Title: toot toot Sonic warrior
Post by: 2o6 on March 29, 2016, 11:25:34 AM
I picked up the sonic.

Only 46k, LTZ turbo manual hatch.

I am having an issue checked out with a 2nd gear that grinds when downshifting.

However the general manager sold it to me, and he was able to replicate the issue - also I caught it and returned it in the hour and a half so far that I've owned it. A

It has 15 months of powertrain left, so I'm confident it'll be fine.

Shift linkage adjustment, top off the trans fluid, or a slight clutch adjustment could all be the culprit and easy to fix.

Yeah it only does it coming down, and only on 2nd.

Worst to worst, a new Trans. And since I've only owned the car three hours, I shouldn't be liable for a dime. Or at worst, they're undoing the deal.

Needs new Trans.

Transmission is ordered.

Also might need a fuel pump since I'm having some starting issues

Both are under warranty, but either way who cares I've owned a car literally four hours.

Not concerned.

Are the transmissions known to be fragile? If a manual transmission has to be replaced at 46k, I wonder how hard it was beat on by the PO and what else might be wrong with it...

Hopefully it'll be good to go for a long time after the new transmission.

Do a new clutch and bearing at the same time. This car was abused, but you caught it, luckily.

It's kind of an issue on the 2012 cars I'm told.

It wasn't a hard grind, and not always present, and only grinds occasionally when shifting down.

My Yaris sedan had a shit 3rd and 2nd synchro, and the hatch had issues too.

Is the 2nd gear synchro the problem here as well?

I'd think replacing the syncro would be cheaper, but maybe not with labor costs.

Congrats! That's a ton of car for the money. Like a more practical fiesta st at a bargain price on the used market. Needing a new transmission and fuel pump at 46k miles is a little worrisome, but at least it's getting taken care of

Any chance you can swap out the head unit for one of the new Chevy touch screens with CarPlay and android auto? Future bro-in-law had a new Silverado as a rental. Chevy's infotainment is one of the best out there I think.

I just checked the Sonic forum, there's a 70 page thread dedicated to the 2nd gear grind. Most guys had it taken care of in 2012-2013 and they were generally first model year cars. My car has lower miles than average.

I'm not super upset - the general manager is the guy who sold me the car and got me financing so it's on him and in taking care of me.

Definitely up there with u-connect as far as how easy it is to use.  Hell my dad even figured out how to connect his iPhone via bluetooth to a new Silverado.  He didn't know what to do with it, but he connected it!   That's way more than most cars where he can't figure out how to change radio stations.

Nope, not even possible. GM is rude and changes the CANBUS and other shit so that they're not interchagable without getting a wiring harness from a 2013+ car, and even still it's a hell of a lot of work for something you can install and get easier from the aftermarket. I'm pretty sure you won't even be able to do the Apple CarPlay stuff from 2016+ in the 2015 car even though I'm pretty sure they're virtually the same head unit.

Also, this is an LTZ, not an RS. The LTZ has the same suspension as the LT/LS models, but the wheels are bigger and it has all the goodies.

Also, there's a 60HP power differential and my car is around 350 lbs heavier.

To be fair, it's an xB 1 and it's got 260k on it so maybe idk

Or maybe he's just being a royal dick.

I think if it did give any "black smoke" it's a combo of cold car, low octane gas, me accelerating from the wrong gear, etc. if it had a "big cloud" I'm pretty sure a tech would catch it.

I mentioned it to the sales guy, who is also the GM of the entire dealership, so he said his guys would check out and take care of all the issues.

The transmission just arrived, and they're doing the fuel pump too. To be honest, I'm excited cause I'm basically getting half a new car for my troubles.

This car has three overdrive gears; it's geared slightly taller than the Cruze Eco, which has a different gearbox from the regular manual Cruze.

At 70MPH the car is barely turning 2k rpm, where as the Yaris was over 3k.

An identical sonic with a sunroof (and 20k more miles) popped up on Autotrader on the way to pick up the one I have now.

Sunroofs are overrated.  Sure, they're great to have on the three perfectly nice days a year when you can really enjoy opening one.  But the other 362 days a year are either too hot, too cold or too rainy/snowy to make having one worthwhile.

