Seems like a rookie mistake. I don't know what his exact route was, but using A Better Route Planner (ABRP) app can help avoid stuff like that. Fast charging is expensive compared to level 1 or 2, but it shouldn't cost you that much. That's why everyone says to stop charging once you hit 80% on a Level 3 fast charger.
200 mile route shouldn't have even needed to charge unless he planned on driving 75+ mph. Seems like a level 2 destination charger might have been a better option? Idk.

At for people like when back when I used to go into work, the cost would be $0. Even at California peak rates of $0.45/c per Kwh is $4.28 for their 38miles of range. which is less than the price of a gallon of gas. Assuming comparing to a vehicle with similar dimensions, you're likely looking at similar mileage of of 38mpg. So the average would be break even. Of course you can charge at off peak hours which most people do at $0.17c per Kwh giving you $1.62 for 38 miles of range making it significantly cheaper than average gas prices today.
Cost my wife $24 to charge the Bolt on her trip to Tennessee this past weekend at Electrify America charging stations. 461 miles. That's the cost equivalent of gassing up a 60 mpg car for that trip. Normally charging it at home is the cost equivalent of gassing up a 100+mpg car.
