Title: As?na: WTF?
Post by: Laconian on January 29, 2009, 11:20:47 PM
Do any Canadian members of the board remember a car make called "As?na"?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/As%C3%BCna

It was a badge engineer marque based off Geo's products, which was in itself all about badge engineering. Two levels of badge engineering. GM... *facepalm*

Yup. Rebadged Isuzus, Daewoos and Suzukis.  :nutty:

Funny... when I Google Image "Asuna", I get 3 pages of Manga pr0n before I get an actual car.

I rather like that you guys got the original Impulse instead of the Geo Storm for the Asuna.

Are they US-legal?

Isuzu IIRC, was not sold in Canada. (Or at least their car lineup) The US got their I-Mark(Gemini) and Impulse (Gemini Coupe) here as Geos.

Yes we did, except for the Impulse, which was rebadged as an Asuna. We got the I-Mark and Stylus.

What a horrible name. Did GM lock some people up in a room and force them to come up with "catchy / youth-appealing" car names?

Person 1: "I drive an Asuna!"

Person 2: "Wow!"

I thought US standards were not as strict as canadian ones

In many ways, you're right, but that doesn't mean there aren't hoops to jump through (Look at the trouble we had with the Motorex Skylines).

So when it's 2014 and the R32 Skyline turns 25, will I be able to buy one and drive it in the US?

Yes, assuming that law doesn't change in the meantime.

No, we got the Impulse too. We got all the same Isuzu cars.

We also had the Chevy Spectrum (I think it was sold in the States as a Geo) and the Pontiac Sunburst (same thing, rebagded Isuzu).

Yep. It was almost my first car.

I remember Asuna.

We did get the Impulse as well though. A buddy of mine had one and it was a Canadian car.

It was apparently a Geo for Buick-Pontiac-GMC dealers. Makes more sense than selling subcompact Isuzu Impulses as Buicks, Pontiacs, or GMCs while still supplying the small cars Canadian buyers are fond of.
