Title: Are any of you one of those guys that tailgates virtually every other vehicle?
Post by: shp4man on March 22, 2012, 01:43:28 PM
I'm sure you've seen them on the road. The type of driver that habitually and regardless of speed, maintains a distance of about half a car length behind anybody that dares be in front of them and makes insane lane changes that depend on someone else braking to avoid a collision.
Who, if anyone, taught these people to drive? It seems to me there are more of these morons now than in the past. It's a good thing there isn't a .45 in my glovebox.
:rage:

Admit it. are you one of these guys?  ;)

These people do not exist in Louisiana.

If someone is driving slowly in the fast lane and doesn't get out of the way, I'll creep up and make it obvious I want to pass him.

I'm not but noticing them more and more. I purposefully will let the "packs" pass me or I tunnel through them, that's where the accidents happen.

PS- I want a paintball gun. I've proposed different colors for different infractions, your car gets covered with too many you get a ticket...

Packs are the worst. I admit, I get a bit antsy if I get stuck in them and work at getting through them.

I brake-checked a dude tailgating me this morning.  I was doing 32 in a 25 in the right lane and the left lane was wide open...fucker wouldn't go around me.  He slowed down with me; then I moved to the left lane and he went speeding on past me.

I hate tailgating.  My brother's pretty bad about it...drives me nuts.

Sometimes, if someone pulls out in front of me when clearly they shouldn't have (i.e., I have to apply moderate braking because of their dumb ass) I'll ride their butt for a few seconds to see if they get the picture, but if they don't speed up, I'll either back off again or just zip around them...depending on my mood, I suppose.

Not me.  I hate tailgaters.  I just gradually slow down if someone gets too close.  Funny thing is, most of them seem to be women these days.

I never tailgate. Can't stand being too close to cars, especially if they're brake happy.

Agree 100%. On slowing down gradually, and the female tailgating trend.

50% of the time I will indeed tailgate those driving under the speed limit; not super aggressive but close enough to be definitely classified as tailgating. I also do the hug-the-fog-line move to telegraph my displeasure.

You especially need to tailgate when you're in a carpool lane and you're the only dude in the car....

I only tailgate for a specific reason -- a car in the passing lane that should be over in the travel lane.  I don't get really close to the car in front of me.

Yep, but I have been known to get right up on their ass. I've also pulled out right, gunned it, and then cut them off in the left lane before speeding away. They usually stay in the left lane, even with a totally clear right lane. :rage:

Fortunately, people have reasonable good lane discipline around here, though they drive like fucking grammas through town.

If I'm already in a line of cars and there's no way for me to speed up, yeah, I'll sometimes slow waaay down just to convey my displeasure, then speed back up.  But otherwise I speed up or move over, whichever makes the most sense at the moment.

I'll only tailgate if they're in the left lane and won't move. Shows my displeasure, and also makes it easy to squeeze into the right lane to pass if I get a chance.

I don't think tailgating is a good way to communicate displeasure, as it just makes people angry (see MiataJohn's post about chucking washers at people tailgating him). I hope to scare people and/or make myself feel better.

I've found they are more likely to move over if I don't tailgate and just quickly flash my lights instead.  Tailgating just pisses them off and they mus think "screw you, now way am I moving out of this lane".

And in answer to the question, No, I don't tailgate.

Understand though that is a pretty drastic measure that I've done about twice.

First step is to slow down a bit and hope they go around.  If they then decide they need to ride my bumper (as in I can no longer see their headlights) they get a break check.  That doesn't work?  On comes the windscreen washers.  If none of the above works and depending on the circumstances and if I'm in the Miata one can simply rest their right hand on the passenger seat and flick up a bit of junk without being seen to do it.

I usually wait until I am next to another vehicle to slow, or, until I get close enough to another vehicle that the woman behind me thinks she can squirt around only to find out once over there that she cannot fit through.

Then I stick right there keeping them from passing until another car comes up behind (presuming there was one right behind the original tailgater) me and then box her out so she has to fall behind that one.

Not exactly legal, but it can be fun.  I never push it too far, however.  I have no desire to defend against a road rage incident.

The trouble is catching them in the act when in a fully marked patrol car.

