faster than a lot of cars suggested...but in my experience it definitely doesn't feel it.  All that weight dulls the senses.

Speed is overrated. Having your ass almost bumping the asphalt with as light a car as you can get is where it's at.
