Four-Cylinder Toyota Supra Looks To Be Heading Stateside

The four-cylinder Toyota Supra looks to be heading to the U.S. market and according to Motor Trend, it could be revealed as early as this week.

The publication recently had the opportunity to speak to Toyota's group vice president of marketing Ed Laukes at the Chicago Auto Show and asked if a four-cylinder Supra was coming. Laukes responded by saying people should stay tuned for next week.



Next week just so happens to be the Daytona 500 and with Toyota running seven of the 43 vehicles entering the race, it seems probable the event will double as an opportunity for the Japanese automaker to announce a new entry-level Supra model.

Talk of the four-cylinder Toyota Supra coming to the United States is nothing new as in April, 2019, the four-cylinder Supra was certified by the California Air Resources Board.

The four-cylinder Toyota Supra is already available in Japan and Europe. In the Land of the Rising Sun, the base-spec four-cylinder is good for 194 hp and 236 lb-ft (320 Nm) of torque while a more powerful version with 225 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) is also available. In Europe, the four-cylinder model pumps out 255 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm), the same as the BMW Z4 sDrive30i that also uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo. It seems most likely that the U.S. will get the 255 hp version of this engine.

Prices for the 2020 Toyota Supra start at $49,990 excluding a destination fee in the United States. The four-cylinder model will come at an obvious discount, perhaps somewhere around the $45,000 mark.

Oh, this is a real thing.
So, basically, it will have a hard time beating a 1996 Jeep Cherokee in the quarter mile, have significantly less dog room, and cost $49,340 more.

I don't see what the problem is. AFAIK the Supra was always a more expensive Toyota performance product whereas the affordable performance Toyotas were the MR2 and the Celica, both essentially replaced by the affordable GT-86.

Let's not forget that past Supras also had base and weaker inline-6s. 

A 4-cylinder Supra would allow for more sales, and not everyone wants/needs the performance of the inline-6 model. Some folks are actually perfectly content with the performance of this 4-cylinder model. It's not like everyone buying these Supras is a diehard Supra guy/girl. Plus 255-horsepower coupled to an excellent modern A/T means this thing won't be slow at all.

Good point. The base engine should really be a NA I6.
