Said goodbye to my Subie Crosstrek today. Two days ago I noticed it was grinding when shifting into 4th gear. Just 4th. Didn't want to deal with a transmission repair (maybe a worn synchro?). Had just over a hundred thousand miles on it so I didn't feel too bad about dumping it. First time in my life I've had no car payments (my and my wife's car have been paid off since last summer and I returned a lease last summer). So I didn't want to take on a new monthly car payment and wanted to just buy another car and not finance.
Last night I was looking though Autotrader and was deciding between my favorite rental (Chrysler 300) vs a manual transmission car. Decided I wanted to keep shifting. Saw a certified 2018 Civic sedan for $13489.

Seemed too good to be true. It was. Fake deal. I called them and found out there's a required $1995 downpayment not included in the listed price. Bullshit false advertising. Then I found this:

So I bought it this afternoon. Got 10 grand for my Crosstrek as a trade in.
Couple of things I notice different than my former Crosstrek. It's so nice to not have to drive at over 3000 rpm while cruising on the highway. My Crosstrek had 5 gears and it was geared low. It made for noisy highway cruising. It's also really nice to sit down low to the ground. It feels sporty.
What's also nice is the base Veloster doesn't require synthetic oil, like the Crosstrek did. Much cheaper oil changes.

Yeah thanks man. It drives really great, although I've never driven a shift yourself Honda Civic to compare.

fun fun! I've loved the concept, never had a chance to get in one.
The front to back downward sloping roof line definitely looks cool. And I love the styling of the the rear of the car with the center fat muffler exhaust tip and small hatchback opening. Still plenty of room in the rear for my kids and I don't have to push any of the front seats forward. When it's just one of them, they sit in the front anyways. The relatively short side wall height on the tires are asking for a flat in the pot hole streets of the Northeast so I think I'll get dedicated winter tires beginning next snow season. Hopefully I won't get a flat because of a pot hole before then. That was never an issue on my Subie Crosstrek.

The stock shifter knob is much nicer than what came in the Crosstrek. I replaced the shifter knob in the Crosstrek with an aftermarket Flossy knob which I loved. I want to replace this knob as well but it's more complicated because it has a reverse lockout button. I've seen on Veloster forums where it can be done but it's more complicated to install. We'll see.

Is the rear door non-suicide now?
We saw one the other day and I said something to my wife about it, the handle being on the back seems it is non-suicide.
The newer Velosters are definitely cooler than the previous gen. Nice purchase

Yeah the three door design (not including hatch) is funky and not a suicide door (thankfully). Unless you're familiar with the car and really looking, you can't easily tell it's an asymmetrical 3 door layout because the handle on the one rear door is vertical and blends in really well with the rear door black window frame. So it just looks like a coupe.
Really easy for school drop off and pick ups with my kids since the back seat rear door is on the passenger side. It's obviously not a car meant for regularly taking adult passengers in the backseat. But for kids, unless they're pretty big (over 6 ft tall) it's fine.

Haha. The link was an autotrader link which they took down a day or two after I bought the car. It's the base model, a 2L 4 cylinder making a huge 147 hp :lol: They also have an up level turbo model and the N model which is 250-275 hp.
I didn't want a monthly payment so when cutting a bank check, every extra thousand dollars hurts a lot more :lol: Also my Crosstrek was slow as molasses and I never had any problems merging onto highways or overtaking cars. I could wring it out and never lose control of the car.