I used my sunroof 300+ days a year when I had one, and I had the shade open 365.

Sunroof has lost its appeal to me. Most of the time I'm in the car I'm driving well beyond open fenestration speeds, and when I'm not it's too fcking hot! Also I don't feel the need to let everyone hear my music (which is usually NPR nowadays). Only reason I got a sunroof in my car is because Honda bundled sunroofs with rear discs, ABS and EBD in my car.

For what it's worth, nearly every car I've been in lately has a trip computer that's nearly spot on with the manual calculation. I can't recall a variation of more than 1.5 mpg, and most are within .5 mpg. The days of them being laughably unrealistic are hopefully behind us.

Yeah, the turbo really should have been standard. The 1.8-liter is just unacceptable in today's market. You can get a crossovers with better mileage than the 1.8-liter Sonic.

I got my car back, it's so much better with the new transmission!

They reflashed the ECU and did an update, the car has only done it once more since I got it back as far as starting rough. (It starts fine immediately aftwerwards). I checked, there's a service bulletin about this. The remedy is to use better fuel, first. Low quality fuel will cause it do to this.

My first tank was 87 octane, but now I'm going to run 91 or better in this car now. It also runs a hell of a lot better with 91-93 octane than it did with 87, even though GM says it *can* run on 87.

I think I need to learn how to drive it, I feel like me shutting off immediately after stopping isn't good for the Turbo.

I thought the turbo timing issue was with coking the oil, not with the turbo itself. It's not a problem with synthetic oil.

Soo, I got a CEL P0299. "Under boost" also with a slow car. This is fairly common, TBR's fiancee's actually set the same code this week on his 1.4T Cruze.

The wastegate actuator pin likes to get hung up, and usually it's open when it should be closed. I've got lumpy, little, or no boost.

Disappointed, more at the dealer than the car. The GM dealer that I bought this car off of is atrocious. They gave me the shittiest example of a loaner. And the loaner overheated in traffic!

No, just the turbo. The waste gate sticks OPEN not closed so no damage gets done. You just don't have boost.

It's so much better now. Boost comes on much linearly - and many people probably wouldn't be able to tell if it was a turbo car or not.

You guys.  It's the internet.  Don't take it so seriously   I kind of wish Char would take some swings at me, but I think he only goes after VW and Big 3.

+1 chill yo

I'll be driving a VW to work for the next few weeks until the El Camino is resurrected. MulletRacer is down, but RaceBug is still kickin! That is, until it runs over my dog, abducts my family, and turns the neighborhood into a toxic waste dump.

Char hasn't added anything to the discussion and due to his attitude prior to this point, his "that's terrible" comment is inflammatory.

Char has "done time" aka banned for a week already. His attitude is better than before. I've reviewed his recent posts. Can't hold him to a different standard because of his initial previous behaviour. Also, it shouldn't be a free pass for anyone to pile on.

Having said that, this is my thinking:

- The Spin is *mostly* a free for all and I'd like to keep it that way
- People can be really offended when things go over the line. Some do get offended, others don't but both are ok.
- If anyone gets really offended, report and we´ll take a look.
- If you get offended and escalate then you're part of that problem too.

Can't make everyone happy but I hope to help retain/attract members if we keep it a bit more civil.

The bolt pattern on these cars is the limiting factor, either requiring custom drilled wheels, or basically the handful of Sparco wheels for the car, but these cars seem to do OK with a spacer.

These Opel/Vauxhall Astra VXR wheels look dope on the hatch

They make these in a few colors, and they're like $75 a wheel, but I don't think they look very good.

I am sort of considering these, but maybe in Bronze. IDK

5x105.

It's shared with basically only the new GM small cars, not including the Spark (which is 4x100)

Those wheels are available on the Astra in Europe, so shipping and buying those will be a royal pain. Literally, Royal. They have to come from the UK.

I'm surprised no one makes replicas, but yeah if its that much trouble I can see why a lot of people don't bother. They do look good though! I think they fit the car's style as well.

So, I've been fighting with GM customer care

The Sonic generally is fine, but it'll occassionally crank and not start on the first try. It did this when I first bought it, and the Chevy store I bought it from is a 2.5 hour drive, and they after 5-6 visits threw pretty much everything at it but the kitchen sink, replacing most parts that touch fuel and spark. I have no invoices from this. Despite them saying they'd send it to me, they haven't.