Even standard police cars without lightbars are still easy to spot, and most agencies just do not have the money to spend on non-patrol rated cars for this type of enforcement.

Yes, it needs to be enforced, but where does the money for it come from?

In Michigan it is legal to just move over into the 'slow lane' and pass them.

I find the biggest groups of them here are;
1) women
2) foreign women
3) Illinios idiots
4) all of the above when talking on the phone

For what it is worth, Randy told me his traffic cars have issued a couple dozen tickets this year for texting while driving and commercial drivers talking on the phone.

They do that in Houston.  I believe how it works is they have a cop in an unmarked car, not even a usual cop car brand, driving along and when he sees someone driving like an ass he radios a cop in a marked crusier up ahead who pulls the guy over.

How about semi-marked?

Our state police have cars/suvs with nothing on the driver door but their full on emblem on the passenger door.

We also have a trend here of municipalities putting a shoulder patch sized emblem on the doors not too far underneath the mirrors and calling it a semi-marked car.  One of these tried to pull my wife over on US-131 not long ago at about 1am as she was coming home from the airport, she slowed to about 55 and called 911.

Once they found the car trying to stop her and verified it she pulled over.  The officer was actually not mad and told her he did not blame her, and appreciated her dropping below the posted limit of 70 to a reasonable speed.  He still gave her a ticket, however.

Does the term commercial drivers apply to police officers? I have been noticing more and more police officers around here talking on the cell phone while they are driving. I had one go past me this morning with his cell phone up to his ear while driving. If it is necessary for work shouldn't he at least be using some sort of bluetooth setup?

Nope.  I maintain a safe follow distance at all times.  When I need to pass someone, I pass.  If you're camping in the left and I can't pass on the right, you'll get my high beams though.

No, the law which prohibits commercial drivers (read: semi-trucks) is a federal law and only deals with those operating under commercial licenses.  Since police officers are not required to have CDLs they are not covered under the law.

And, yes, I see way way too many police officers with their damned phone glued to their ear.  In fact, that would be something which I was forcefully address were I a police administrator.  Same with officers wearing sunglasses during contacts with citizens.

I just don't like them in situations like you mentioned. If a "normal" car tried to pull me over, I'd be very cautious about it and probably call 911 to ask them to verify it, just like your wife did. Not that I'd be the best target for an impostor, but a guy with a gun would still be able to overpower me. A marked car is just nice because you pretty much know for sure that it's legit.

I find people pull into the right lane after you've come up on them, tailgating or not, maybe 70% of the time on open rural freeways, but almost never no matter what on urban freeways. Then again, in Seattle or Portland, I'm happy anytime I'm going faster than 30 mph.

In NY, an unmarked car cannot pull you over for a routine traffic infraction.  At least the State Police can't, not sure if the legislation to bar local departments from using unmarkeds for traffic enforcement has been passed.

Yeah, NY seems to have had an inordinate amount of shenanigans WRT impersonators pulling people over. I've never heard a great deal of concern in NJ over it, though.

I agree on both counts; but primarily because traffic is dense/chaotic - staying out of the left lane isn't practical a good portion of the time.

Around here, traffic is heavy enough that there's rarely enough room.  Either that, or it would require a dangerous amount of jockeying to pull it off.  If you get a left lane camper here, you're pretty much screwed.

Haven't seen too many around here, saw one on the highway yesterday. He was gaining on me pretty fast, and I had to slow down because of traffic, he nearly rear ended me (I was going 60-65 mph). I saw him smash his brakes and swerve to miss me. Then he proceeded to ride other cars' bumpers before getting off the highway not too long after.

I do drive very aggressively, but safety is still very important.  I consider tailgating to be aggressive without discipline, and therefore reckless.  If the person ahead of me is not going to move over with a high beam flash, intimidation via tailgating isn't going to work either.  I'd rather spot an opening and take the right hand pass if the other drivers on the road won't follow the rules of driving.  I just want them out of my way, I don't need them to get out of my way when I can put them in my rearview myself.  When you think about it, tailgating is kind of passive.  Like I said, when I need to pass, I'll pass, but I'm not going to sit in the left lane behind a camper and wait for them to come to their senses.  I'm on the attack; it would be like waiting for the goalkeeper to get out of the net before taking a shot instead of finding an opening and stuffing it in yourself.

