Been checking the local Craigslist for a good project. Also started checking out other Craigslists in other states. It seems that if you're looking for a vintage pickup., the ones in Utah are the best condition and price. Do they salt the roads in Utah? There was some debate about it among my coworkers. How about Idaho, salt?
This would be a $5K truck here:

https://saltlakecity.craigslist.org/cto/5578733355.html

No salt in Idaho that I've seen, except maybe a rare parking lot. They use the blue ice melt and/or sand here.

I miss it, but it was wrong place wrong time - I was flat broke and couldn't afford to keep it as a project vehicle.

To show graphic evidence of just how crazy I really am, I really want this! Look how clean it is! And the price is right. It would require going over the rockers with a magnet, though. Nice paint can hide problems.

Check it out- paint's been on there since '61.

In a few years, I'll probably end up getting an old project car.  Woman likes vintage stuff and really wants like a pickup from the 60's.  I'm starting to pay attention more to the older stuff on bring a trailer to get an idea of what's out there.

Many of these guys have grand plans of "putting in a bigger engine"(zoom, zoom) then realize the amount of work needed. You can only hope they haven't ripped it apart yet.

You can restomod it; put a 428 with appropriate drive line; if you can find one.  Hurry up and get it.

289 to 351 should be pretty straightforward.
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

It's probably a crappy 351m smog motor. The 289 is better. Plus it's a Ford, not known for interchangeability.  ;)

Same small block for the 351 Windsor.  The '67 Fairlane GT was also available with the 390 FE.  Should also fit.

You're a mechanic, build one .  A 428 would be a lot simpler though, gobs of torque.

Put in an offer for this 58 F100. 223 6-banger, 3 on the tree, original. Let's see what happens. The interior is a time machine back to '58. ;)

The outside's a little rougher, but it's really straight.

Guy's asking $3k- brakes are all messed up. No biggie there.

Can't see the pics, but sounds cool. Brakes are easy. Good excuse to upgrade to discs too.

Screw that.  I'd convert it to airbrakes, just so it can go "pshhht" at stoplights.

LOL. Drum brakes are staying on, along with the straight axle. I'll ask the guy if he still has the OE wheels and hubcaps, though. You can actually buy re-pop parts for these old trucks.

Looks sweet.  Like straight out of Sanford and Son.  With a truck so old and weathered, aren't you afraid an axle will fail at speed from rust?  Just wondering.

Soup DeVille

That's sun rust, not northern tin worm. I'd bet the underside is in better shape rust wise than many 10 year old cars in the salt belt.

I don't know where you are, but here, we get rust in the roof and sometimes when there there's a leaking window or a body seam that fills with sand, but it's not much of an issue.

shp4man

Went and checked out the truck last night- it's a bit rougher than the pictures show, weatherstrips gone in the doors, some surface rust in the floorboards. It would make a killer rat rod.
Like this:

So, that would require Bondo work (mine) a Maaco satin black paint job--$400, new wide white tires, $500, full moon hub caps, $325.
Plus, needs master cylinder and wheel cylinders, minor other shit, $250-$500.

I'm thinking about a $1500 offer. Guy probably won't take it, but whatever.

Edit: And a cool pin striping job! $200?

CaminoRacer

I can't recommend a Maaco job to anyone. Or satin black, to be honest. flat white would be dope though. I know a couple who painted their Ford Unibody flat white and it looks great

White would be cool, but greasy fingerprints?

Advantages of white are that it literally is cooler (temp wise), hides dents better, and would look just as cool (the other kind) as black. Disadvantages are you can't buy touch up at the Walmart spraypaint area, and wouldn't want a white interior. Thinking about it.
Truck has those shitty modular wheels, but full moons would cover them nicely, and for cheap:

Couldn't really put it in the weeds without a dropped front axle--$500-600.  :frown:

Here's the white Unibody:

But the nice thing about an old rust free truck is that just about anything looks cool.

Yeah, grease is gonna show up on any paint finish...matte, satin, cleared, or otherwise.  Something matte or satin is gonna be harder to clean and keep clean, though.