Here's video I took

https://youtu.be/Bt1TKY4NZ8c

After replacing parts, they quoted a "TSB" that I still have no number for despite me requesting it - saying that this is normal operation.

Bullshit.

So I contacted GM customer care, and the GM customer care paid for diagnosis at another dealer close to me. That dealer said it may be the ECM or the Fuel Pump, after consulting with GM Technical Services. This problem has only happened on handful of other cars, it's rare.

Thing is, GM customer care told me today that they can't MAKE any dealer cover or repair anything. They say I should take that paperwork back to the dealer where I bought it from and then consult with them.

The ECM may be covered under warranty, but the fuel pump def isn't. I asked the old dealer several times "Are you sure it's not the ECM or fuel pump?" and they assured me that it wasn't.

WTF should I do? I feel like I shouldn't have to eat costs on a car I've owned eight weeks. A car where the dealer assured me from the start that they'd fix that issue, and spent six tries trying to remedy it.

To be fair, it does it less often then when I first got it. And it's more annoying and embarassing rather than bad for the car or unreliable.

I personally would be scared that it could be something else entirely. I had this happen on an old Taurus, replaced battery, turned out battery cable was corroded inside.  Or it might be a sensor somewhere?  (crank sensor on my SHO started giving me fits)

What good is a warranty if they won't fix whatever is wrong??

You might try contacting a news station and asking them if they've had complaints about x dealer.... ??

Perhaps dealer you bought from can pay dealer near you to do the fix??  Start with whatever is under warranty??

I'd be most concerned that it's going to get worse. The fact that it's endurable now doesn't mean that it always will be, and now is your chance to get it fixed on GM's dime -- which is part of what led you to a car with a warranty in the first place.

Even if it doesn't get worse, keep in mind that when you eventually sell the car, you don't want your buyer to try and take a test drive and have it fail to start on the first try. (I had that terrible sinking feeling when I was selling my previous Focus, though it turned out the guy apparently wasn't pushing in the clutch far enough, so it was easily solved.)

The engine is fine.

It's the rest of the car, plus what may have been a shitty tune.

Besides, a stuck open waste gate is a lot different of a failure than...burnt rings or hemmoraging oil.

The Fiats are less than mediocre in regards to build quality and reliability - my friends 1.4NA Gucci Fiat has the same miles, and also doesn't start every time. And it has a tendency to belch and bellow smoke occasionally.

That's not what my car is doing. It's cranking and until the auto start times out, but something isn't getting fuel. That car didn't crank or acknowledge the key.

My car turns right over on the 2nd try with no hesitation - if it was a fuel or spark issue it would likely have some hesitation upon starting. If it was an air issue, it would likely stall immediately, or run like trash until warmed up, if it would run at all.

For some reason, the ECU isn't sending the engine fuel. I don't think it's a fuel pump because I have zero drivability issues. I think it's the ECU itself.

The biggest problem I have is with the dealer I bought it from. I still only have maybe 1 invoice for all of the times I've been there. I can't say that all of these things are replaced, but have zero paperwork.

And to top it off, they told me this was NORMAL OPERATION after citing some service bulletin that they won't tell me or can seem to find the number to.

If you turn the key to run, let it wait for five to ten seconds, and then crank does it still do it?

Believe me, I thought of most everything. I initially suspected fuel pump - and I'd cycle the key to see if it was priming as it should.

The car is priming - most of the sonic forum guys think it's the ECU, because it starts up right away as normal.

Yeah that's happened to me many times. The first 2-3 times were because the ignition coil died, then last time was because the engine destroyed itself. Either way I've become very good at pulling over the side of the road.

Something similar happened to me in my last E90. If I coasted with the clutch in, the car would sometimes stall, so even at 50mph, the RPM would drop to 1000, bounce, and then zero out. Scary stuff.

Unreliable junk.

The saga continues - I woke up this rainy Saturday morning, started the car, only to be greeted with a flashing CEL, and illuminated Traction Control light.

I'm pretty sure it's electrical.