I hate those guys in the Sprinter-Vans tailgaiting at 100 mph when there is clearly a long line of cars in front of me on the left lane. I usually pull over and let them pass as I have no desire to be crushed by a poorly-maintained van when I need to brake hard.

As for myself, I don't move too close, but in Germany it is allowed to flash the highbeams once to indicate that you want to pass, so I usually do this. If the car camping the left lane doesn't move then, I try again and then let some other more aggressive driver handle the job. It got way better now with the BMW's Xenon high-beam. They usually wake up sleeping left-lane campers in the night

You should really watch out for those Ford vans, too
Flashing is allowed here, it's just that people either never check their mirrors, so never move overr; or get pissed off and take it personally that your are insulting their penis size, and don't move over.

Not me.  I hate tailgaters.  I just gradually slow down if someone gets too close.  Funny thing is, most of them seem to be women these days.

Yeah I do the very same thing. In a rush? Oooohh.. so sorry. I seem to have misplaced my gas pedal.

Edit: To be clear, I don't do this in a passing lane.

I only tailgate for a specific reason -- a car in the passing lane that should be over in the travel lane.  I don't get really close to the car in front of me.

I'm too impatient for that. I love horns. It takes them a few seconds but most people will move. I guess most initially don't expect to be honked at.  :praise:

I try to leave reasonable stopping distances in front of myself but in traffic they get filled up so I wouldn't say I 'tailgate', but I should leave a bigger gap.

I have no problem passing people on the right on multi-lane highways/freeways. If people are cruising in the left lane they're usually too oblivious to how annoying they are to realize they should get over.

I'm not sure if I'm a particularly aggressive driver or not. I find myself changing lanes pretty often and passing lots of people—I pass others more than others pass me—but there are some out there who are orders of magnitude more aggressive than I am.

I'm mildly guilty of tailgating. I always leave enough room to stop but I'm heavy on the brakes in general so my perception of what's too close probably doesn't jive with everyone else's. I'm sure it often looks like I'm too close to the driver in front of me.

I've discovered a new dangerous animal on the roads since I moved to NC: the short stopper. I swear some of these creatures leave 2-3 car lengths between them and the next car at stop lights/signs. Now that I know to watch out for them, it's not a huge deal, but they can really mess you up if they're driving slowly on brake and decide to park it before they should. It also screws over following traffic because it takes longer to get through the light and they can block turning lanes.

And they clog up the line at drive-throughs. :rage:

I've found they are more likely to move over if I don't tailgate and just quickly flash my lights instead.  Tailgating just pisses them off and they mus think "screw you, now way am I moving out of this lane".

And in answer to the question, No, I don't tailgate.

I had some idiot come up behind me in the left lane while I was passing someone flashing his lights like a mad man and going about 90. I was going 81-82, and the person in the right lane was going 77-78, but I just slowed down and moved over to get out of his way because lord knows what he would have done if I hadn't.

Obviously that isn't what you were talking about, but I thought it was worth noting.

I pretty much never tailgate. I find that in the south you don't really need too because any most roads with heavy traffic (so that you can't just pass on the right, although obviously that isn't as desirable as left) have more than two lanes so you can figure something else out.

That would be fine, specifically because of the bolded part. I'm not a fan of unmarked cars pulling people over.

On this note, when I was returning home from school this May, there had been at least a couple of murders on rural interstates in Mississippi by a police impersonator (to the extent he was classified as a serial killer).

So, definitely do what hounddog's wife did, especially in rural areas.

I don't tailgate, because it is dangerous and causes road rage; I pass on the shoulder.

I've actually done this once. Fucker was sitting in the left lane for more than 5 minutes doing just above the speed limit. I tried flashing and getting up close. Not sure why the fuck he didn't move over, so I just gunned it and went around him on the shoulder. Never again though

Meanwhile the passing lane to my left was completely clear...

I've been driving the MDX lately, and I guess I've either been in a bad mood or driving an SUV induces rage in me, but every time I've gotten cut off, I'll tail gate the shit out of whoever just cut me off.

