Title: Bad Habits You Have When Driving
Post by: 2o6 on January 29, 2011, 09:13:08 PM
Anything in particular?

I have a bad habit of speeding, (of course), but sometimes I have a bad habit of trying to get home before a song ends, so I end up flying.

Speeding, if you can consider that a bad habit.

Other than that, not a lot.  I'm a pretty careful and considerate driver.  I signal lane changes, don't block the left lane, etc.

I think I follow a bit close sometimes, when I want to go faster and there is a blocked passing lane, especially.

I'm a compulsive speeder, and I'm heavy on the horn.

Turns without signaling, especially right turns. And especially especially on right turns if there's no cars ahead of me and I don't have to stop to see if there's a car coming. If it's just slow down and turn, I'd say well more than half the time I turn without signaling.

I'm not sure speeding is a habit. It's not like I'm not aware that I'm doing it. I make the conscious decision to speed

Me too, but I'd still say it's a habit.  I feel as if something's terribly wrong if I'm not going 20 mph over the speed limit on a highway.

I do this on occasion, but I try not to.  I'm more likely to do it if there's only one car blocking the passing lane.  If it's a whole line of cars, I don't even bother.

That's just Atlanta. Note that I've never gotten a ticket in Atlanta. They've all been in small towns.

I have been using my horn a lot lately, I think drivers have gotten more stupid lately too.

On a somewhat related topic, is it considered vandalism to put a bumper sticker on someone else's car without their permission? I've been seriously thinking about getting some of these.

I have a bad habit of getting overly mad when I see people texting at the wheel. It's horrible to see but there's nothing I can do about it so there's no need to get mad about it.

Oh, and my favorite TSX steering wheel position blocks the high beam indicator. I melted people's retinas for at least fifteen minutes last night before I shifted my position and saw the blue light on the dash. I'm just not used to xenon light output, I suppose.

I think nothing of passing on the right when somebody won't move over from the left lanes.  A friend of mine hates this and yells at me every time I do it when she's in the car.  She has a point, it is dangerous, but I give ample opportunity for said left-lane bonehead to move over prior to moving right and blasting by myself.

:hesaid:

As unsafe as it may be I think it's better for all parties involved. I'm sure the person I'm stuck behind doesn't want me riding their bumper, I get exasperated and noticeably frustrated when I'm stuck behind someone: if they don't move out of the way I might as well go around them.

I also speed and often don't signal a lane change until I'm beginning the change (i.e. I'm not signalling my intent, just moving over while signalling...). The latter manoeuvre is usually pulled when I've already checked my mirror and blindspot, so I've never actually come close to hitting anyone, but it's something I actively avoid doing now.

I'm also a very sloppy parker. :tounge:

Yeah, that's how it starts...

Really, it started on my commute, where I drive through downtown, which is a series of two to three lane one-ways with a speed limit of 30 and lights timed to match. Most idiots go about 20 to 25, which means that they have to stop at at least one light.

I accelerate really fast all the time. Not even speeding, I just get up to speed quick. The faster a car is, the faster I get up to speed.  Explains my shitty gas mileage.

That's great if there's room on the right to move over, but a lot of times there a line of idiots going slower in the next lane over. I suppose it's just one of the downsides of living in a major city.

I don't see anything wrong with passing on the right if somebody insists on blocking the left lane.

Outside of the major cities, yeah, but I have to remind myself that slow for Atlanta isn't slow for other places - it's not rare for me to be going 75 in a 55, drive by a cop clocking people and not even slow down.

I have no bad driving habits, honestly.  Sometimes, people are alarmed at how close to cars I get that are parked on the street (like when cars are parked on both sides and I'm driving along and there's another car coming the other direction, so it's a tight fit), but I've never hit a parked car, and it isn't really a bad habit to be well-aware of my car's boundaries.

Ummm...I also drive "slow."  I'm always going at least 5MPH over the limit per the norm (10 over on the freeway if I feel the need to go that fast, I'm certainly not afraid to) but I don't accelerate fast or anything.  Dunno.  People are always very comfortable/confident in my driving from what I know, even if I do (or because of the fact that I) drive "slow."

I do the same, and I wouldn't consider it a bad habit as long as it's done carefully. It's even legal in Maryland.

I would be a horrible chauffeur. I don't drive very smoothly, I drive quickly. I don't really notice it since I'm holding onto the steering wheel, but passengers that aren't holding on to something notice it a bit more. I guess that's my bad habit.

I drive a bit fast, and am also bad about getting close behind someone if they're left lane camping. Other than that though, I'm not sure. I always use my signals and try not to tailgate or brake suddenly. Lack of patience (and how it's demonstrated through my driving) is probably my biggest vice.

