Anyone look into getting a Grom?

I figure this would be a great little bike if I'm just riding around the city since it's so cheap and I'm figuring insurance should be pretty cheap since it's only a 125.

Fuck no. A used EX250 is better in every way.

Something between a moped and a pit bike; but better looking. I like them; but I can't say that Sean is wrong. You can get a used 250 anything and have a more usable bike.
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

I'm kind of thinking about getting one in the spring. Just trying to decide how much I'd want to go on the interstate with a bike, since a Grom can't. For around town or mountain roads, a Grom seems like a blast. Lots of mods available for them too. I think you can bore them out to get 170cc, plus intake and exhaust.

I feel like a CBR300 will be just as fun, while also not being a complete death trap on the highway. I am thinking the novelty would get old fast.

Groms aren't legal for highway use, much like many scooters.

Here, some signs on interstates specify no cycles under 5 HP.

Depends on the state.

I kind of like the toy aspect of a Grom.

There's 3 different bikes I'd like (and could afford right now):
- Grom
- CBR500R
- some sort of cafe racer, probably a Honda since those are cheap and plentiful

Grom could be brand new, CBR500R would be a couple years old, and a cafe racer would be from the 80s. Cafe racer looks the coolest, but would require most maintenance and tinkering. CBR500R would be the most useful, but heavier and could get me into more trouble. Grom would be a fun ride around town and fairly maintenance-free.

You'd probably get into more trouble on a cafe racer than a CBR500, depending on what you get.  Honda detuned the motor to meet Euro tiered licensing.  I don't think they even make 50 horse.  My brother's 70s era 750 is faster than a new 500 Honda.

Getting a CBR500 and then waiting until I have more $$ to get a new Triumph or Ducati cafe racer might be the best option.

Sure. I got a used V-Strom 650 for the price of a new Grom. It was a good deal. Get the bike that best suits the riding you will do. Grom is for city, eh.

164cc big bore kit. Also looks like it increases the redline, so you can get up to 80 mph without even changing the sprocket.

Grom, Jesus.   Craigslist an older Sportster that some old fart can't ride anymore, take all the old fart shit off of it and make it cool. Simple, satisfying and cheap and you will be cool. I guarantee it!
Chicks will be diggin' it, cause bad boys win the prize. :muffin:

Saw these at the Kawi tent today in Daytona.  At first glance, I thought they were Groms and I was thinking "why are there Groms under the Kawi tent?".  Then I got closer and saw they were green.

I find it odd that a ton of people are complaining about Grom prices - the dealer in Cincinnati has like 5 Groms at MSRP.

After spending most of my MSF course on a Grom, I think if I had the money sitting around and wanted a little bike to just run errands on, I'd get a Grom fo sho. I don't think it has even enough power to be safe on major city streets (where flow of traffic is 40-50 mph), but say in traffic downtown or something I think it'd be a terrific little toy.

Thats an expensive toy

I'd rather just get a bicycle for like 1/5th the cost
