More usable scenarios for most people:

Tailgating!  You could throw a 40" tv in the front trunk and plug it in

I think the outboard lights are pretty cool too.  It lights up everything around the truck, and you don't have to worry about it killing your battery or turning on your engine to recharge.  It wouldn't make a dent in a battery the size the Lightning has.  Would be really useful if you're camping somewhere or out at a bonfire or something.

Kind of minor things, but not totally useless by any means.  I like the idea too of the "work surface".  You can go sit in your truck and work out of it, keep the AC on, etc, and not have to run a gas engine.  It's like a bad mobile office.  You can eat lunch in the parking lot like a total loaner in comfort.

I often end up sitting in the Tesla with the AC on while my kids are at activities. It's nice not to have to run an engine for that.

Morris Minor

As things stand, I'd only buy a non-Tesla EV for local duties, nothing that includes journeys requiring use of public charging.

Base price: $93k for that model, or base base price of $77k.

Though, to be fair, though an economic clown show, at least it doesn't look like a clown show (aka, EV Silverado, Rivian, Tesla).

Mazda has sold 316 MX-30s YTD in North America. Not sure why they bothered with this one. It would be a lot less work to stand on a street corner and hand out wads of $100 bills.

Apparently a local Kia dealer is taking orders for EV6s at MSRP?  Need to call to figure out what the deposit, trade-in, lead time, etc is for ordering.  I saw one this weekend at a party I was at.  What a cool looking car.

$1000 down, 3-6 month wait, MSRP locked in.  They won't commit to trade in on the Outback.

If gas stays at $4/gallon, I break even on the deal in 5 years.  If gas stays closer to $5/gallon, I break even in 4 years.  And that's not even considering the difference in residual values (ie Outback is going to depreciate more during that time than EV6 probably?  Who knows).

Used car market is wild.

EVs also appeal on our emotional nerdy cool-to-have level: it's not all dollars & cents.

My brother-in-law just got a Leaf. He's an aerospace engineer & loves it for geeking purposes. His wife is uninterested in cars but likes it too because its perfect for sitting in stop-start traffic in the Chicago suburbs.

Yeah, there's definitely a nerdy bleeding edge feel to it too.

It's hard to wrap my head around a $55k car, in addition to the $30k car I just ordered.

But then you factor in the lack of depreciation (in the case of the Outback), or appreciation (with the S2000), the $7500 EV credit, high gas prices...I can talk myself into it financially.

Still seems like a lot though.

You think the market is crazy now, watch what happens in a couple years. Eventually things have to swing towards "normal" but inevitably will swing too far the other way for a bit.?

I think 2021 & 2022 model years will have a lower # of total cars across the board, so unless manufacturers boost production for 2023/2024 to make up for it, I'm not sure how much it will swing the other way and give us cheap cars. I think manufacturers will just go back to normal production numbers to avoid having their lots get overfilled. But maybe some companies like Chrysler/RAM/Jeep/Dodge will end up doing that.

There's a used EV6 with 1,800 miles on it 30 minutes further south from the office listed for $73k :wtf:.  Probably going to swing by there tomorrow afternoon to at least sit in it and see if I can get a test drive.

If all goes well, I'll go order one on Saturday at my dealer

Gas station / EV charging stop in Denmark. Price sign shows charging price per kWh and the number of chargers open. Charging spots look similar to a gas station.

Hope to see those stateside soon enough, instead of a single charger with a broken screen in front of a Walgreens.
Those pull-throughs would be great for EVs towing trailers.