In the Miata I'll just downshift, floor it and pass and not think twice, but I guess the SUV is more intimidating so I like taking my anger out on the asshole who just cut me off.

That always amuses me. Some dude with little man syndrome in a big honking SUV that thinks he can intimidate me off the road. I used to get it from time to time when driving the Civic.

Where in that post did I say that's how I drive all the time?

No, when I'm in the MDX, usually on the highway I set the cruise to 65 mph and putter along in the right lane and relax. However, since it is an SUV, I'm particularly careful about leaving a lot of distance between me and the person in front of me (probably overcompensating the distance after being so used to the Miata and it's awesome brakes), so assholes view that as an invitation to squeeze into my safety space and cut me off. That's when I get mad and tailgate and/or cut them off. Probably not great behavior, but I never said that I drive like an asshole because I'm in an SUV. It's when someone pisses me off that I'm much more likely to retaliate. Otherwise I just drive slowly and much more relaxed than I would in the Miata.

The high position, and the belief that you're somehow invulnerable because your vehicle is so big.  I hate that mentality.  Safety is for everybody on the road, not just yourself.

SUV drivers are particularly bad.  My favorite is the way many of them think they can drive fast on snow because they have 4-wheel drive.  Asshole, 4-wheel drive only helps you get going; it doesn't help you to stop.

Oh yeah, they're great at low speeds, they're great for climbing out of a ditch or over a snow bank. They're great at a lot of things.

Somehow though, a vehicle that works well at 2 MPH tends to get twitchy at highway speeds.

You know what's more annoying that HIDs? Today I passed a cop on the side of the road with his spotlight on. A couple of other cars passed by and then he pulled out (assuming he had just finished a traffic stop). Those other cars ended up turning off at some point, so he was right behind me with his spotlight still on. Luckily it was still light outside so it wasn't really a big deal, but annoying nonetheless. Plus I had to stick to the speed limit.

I was super aggressive this week.  Today in particular.  They got two Mississippis before I made a move around them.  I actually did have a Golf get out of my way when I was going to pass him on the right though.

It is amazing though, how many "aggressive" drivers are so poor at moving through traffic.  They don't look forward.  They drive up, slam on the brakes, drive slowly, and then move right or left to pass.  Whereas if you're looking forward, you can move right or left to pass without ever having to slow down.

I came across one, but it was a "manly woman." We were in stop-n-go traffic, and she would allow some space to develop between her truck and mine, and then pretend to ram me by flooring the truck and then slamming on the brakes just before hitting my bumper to intimidate me. My windows were open, so she was also yelling out her window to me "you pussy ass bitch" etc.

The upper-middle class dude in the Mercedes next to me thought it was hilarious as well. I thought it was a bit scary-hilarious.

Did this happen in NOLA?

Yup. She was definitely an out-of-towner, though.

Probably on testosterone supplements. Nothing is more aggressive (or comical) than a butch dyke in a rage.

An obnoxious cab driver blared his horn at me today, evidently because I took longer than .0000002 seconds to react to a green light. The strange part was he didn't even seem to be in a hurry. I left the line in 2nd and he just vanished in my rearview. Not an easy feat in the Aveo.

...and I doubt you're a slow or nonresponsive driver...

I give people at least 5 seconds before they get the honk.

5 seconds!?

For me it depends on the light.  Average men's reaction to a traffic light is 1 second, for women it's 3 seconds.  I bridge the gap and give them two seconds on most lights.  There is, however, one light that you will sit at for five solid minutes if you don't get through, and it's a 15 second green or something ludicrous like that.  Four cars can get through if they all jump at it and the fourth guy enters on a yellow.  That's a half second.  Once I get to "1 Missis.." it's on the horn.  Throw your hands up at me like "I was playing with my cock/flicking my bean/smacking my clam/texting, what do you want from me?" and you get fucking followed home, murdered in front of your family, and eaten by a pack of wild dogs.

I have been passing really slow cars on the motorcycle on single lane roads with double yellow lines. I can usually blow around them pretty quick, sometimes not even crossing the lines. This is probably stupid and illegal. But satisfying.
More satisfying than yelling "Get the *uck out of the way, you ignorant SOB!"  :mrcool:
