My new year's motorcycle shenanigans

So last week, I randomly decided to put my WR250X up for sale. Being the middle of winter, and a relatively unknown bike at a not cheap price, I figured I'd be sitting on it for a while. There was also an '04 SV650 naked with GSXR front end and Elka rear shock, Leo Vince exhaust, etc, for sale. I made plans to go see the bike Saturday (12/31), and then on Friday I went to get the money. As soon as I got back home from the bank, the SV was sold.

In a fit of rage, I decided to go look at a dirt bike. I had had my eye on a couple, but wasn't really planning on buying anything. Since I had the money, though, I figured why not check one out? Since I had nothing to do as I was planning on buying the SV, I decided to just go check out a YZ426f for sale on the local forum that was about 15 min away from me. I threw the trailer on the Miata and went to check it out with my roommate. Long story short:

On the WR front, I was getting a crazy amount of responses. Tons of people wanted trades and people were basically lining up for it. One guy wanted to see it Sunday (1/1) and was coming from 2.5 hours away, so I held on to it for him. He checked it out Sunday morning and bought it. That left me with no street bike, aka no way to get to work. I didn't think the bike would sell that fast. Luckily I had already been CL hunting for a few weeks and had some good leads.

Today (1/2) I went to check out a 2007 GSXR750 with only 2500 miles. What the ad neglected to say was how much damage was on the right fairing and that it hadn't been registered since 2011.

After wasting my morning on the GSXR750, I called about a nice looking FZ1. 12k miles, never dropped, and in a cool color. After a bit of haggling:

I'll post my impressions later.

So you have a dirtbike now?

Yep. It needs a new front tire and throttle cables and grips so it's currently in pieces in the garage. Hoping to have it together soon, but I still need to register both bikes at the DMV and insure the FZ so I'm going to get buttraped.

Did you ride the 426 before buying it?

Yeah. I couldn't kick it over but my roommate started it and I rode it.

Yeah they are giant. It's not too bad (yet). I haven't tried riding in SF yet so I'm not sure how it'll fare.

I'll post impressions in a separate post. Right now I'm going to order swingarm spools, frame sliders and a new windshield. This aftermarket PowerBronze one directs all the airflow into my helmet. I need a shorter one that will hit my chest instead.

Do you know how to use the manual decompresser when starting?  And God help you if you stall it when the motor is hot.  Even the newer thumpers don't restart very well hot, but those earlier bikes were awful.

Also, did you ride it on dirt?  The 426 was the first generation of modern 4-stroke MX bikes.  My dad had one back in the day.  I remember it being quite nose heavy, which made it much less nimble in technical stuff compared to 250 2-strokes.  Lots of power, too.  Could be a handful of you didn't know what you were doing.  For that vintage of bike, I'd take a YZ250 2-stroke every day of the week.

Also, when was the top end last rebuilt?  Those MX grade thumpers are very particular about regular top end rebuilds.  Trying to stretch it can cost a heap of money (new jug and head).  Another reason I'd take a 2-stroke.  Cheaper top end rebuilds and way cheaper if you do blow the motor.

I rode my friend's YZ250 2 stroke and did not enjoy it a whole lot.

Yes, I know about the manual decompression lever. My roommate had one back when it was brand new so he knows a lot about the bikes. It has a new head on it (though not sure what condition its in). I'm just not used to kick starting bikes, and while I could kick start my friend's YZ250 after some practice, the 4 stroke seems much harder to do. I also didn't have my MX boots and trying to do it in my thin regular shoes was extra hard. The motor also has a hot start button/pull so it should be OK.

I didn't ride it on dirt, but I've got long legs. I should be OK. I rode my friend's Husky FE501S with lights and that didn't seem bad at all.

OK, I bought a front tire, throttle tube and cables and grips for the YZ. Still need to buy some hand guards.

I also bought a Double Bubble windscreen, Shogun frame sliders and Pitbull swingarm spools for the FZ.

Those thumpers kick a lot harder than a 2-stroke.  I grew up kick starting bikes and found those early thumpers tough to kick over, even with proper footwear.  And even with the hot start button, they don't start worth a damn.  20 kicks or more.  Many a pro went from near the front of the pack to a lap down in races because they tipped over or just stalled braking into a corner with those early bikes.

What vintage 250 did you ride and what didn't you like about it?  The ones of the same vintage as the 426 were super tractable.  Best factory 250 2-stroke motors ever made, IMO.  And the chassis and weight balance were way better than the thumpers.  Much less tiring to ride, as well.

I rode an '02 YZ250. I just don't like how peaky 2 strokes are, since I'm still so new to riding. Yeah, I could get around the trail OK but it was unpredictable, and my roommate said it's not good to keep the engine out of the pipe, and that lugging it could destroy it easily. My friend's 4 stroke Husky was a lot more fun to ride since it would just tractor pull its way out of most situations with me needing to constantly shift.

Also worth noting - I had to get an '02 or older bike since California stopped issuing green stickers after '02. '03 and up dirt bikes for the most part have red stickers, which means you can't use them in public parks for most of the year. Green stickers can be used year round.

'02 shouldn't have been very peaky.  Also, on the pipe doesn't mean on the rev limiter.  You can run them safely at mid RPMs without any issues.  I've had 2-stroke Enduro bikes, so they don't have to be screamed.  If you don't like the snappiness, you can play with sprocket sizes.  Probably even get a heavier flywheel.  Whatever, bike is bought and they weren't bad bikes, but as someone with quite a bit of off-road experience and experience with those pre-03 machines, not the bike I'd have gotten.

I don't think I ever took the YZ to the limiter. You can tell when it's off the pipe, and every time it tried to ramp up in power I'd get scared and upshift, which meant it never got into its powerband and I was just chugging around. I like the powerban  d of a 4 stroke more and honestly a little extra weight isn't going to bother me. Hopefully I can get the thing started, though.

Dammit, I want to get a full exhaust for the FZ now. I can save ~20lb and improve the looks a lot, but I like the way the bike sounds stock.

Plus I'd have to spend more money on the EXUP eliminator and AIS blockoff kit. And then hope I can find a tune for it that works. Sigh.

You should have stayed in it.  250s are actually pretty linear when the come on the pipe.  Especially YZs of that vintage.  The surge isn't much more pronounced than a 4-stroke when it comes into its power band.

Also, they are on the pipe by 4000-4500 rpm.  Considering they idle at 1500-2000, you must have really been puttering around if you never got it onto the pipe.

Let's just say it kept dying because I'd try and coast everywhere with the clutch pulled in and it didn't like to idle.

If you were that intimidated by a 250 smoker, a 426 probably isn't the best bike for you.  It's not just a matter of intentionally keeping the bike at low RPMs.  Unlike the street, you don't always have the same level of control when the going gets rough (see: "Whiskey Throttle").

I'd recommend looking for a WR426 ignition box.
