Anyone look into getting a Grom?

Thats an expensive toy

I'd rather just get a bicycle for like 1/5th the cost

But then you have to pedal.

And Groms are way faster than bikes, even if they're also way slower than larger motorcycles.

Bikes in general are expensive toys

But yes a Grom is expensive considering it's not a very versatile toy

I'd rather just walk than ride a bicycle if I can't afford a Grom

Grom is expensive for what you get. For $4k I'd rather get a used DR650 or KLR650, and have a better street bike and something that can go offroad.

Hardly a comparable bike to a Grom, I'd never touch a bike that high for running errands in the city in traffic. I ain't 6'4

Grom is only 3K but still.... thats a lot of money for a fucking Grom

Used vs new comparison usually isnt fair but I got my bike with 250 miles on it for 3K. 3K gets you a boatload of motorcycle

Grom is closer to $4K OTD.

I agree used vs new isn't a good comparison, but in this case you're paying a crap ton for a toy.

Sucks to be short.

Point is, that much money buys you a lot more bike. Or I'd save like $2k and buy a CSC bike.

Where are you finding $4k DRs?

Only dual sports under $4k I ever see are 200s. 450s and 650s are $5-6k. :rage:

Groms are weird. Sat on one at the powersports shop.  Pricey for 125cc.  I'd almost rather have a 125cc moped that has a more comfortable riding position and storage containers.

280Z Turbo

I watching a youtube video of a top speed run on a Grom. Holy shit it's slow. My 250 can outrun traffic at all legal speeds. The poor Grom is laboring just to get up to 60 mph. Even on a 55 mph country road, the Grom wouldn't really be enough. 70+ mph interstates: fugetaboutit.

MX793

Groms, like some/many scooters, are actually prohibited from being used on interstates because they can't do 65 mph.  Top speed is somewhere between 50 and 55 mph.

They also need to be 150cc and up to legally use the highway.

Which brings up the question, if you throw a 181cc big bore kit on there, does that make it legal?

Michigan says 125cc is minimum for the expressway, but the law also says 55 mph is the minimum speed. The Grom can get over 60, but I'm not sure it could hold it.

Probably not, since the authority issuing the registration/tags needs to recognize it and I don't know of any DMVs that keep tabs on vehicle modifications.

But does that really matter? The license plate is the same, right? If you get pulled over, just be nice and tell the cop it's been modded to 181cc.

If you can keep up with traffic and have a valid motorcycle plate, nobody will give a damn.

I'm not sure if the plates are necessarily the same.  Never paid attention to any of the scooters I've seen to notice if either the plates or the registration stickers are different from bikes.  Might vary by state.  Registration fees on scooters (or sub 150cc machines) may be lower, too, which leads me to think there's some kind of designation that could be identified on the plate.  Either way, cop isn't going to care if you put a big-bore kit in it, if it's registered as a scooter and you're riding it on the interstate and he/she isn't feeling generous, you'll be getting a ticket.

That's essentially what it is.

Honda Shadow 600s had 4 speed gearboxes.

When I used to moped alllll the time, I eventually made it a point to wave or give a beep-beep to dudes on Harleys and stuff.  People on Harleys just never look like they're having any fun.  They're always straight-faced, trying to look badass.

As far as the Grom is concerned, though...realistically it's probably a blast to ride.  Kinda like a moped, you can push it to the limit virtually all the time and not get into trouble.

The condition you're describing is called Cruiser Face, and it's no laughing matter.

Well, being able to reach and maintain the speed limit is important for fun, comfort and safety. I like that I can go WOT on the Ninja without popping a wheelie, but the Grom takes it too far.

I don't know how people can ride without a full face helmet. Some rides end with my visor having 100 bugs on it, some of which are very obvious when they hit. I don't want all that hitting me straight in the face, no thank you.
