Spotted near Grünwald, looks like a civilian version of the Hummer H1. Why are there two fuel filler caps? Does this thing have two Diesel tanks? Also, are the tires flat on purpose? In another group I was told that the H1 - even the civilian version - could deflate and inflate its own tires via an onboard air-pumping system.

There's two tanks.

And yes, that's what the "CTIS" on the hub means (central tire inflation system)- which like most such systems, leaks. So when you let it sit parked more than a week or so, that's what the tires do.

What's the point of that, though? I mean why do you want to deflate the tires if you let it sit around for a few days or a week or two?

Yes.

Its not intended; its just what happens. The seals get worn and they leak.

The bigger trucks though; the LMTVs, M35A2s, and the HEMTT all seem to take an hour or so- a lot of private owners end up bypassing the inflation systems because of it.

Yeah and the military versions have really annoying loud "BEEEEEEEP" horn which stays on until the tires get up to proper inflation.

I wonder how much they negatively affect gas mileage! :lol:

Could the military H1 also run on Kerosone and JP-8 aside from regular Diesel?

No, it was just a normal old GM 6.2 diesel, not a multifuel engine.

The US military has pretty much abandoned multifuel engines

I remember how multi-fuel engines were basically a requirement of NATO tanks and the only country which really tried to build one was the UK with the Leyland L60 - and it didn't run well on Diesel or on other fuels. This engine found its way into the Chieftain main battle tank and was a reliability nightmare.

I've always wanted to swap a 572 big block Chevy into an H1.
