Next VW Golf GTI To Have As Much Power As The Current Golf R?

The eighth-gen Golf might have been prematurely revealed, yet it is approximately six months away from hitting production, and it's logical to expect a launch sometime between this spring and summer.



Inevitably, the Golf MK8 will, later on, get GTI and R performance derivatives as well. And, according to AutoBild, the GTI might get up to 300 PS (296 hp / 221 kW), a significant improvement over the current one's 245 PS (241 hp / 180 kW).

We're going to take this piece of information with a grain of salt for now, for one reason: that's the outgoing Golf R's territory. The German website didn't go into specifics, but in all likelihood, the upcoming GTI should maintain its front-wheel drive system, whereas the R will still be offered with all-wheel drive.

So, when should we see the all-new Golf GTI with the rumored firepower? That would be 2020, as per the quoted report, which also claims that it should be priced close to €33,000 (~$37,800) in Germany, or about the same as the current iteration.

Volkswagen is, in all likelihood, sending of the current-gen GTI with the TCR, a 290 PS (286 HP) version of the FWD model that's awfully close to the 300 PS (296 HP) R. But what about the rumored Golf R420 that was spied last year and was supposed to use a 420 PS (414 HP) version of Audi RS3's 2.5-liter five-cylinder?

Maybe that Golf mule was not the R420 after all, then. Guess we'll find out sooner rather than later.

I'm surprised these next-generation cars are even allowed to have a socially unacceptable power output of 400-horsepower based on all the CO2 and climate change hysteria happening all across the world... eh only in Germany.

A 2200 lb, $16K GTI?  You want 40 mpg and blow job with that too?   

A car like that is literally impossible to sell profitably in this day and age.  The closest would be something like the Civic Si and that is 25K and ~2800 lbs.

It's about time.  Companies have been putting more than 200hp into FWD cars successfully for a while now.

I think it would be pretty cool to take an '89-91 Civic and drop any modern 200 HP FWD setup under the hood. Reliablity, stupid fast, super handling, comfortable enough ride, excellent MPG, clean emissions, and none of the extra weight. VR6 would fit?

That would be great, but seriously the GTi starts in the low-mid 30's up here. And drop 500 lbs then. No small car should weigh 3300+ lbs.

2 door GTIs are overrated and they weigh ~3100lbs

More importantly they are short AF which makes them feel a lot lighter than the curb weight suggests. 2 series only weighs like 50lb less than a 3 series but feels 500lbs lighter due to the much shorter wheelbase.

Plus lopping 500-1000lb out of them will kill the refinement that makes the GTI such a great all rounder

Hence the suggestion... get a MK1 and do an engine swap

Yeah I had a 2 door GTI...was a mistake. Should have gotten a 4 door...not having the backdoors was a complete waste. It didn't drive better and IMHO it didn't look better.

No one can. VW has stopped making 2 door Golfs.

The Polo GTI starts at €23,500 here including 19% VAT with  200hp and a 6 speed manual. However that is 4 doors as well.

Yeah I had a 2 door GTI...was a mistake. Should have gotten a 4 door...not having the backdoors was a complete waste. It didn't drive better and IMHO it didn't look better.

I always thought the 4 door GTI looked like a clown car, but I 150% would've gone for one if I could do it again.

When I was younger, I preferred the two door.  But at this age, if you've got four seats and the same general shape as the four door, why would you not get the four door?  If you've got useless rear seats, like in a 911, then two doors is fine.  But in a GTI?  Four doors or bust.

Yeah if you are going to really utilize the 2 door shape for style I can see the benefit...but the GTI is the wrong car.

The TT is a good example for Audi, but the Scirocco is a (less extreme) good example for VW.