Time to sell and buy another Yaris.  You've had more problems with this car than I've had with 5 German cars in 15 years of car ownership.

Your patience is laudable, and you're a real trooper with the crap you've put up with, but you should've walked when the issues popped up on day one. In any case what's done is done and I hope this thing gets properly fixed. Maybe the dealer will let you trade for something else on the lot?

Its the same problem. Also, I haven't paid a cent. This is a dealer issue, not a car issue, mostly. The initial dealer threw parts at it before they made up a reason to basically get me to not come back (thus prompting a call to GM). The car has never left me stranded, stopped running, or anything etc. I also still like the car.

It's a dealer issue. Maybe I should have, but the dealer assured me they'd handle all of the issues before I took delivery, and the car had low miles etc. Maybe I should have gone for the other Sonic that popped up the same day I went to pick up the one I have.

It's clearly an electrical issue - there's no real point to "trading it in" when it's all been related to one issue and a dealer.

On most GM cars, the Stabilitrak is the first to illuminate when the ECM isn't getting enough power/ground. Remember, the car had an issue with the injectors not coming on (I could have sworn I said this in this thread but maybe not), intermittently. They replaced the ECM, but they could have just as easily half-assed this as well. The car isn't misfiring because of a spark issue, it was misfiring because all of the injectors didn't kick on - which seems odd and related to a power/ground issue rather than a new issue - this is the same issue. These aren't new issues that keep popping up because of the car, this is a dealer(s) who don't know how to diagnose things. And to be fair, new cars are complicated and sometimes shit happens.

Like

- Not Giving me invoices

- Quoting a made-up service bulletin telling me this is normal operation, prompting me to call GM to get a 2nd opinion?

The second dealer has actually taken steps to diagnose and solve my problem - I'm not upset with them.

The First dealer is the one who told me that not starting was normal operation, didn't give me any invoices after several requests (only gave me some after I called GM), and I still don't have a TSB number for this mysterous "normal operation" for the car not always starting on the first try. They threw parts at it, but didn't really attempt to diagnose anything, tbh. Maybe they did. I don't know. The fact they just told me BS to get me out of the service department is BS.

10K mile check in

I drive out of Lyft and Uber (primarily lyft) plus the fact that flipping cars takes me over the state, and I like driving this thing and I've driven it all over the midwest, and even Canada.

- Still does the random crank, no start. Super intermittently, so I'm more annoyed than angry

- I just replaced the front brakes. AC Delco rotors and some mid-grade ceramic pads to get rid of the vibration from shitty rotors and pads that were done.

- I replaced the tires with some Kumho Ecsta 4X - only $265 after rebate (before shipping). This is a really nice budget tire, I reccomend it. It's pretty grippy, fairly quiet, and does well in the rain.

- My Uber and Lyft passengers can't figure out that the car is NOT two door.

- My Lyft passengers remark that the car is really nice inside and 'suprisingly spacious'. They love the leather

- at least two people have remarked on how nice the exaust sounds

- a good 75% don't realize its a manual until they look down and exclaim ' that's a stick? WOW, you're really good at it! Most manual drivers ive ridden with make me nauscous with all the bucking and jerking'

- I really like driving this car, a lot.

- My average MPG is around 30MPG. Hitting that 40MPG requires slowing down to 65MPH. However, if I keep it at 70MPH, it'll do a still respectable 38MPG

End of summer check in

I've put on about 15K miles, partially Lyft has elevated my driving, but because this car is so much more drastically comfortable than the Yaris, I drive more and I'm usually the first to volunteer and show off my car on longer road trips.

I'm averaging a solid 31MPG (trip MPG hasn't changed from 31.4MPG for like three weeks now). I don't have the lightest foot, and the boost is addicting. The transmission is geared to you can say out of boost if you need to (I have three overdrive gears), but there is a penalty if you drive with your foot in it. 30MPG is about what the Yaris was getting, but I drove the Yaris slower. However, I also put 93+ octane in the Sonic, because I feel more comfortable with that, and the car is also more responsive with 93 octane. The car can run on 87 perfectly fine, but there is a notable drop in power and responsiveness.

- The car still randomly does the crank no start, but it's once in a blue moon so I've just learned to live with it.

