Spent half the day installing a stereo in a Corvette. With an amp. With component speakers. With crossovers. With backup camera. With ... fuck, everything.

So I bent all 8 intake valves on a car that I was just doing a timing chain job because I can't fucking think straight right now.

For just the valve cover gasket?

Well, the valve cover is actually the top half of the camshaft bearings. And the gasket is RTV silicone. And it's stupid.

Am I doing it wrong if I charge certain people more or less labor hours? When I get a 20 year old, beat up car with carseats and a disabled tag, I have a hard time charging full hours for something like a brake job.

I don't care about sob stories. It's the people who say nothing but clearly need some help.

Would you expect the plumber to "give you a break" if you told him your dog just died and the welfare check done blew out the winnder?

Think the plumber's boss might have an opinion on that one?

If they're not grifters spinning sob stories, and they clearly need a break, it's good to help them out. Provided you have the means.