I think it's more of a small town/retiree thing (having been around plenty, I feel justified saying that). In cities and on the interstate people still speed a decent amount. I like to speed and am rarely the only one (or even the fastest one). State highways drive me nuts though... one small town after another with 35mph speed limits and plentiful farm pickups or dump trucks/semis to slow things down... Louisiana also frustrated me, barely anyone speeds much there (apparently they have strict speed limit tolerances by police) on the interstate.

I intentionally make sure that my steering wheel blocks that blue light. Annoys the heck out of me.

Worse is on my parent's SX4 - there are always at least 3-4 dash light on at one time - headlights on, cruise on, cruse set, awd on, etc. And they're so bright.

Hmmm.... let's see... from a perspective of the PoPo or senior citizens I

#1 I take corners fast.. intersection type corners, and then I'm hard on the gas after..  I imagine some giving me dirty looks after, oh well
#2 If I'm on a 2 lane and I'm coming up behind someone stopped at the light in my lane, but the other is empty, I'll move over to the empty one, because I know I'm going to blast off at the light... if there is someone coming up in the open lane car lengths back, I'm sure they are pissed when I pull over into their lane taking their open lane launch
#3  If I'm on an on ramp and have a car in front of me, I'll hang behind and do a ridiculously slow speed so I can take some of the ramp at a fun speed and be at merging speed on the highway.  I'm sure it pisses the cars off behind me.
#4 Sometimes if I'm on the highway and there's a guy not using cruise control and not keeping their speed, and I have to pass them a few times, I'll speed up, pull in front of them and then go really slow, to see if I can annoy them too.  Probably the most stupid/childish thing I do.

Atlanta is pretty ridiculous. I once was going 90 in a 55 and was still with the flow of traffic (towards the upper end admittedly).

I am not so good with stop signs..the stopping bit is difficult for me...

I really don't speed too bad. I pretty much just stick with the flow of traffic, and normally that means ~5 mph over. I always signal and almost always check over my shoulder before changing lanes. I don't text while driving (illegal in NC!!!! Though I always see people doing it, and it pisses me off), and I avoid the phone in general as much as possible. I do pass on the right sometimes, but typically only in light traffic situations.

I used to do that, but now I make a conscious effort to keep my left foot on the dead pedal and my right foot near the pedals (there's a little bump on the "transmission tunnel" that facilitates this).

I roll through stop signs in my neighborhood when I can see no cars coming, especially the bullshit signs the city added last summer that serve no purpose whatsoever except to make through-traffic drive slower down our hill. Those I run on principle alone.

I never even realize I do it, but I have at least been able to get my mind to put my brake foot in front now.  Or most of the time.

It is a terribly dangerous thing to do and I have no idea how or when I started doing it even.

On your first where you follow; Follow too closely, 2 point moving violation and probably in the $110 fine neighborhood in Michigan.

On the other; if you put it on and no requirement other than the owner pulling it off it is Criminal Mischief.

If you put it on and it requires any professional repair where you have to pay its Malicious destruction of private property.

Does that also apply to messages written in dirt/salt of a car? I got one criticizing my parking when the car on my other side had forced me over to the edge of the space.

Suppose you might be able to charge for it if you reeeeeally wanted to get "creative" with the law, but I can't imagine ever being convicted of it. I really doubt that would even be consider "defacing" since it's dirt/salt. If somebody came to me and tried to get me to file it, I'd roll my eyes and politely tell them to go the fuck away.

Passing on the right. - Too many left lane campers here, so I simply must do it in order to get anywhere around here.
I brake a little heavy at times. Mostly in the winter.
I take cloverleaf ramps at entertaining speeds.

I don't speed much anymore. I used to when I was younger. I was pretty bad actually. Now I find myself going over on the highway, but that's about it. Speeding gets you nowhere in my city. Too many red lights, cameras, vehicle cameras...etc. Expensive and pointless when you'll either be fined or you just have to stop every 3-400 ft anyway.

He clocked me at 52 in a 35, but I was definitely around 60 until I saw him and got on the brakes hard. It was a twisty canyon road, and he just appeared out of nowhere.

I live for the sin bin! Haha

I want to get in the sin bin next time I go to the F1.  I need to improve my driving skills to reach that goal.

I'm sometimes more concerned with my MP3 player (attached to the head unit via a cord) than with keeping my eyes on the road. That's probably my worst habit.

Passing on the right. - Too many left lane campers here, so I simply must do it in order to get anywhere around here.
I take cloverleaf ramps at entertaining speeds.

I don't speed much anymore. I used to when I was younger. I was pretty bad actually. Now I find myself going over on the highway, but that's about it.
I'm just like this.