- Man, the traction control is really invasive. If you even THINK about driving off with wheelspin at any point in time, Stabilitrak will crush all hopes and dreams

- This car is probably the most solid driving car in it's class. My friends like it.

- (Partially about my contempt for the iPhone 7), but my car has an old-style interface for the radio, and it doesn't work well with iPhones. If you try and do too many things with the iPhone or the steering wheel controls, the radio actually freezes and you have to disconnect the phone. Also the glovebox USB port doesn't really charge all that well. Some modern phones will still discharge while plugged in, instead of charge.

- The call bluetooth is great

- The streaming audio bluetooth is hot garbage, but that might be an iPhone thing?

- I don't have a spare tire. I don't know if the previous seller had it, or whether or not it was omitted on this trim

Either way, I'm still very happy with my purchase. I might tint the windows.

Glad the car is working out well.  If you're putting 93 octane in, you're paying the equivalent of a car getting 26 mpg using 87 octane gas.

Tires rotated, 2nd oil change.

I have 63K miles on the car currently, which means I've driven about 17K miles - I usually only drive around 300 miles a week, but lyft driving adds maybe another 100-150 a week (I don't do it as much)

I've also driven this car a lot of places - like Canada. It's an easy car to road trip. I like driving it a lot.

Versa S is near the Yaris level of roly poly understeery. It needs full suspension work to live up to the S in its name. Coilovers will not be super comfy on the street, but I don't carry passengers except dog. You do Uber pr whatever, so I agree that you probably want to start with the RS suspension ... and then see about an aftermarket rear sway bar. Maybe test drive an RS to see the difference.

BC Racing will custom make coilovers for you car, and with whatever spring rates you want. You can go with something reasonably soft for the the street, but still have all that adjustability. I am probably going with BC for Versa S, as soon as I dig $995 out of my ass.

It's been about a year since I bought the Sonic.

- I've put on 22,000 miles. Part of that is Lyft driving, but a lot of that is me driving this car everwhere because it's comfortable. I've done about 3-4 roadtrips over 1000 miles, and I'm probably gonna do a few more.

- Fuel economy is a solid 31MPG mixed. If I keep it under 70, I can do 40 ish, but 70 is too slow and the car is geared very tall so 65MPH in 6th; any sort of incline and the car will need to downshift

- I had a CEL come on for a gas cap. You'd think I'd be smart enough to realize it's a gas cap.  I ran out and panicked and bought a new gas cap, without checking if I had even put the current one on tight.

- Couple bruises and bumps from being parked on the street when I visited DC.

Other than that, It's been generally trouble free. I think I'm going to tint the windows and maybe put in an amp. The stock system seems kind of weak on power.

Title: Re: toot toot Sonic warrior

yeah, most of this is cosmetic. A lot of parts were undamaged - the bumper support has to be true'd up a lil, and it looks like the hit bent the intercooler a little. They're replacing both parts.

Whatever, I plan on keeping this car a long time.

95K check in

My Kumho Ecsta's wore out kind of quickly. That's a common complaint on this tire. They performed great, especially I only paid like $65 a tire. I I also got a flat (damn curb) so I replaced the bald ones up front with a decent set of Hankook tires (I can't remember the model name). The rear ones are still at 6/32's so I plan on driving them until summer time.

The driver's seat heater stopped working.

The stabilizer links broke (I drive like an ass) so I replaced those. ($12 for parts). Also the car was losing coolant; turns out the thermostat housing has a penchant for cracking for zero reason. The car would piss out coolant from the upper coolant hose. $20 part. $75 labor for both.

Other than that, it's still about the same as when I bought it. Some asshole dented the front pass side fender, but otherwise It's fine.

FWIW my rule of thumb was to put newer tires on the back (if I wasn't replacing them all). Its generally less disastrous if you lose grip in the front vs the back.

- Outer tie rods got replaced.

- Thermostat housing cracked (common on this car) and pissed coolant out everywhere.

About $200 for parts and Labor.

100k mile check in

I had a fairly serious issue last week with a short in the wiring to the knock sensor; and thus the car would retard the hell out of timing and the car would run like dogshit. Luckily, GM sells a splice kit to fix it. It was pretty awful tho; the car wouldn't maintain 70MPH in 6th.

