Looks a lot better than the Solstice imho.
Same, though I think it would look better if they went for a cleaner look.
Meh...it looks good, but I like the Solstice better. :praise:
Very nice, but it seems as if the Solstice is coming out sooner. So that will influence many decisions if the powerplants are the same.
The Sky will also be more expensive.
I really like this roadster...a lot better than the Solstice.
QuoteThe Sky will also be more expensive.
Yeah, but it will probably have more standard equipment also (the Solstice won't even have A/C standard, just so that they can advertise a sticker price lower than the Miatas).

I believe the Sky is intended to be a more-upscale vehicle, so it will probably be more expensive than a comparably-equipped Solstice.

Perhaps, who knows what will happen when GM is the one doing the figuring? ;)
Its ok....clean it up a little...slap a bigger motor in it...then we'll talk
I never quite understand why the more luxurious version is being badged as a Saturn. Saturns have never been known for being luxurious.
It's not luxurious, it's just upscale. The same way an S2K is more upscale than an MR2, though no more luxurious.

Well put.
QuoteIt's not luxurious, it's just upscale. The same way an S2K is more upscale than an MR2, though no more luxurious.
The only problem with that is that the S2k isn't more upscale than the MR2, it just has more power.

It's a higher-end sports car, for its additional power, for its additional handling capabilities, for its better shifter, and for whatever other reasons. Luxury just doesn't happen to factor into the fact that its a more-upscale car.

But the Solstice and Sky will be identical mechanically.

I'm only going by what I've read, and according to that, the Sky will be a more-upscale version of the Solstice.

I think you may be over-estimating the S2000's handling capabilities. It has more power and a better interior, more space, but I don't think it would handle better than the MR-2.

Based on my (non-track) evaluation, they both handle extremely well but differently. The MR-2 is more of a tossable fun car, like a Miata more than an Elise, while the S2K is sharper and more precise.
I honestly think this is one of the best-looking cars available (or will be anyway), if not the best.

Actually, I suspect it will be pretty much impossible to get even the Solstice without A/C, you would probably have to special order it, no dealer would be stupid enough to carry one without such a popular feature like A/C. They will probably sell less than 100 Solstices without A/C, they just want to be able to advertise a base price lower than the Miata's.

While your statements are "true," you are making some disingenuous connotations.
Your statement, "They will probably sell less than 100 Solstices without A/C, they just want to be able to advertise a base price lower than the Miata's" for instance implies that with A/C, the Solstice would not be able to advertise a lower price than the Miata.
Let's be clear: The Miata also does not offer A/C on its base version.
That being said, a Solstice equipped with A/C is still cheaper than a Miata without A/C (20,955 vs 20,995).
In the end there is absolutely zero reason to put any qulifiers when talking about the Solstice being a less expensive car than the Miata. Using MSRP you just won't be able to equip them evenly and get the Miata to be cheaper.
Now...did GM do this "so they could advertise it cheaper than the Miata." Well yes...but they actually are making it cheaper than a Miata...why wouldn't they want to advertise this?
Its like saying the only reason mazda made the 2006 Miata cheaper than the 2005 version was "just so they could advertise it as being a better deal."
Sorry for the long post, I just don't understand why people don't want to give credit to GM for doing something right once.
I admit that I haven't spent much time looking at the Solstice's pricing, but I don't understand how not offering A/C is the right thing, next to no one will buy a Solstice without it.
No one? Even ten people chosing ten vehicles produced without an air conditioner is still someone, and it lets them advertise a lower base price.
QuoteI admit that I haven't spent much time looking at the Solstice's pricing, but I don't understand how not offering A/C is the right thing, next to no one will buy a Solstice without it.
The Solstice was made specifically to compete with the Miata. Neither car offer A/C standard.
So again, saying something like GM only did that "to advertise a lower base price than a Miata" when the Miata also doesn't offer A/C standard is disingenuous. Combine that with the fact that if you add A/C to the Solstice and it is still cheaper than a Miata without A/C, the statement is even more rediculous IMHO.
That fact that you didn't even bother to check prices before making your statement just says to me "I don't like GM, so I will assume they are doing something tricky!"

Since when do I not like GM? I am just saying the strategy doesn't make sense, and Mazda using it doesn't make sense either.

It does have that roundish look to it.
I think you guys may be forgetting there's another reason to offer a Solstice without A/C: track "enthusiasts" who will take any hit to lose a little weight on the vehicle. If I'm not incorrect, I believe the Solstice comes with crank windows in its base version, (as does the Lotus Elise). This is not strictly a cost-cutting measure.

Then they have to buy something else or rip the parts out themselves.

how do you rip out power windows and door locks then?

Actually, I did think of that, but if someone is that concerned about weight they would get a MR2 or Miata, both of which are much lighter than the Solstice, even with A/C.

If you care that much about weight you're probably racing, in which case you would either fix the windows in place or take them out all togehter.

but then i wouldn't be able to use it as a daily driver. I'd either be baked to death in the car, or it'd easily get stolen. Saturn should make a Sky for racing, too.
On the A/C idea, if you had a convertible like that, something you would only drive on the weekends and when it is warm and sunny, would you necessarily want to pay for A/C when you would very rarely want to use it. I would probably always have my top down and windows down, in those situations having the A/C on is just stupid. I probably would not get it if it was a 3rd car for fun.

You would drive a car without A/C as a daily driver? You apparantly don't live in Texas or anywhere else where it is moderately hot.
QuoteYou would drive a car without A/C as a daily driver? You apparantly don't live in Texas or anywhere else where it is moderately hot.
I wouldn't
buy a car that didn't have A/C, but 90% of the time when it's hot, I just roll down (well press the button) the window, and turn on the vents. Let's not forget people survived for many a year without even the option of A/C in cars, or otherwise.
I have yet to see the Sky with the roof up. I hope it's not as screwed up looking as the Solstice. Secondly, I really want this car to be of solid quality inside and out. It's gonna suck if the interiors fall apart and the gaps are huge. It needs to be a solid car.

I almost never use the a/c, my car lacks power as it is, and really struggles up hills with the air conditioner on, even without passengers.
I use aircon all the time...especially in the summer. In 40-60 degree weather, I use the heat because I drive with the windows open.

Yes, but these days even the sports car extremist wouldn't chose to get a daily driver without it.