Carrying what could be deemed as overzealous speed into corners.
Last Thursday I ghost-doriftoed a wide 45mph left hander almost right up into the ass of a 240SX (I thought I was just going to go left fast but I realized halfway through my rear end had come loose without making a noise). I blamed the slippery-ass white marker paint and the downhill offcamberness but I really should just disconnect my rear bar...

Hah, last month I totally spun around on a corner.  Except that was because I was doing 45 in a 25mph corner... :mask:

Lucky it's a lightly-traveled section of road, mainly because it allowed me to split before anybody saw me.  Also put the fear in me again.

My car has a nice grip-to-light-ass ratio that usually means an ungraceful but quick reverse-snap-oversteer where the tires grab back on once they slow down enough.

With the new sway bars the car is easier to control with the throttle.  Generally it's opposite to your car though; applying throttle creates more under-steer or keeps it neutral if I came in too hot.  There are limits of course... If I bomb in off the throttle the back end will eventually come around.  Honestly though I am not a good enough driver to exploit those limits, so since then I haven't done that.  But in everyday driving and cornering in the twisties it is much more fun to drive than before.

I got out around 1PM every day for my last semester of high school. They call it minimum day. We had 7 periods per day: 6 classes and a lunch. If you could fulfill your graduation requirements with only 5 classes, they'd schedule them in the first five periods with your lunch as the 6th (normally lunch was either 3rd, 4th, or 5th) so you could leave early.

High school is such a racket.  My senior year, I got out at 2:30 or so 2 days a week, 1:30 two other days, and 12:00 one day.  Man, I'd love to have that schedule again.  I didn't appreciate it as much as I should have at the time.

I'm never running late. I get up at 5 for a "bible study" class at 6 at a church member's house. That ends at 6:50 so I have 50 minutes until classes start. School doors open at 7 and I usually take my time so I don't have to sit in the commons for 25 minutes until the hallways open up and I can go to my locker. Sometimes I just go home for 20 minutes and grab a drink or surf teh interbutts before leaving for school.

Wow man, you're up early.  I was always running late in high school.  A coiple of years, I had cool homeroom teachers who liked me and let me slide on it.  But then I started getting in trouble for it so I was more careful after that since that few minutes more of sleep wasn't worth getting kept after until late in the afyernoon.

I would be a horrible chauffeur. I don't drive very smoothly, I drive quickly. I don't really notice it since I'm holding onto the steering wheel, but passengers that aren't holding on to something notice it a bit more. I guess that's my bad habit.

I get accused of being a speedracer- I try to take corners as fast as possible without braking. (to save gas, right? )
One time at Warrant Officer school I cooked into the dirt/ gravel parking lot and got totally sideways (30mph speedlimit strictly enforced) with a lot of classmates standing around so that only reinforced the image..

I grew up driving in 20mph Evanston, Wyoming. But driving in Germany I got tired of people cutting me off so started tailgating like everyone else.

So sometimes I'm laid back behind the wheel and will be overly courteous to everyone (yeah we all hate being behind THAT GUY) but other times I cut through traffic like a rock tossed into the ocean..

I generally ignore Stop signs unless it's unsafe to do so or it's under surveillance.
Changing music or podcasts on my iPhone.
Speeding
I've been caught daydreaming once or twice - almost rear ending stopped cars. One time I honestly thought I was going to hit - came within inches - stood on the brake pedal like I was trying to break it off - ABS chattering all the way - heart pounding. My driving was dramatically better after that, for a few weeks anyway.

I've had this happen once or twice.  Nothing like threshold braking (no ABS for me) to get the old ticker pumping.  And yes, such an event usually puts me on my best behavior for the next few weeks too.

When I have to stop suddenly, like in a highway traffic jam, I always stop a bit before the car in front of me, to leave me some room to move if a car behind me doesn't stop in time.

If my copilot is being annoying, I'll tend to drive in a manner that will upset them; excessive speed or slaloming. If we're on the west side of the Hudson, it's pretty much a given that we'll be going down Bear Mountain and all its twists and turns.

I prefer to drive on the left side because od entrance ramps,  as long as I'm actually passing.  I'd say I typically go faster than about 80% if the cars on the highway, so left is the natural side for me.  Byt I don't hog the left lane.  If I'm not passing or somebody wants to go faster, I move over.

But if the lanr is blocked, I pass on the right.  I make no apologies for it.

Hey, I had just bought the Suburban and hadn't quite tuned myself up to it's dynamic - or un-dynamic - response.  Toss in my 2 sons and Greg's son, and I felt that I should drive like a responsible yet girly man. Don't worry, all that changed a couple weeks later once I learned what to expect from the 3 ton beast and how far I could push it.
