How about we turn nuclear waste into batteries that charge themselves for 28,000 years? It's so obvious. Why didn't I think of that? It's not breaking news, but I think it is really going to happen and take over every kind of battery. Lithium is all the rage right now, as as are solid state batteries. But maybe all of that will soon be obsolete.
Take some decaying radioisotopes, scatter the released radiation into a single-crystal-nano-diamond to generate charges that are collected and stored in something more like a super capacitor. The layers of diamonds also prevent any significant radiation leakage.
The Soviets did just that!

Making the nano diamonds is supposedly the most expensive part. Every other material is readily available. Are Soviet nano diamonds any good?
Nuclear batteries, I mean.

Space program. It has its benefits but it's horrifically space/weight/size inefficient.
