Toyota Copen GR Sport Is A New Tiny Convertible Sports Car For Japan

Japan's car world never ceases to amaze us, and while we've seen the nameplate before as a Daihatsu, Toyota's latest product, the Copen GR Sport, is the brainchild of its Gazoo Racing division.

Presented online ahead of the dealer unveiling set for November 9 and 10, the kei-car that sports an electrically-operated folding hardtop, will launch exclusively in the Land of the Rising Sun.

It has an MSRP of 2,435,000 YEN ($22,480) for the 5-speed manual transmission version and 2,380,000 ($21,972) for the CVT. Both are powered by a 660 cc turbocharged engine with front-wheel drive and a limited-slip differential. Toyota said their new convertible features a specially tuned electric power steering and optimized suspension spring rate and shock absorbers.

Several GR components are offered at a premium. For the front apron, you will have to pay 51,700 YEN ($477), whereas the front side blades will set you back another 44,000 YEN ($406). The side skirts, rear side spoiler and trunk spoiler cost 66,000, 47,300 and 22,000 YEN ($609/437/203), respectively.

On the outside, the Copen GR Sport has been enhanced with the restyled front and rear bumpers and radiator grille. It rides on BBS forged alloys and packs LED headlights, taillights and fog lamps, and a 'GR Sport' emblem. Eight exterior colors are available, but no matter which one you choose, the interior is all black.

Speaking of the cockpit, it gets Recaro sports seats with 'GR' embroidery, leather-wrapped steering wheel with the same emblem and metallic inserts made by Momo and piano black trim.

Why would they release press photos of it in a gas station   Considering the weight and engine, this thing probably gets gas mileage like a bike and will rarely go to said gas station.

Either way, I think it looks kinda frumpy.  Give me the Honda S660 or whatever its called instead.

Did Toyota buy Daihatsu at some time? (The original Copen was a Daihatsu)

Wikipedia says...

2016 – Toyota purchases Daihatsu's remaining assets, and therefore makes Daihatsu a wholly owned subsidiary.

Yeah it was wholly absorbed a couple years back.

It's cool, but nowhere as cool as the Honda S660 which I would totally buy if it were here

I used to walk past an old Copen everyday when I lived in Tokyo.  A yellow one.  This is far less cutesy than the old model.  I wonder if that'll hurt it or help it.

It's like the car world thought "go ugly early" applies to them too.

I like the design of this better than the S660, but the Honda is mid-engine and rwd, so I'd rather have that one too.

Cars in this class have so little power and the engines weigh so little, neither of those are big deals.