Things I've replaced since the last check in

- six tires (two of them were due to OH potholes)

- coolant tank reservoir (common on this model to spring a leak)

- boost pressure sensor

- MAP sensor

- alternator

- belt tensioner and accessory belt

- tie rods (outer)

- suspension endlinks

- battery (mine was the original one to the car)

- PCV valve; the way this car is done, it's integrated into both the intake manifold and valve cover. The one in the intake manifold blew out, but I also decided to replace the valve cover too just to be safe.

- various alignments, oil changes, etc.

All of these parts are both cheap and accessible, including the intake manifold.

Never left me stranded. Still reliably gets 31MPG mixed.

Continental tires don't last long, though.

The tires, the suspension work and the battery is acceptable; assuming normal midwest pothole damage which no car comes through unscathed.

The other stuff is annoying; not quite in the "piece of shit" category yet, but definitely not signs of creamy goodness.

I'm like 95% sure that Kevin meant "100k miles since the last check-in," which really means 200k+ miles on the car. I don't know normal expected life for all those things, but that doesn't sound too bad to get from 100k to 200k.

Yeah, but Wimmer has 77k miles on his car. And you hold onto cars for what...six weeks?

I have 147k miles on my car, and I drive like 900+ miles a week.

I just realized that the initial post makes it sound like I have a 100k check in.

No, I've put 100k miles on the car since I bought it.

Secondly, all of these sensors are really accessible. The coolant reservoir cost $25 and is held on with two bolts. The Map and boost sensors are held on with one Torx T15 screw. The accessory belt is literally factory. The alternator actually still worked, just made noise, and once again the time it took for me to remove the alternator, intake, and replace both and the belt tensioner (it was also making noise) took literally 90 minutes.

I also did spark plugs...since well, I don't think I've ever changed them since I've owned the car.

Quote from: Soup DeVille on May 13, 2019, 03:14:24 PM
But didn't you replace the transmission like the day you got this?

Dealer did, for a shitty synchro after I complained.

100k miles later, it's fine. No scratches or grinds. Same clutch, even. Holds and engages all gears just fine.

If it makes you feel any better, my first Yaris had a slow synchro on 2nd; and my friends xB didn't have 5th until he decided to actually replace the trans at 228k.

Is it as reliable as say, an equivalent Honda or Toyota? Probably not. But everything so far has been easily serviceable, parts are really cheap, and once again...I've put 100k on the car since I've bought it. I'm still pleased with it. It drives well and looks good.

Not to say that Honda's and Toyota's don't have issues though - i'd Imagine most any car with close to 150k miles would start showing wear and other weird issues, too. All the important parts work; shifts good, holds all fluids. Doesn't use any oil or coolant. No weird sounds or suspension noises.

Now, if I were replacing all this shit at say...75k miles, yeah you'd have a point.

But 150k and all this shit, and a great deal of it was preventative maintenance? Sounds pretty good tbh. The integrated PCV/Intake is a dumb design, but the intake is only held on with six torx T30 screws, and it's pretty easy to take off. Tie rods and endlinks are basically wear items.

I think all of that shit combined was about $650  ish for the entire year, including labor for the things I paid to have done. I don't like doing suspension and front end work, so I paid my mechanic to do the tie rods and end links. (Not counting the tire replacements)

Yet and still, I knew what I was getting into when I bought the car. I'm not really pouring money into it every other week. The battery died last August, the tie rods and endlinks I did in November, and the alternator, intake, knock sensor wiring, spark plugs I did two days ago.

The coolant reservoir I'm not even going to count; it took me literally five minutes to change.

Check-in.

The car has 192K miles on it now.

I just replaced all four shocks, lower control arms, outer and inner tie rods, and did a brake job as well. The rear drums and shoes will also need attention soon. I checked about six months ago, and they were nearing the end of their lifespan.

Drums on FWD cars are great. Out of the cars I've owned, I think I've replaced the drums and shoes exactly one car; the Focus. And it had 150K miles.

It feels like a basically new car now, and hopefully it'll last me another 50K miles. It'll nice to be able to drive for awhile with no car payment. I like this car a lot.
