The worst is "oh-ten," "oh-eleven" -- I hear it way too often from car salesmen.
I think I switch between the two, depending on what I'm talking about but I say "twenty-ten" the majority of the time.
And speaking of ways to say it; there was a local commercial a while ago for a fitness club and the guy said "memberships just $99 'til the end of two-ten." TWO TEN. What the FUCK? Bugged the shit out of me.
I say "twenty ten" or "oh ten".

When I was a kid learnin' French, I could never get around the way they, the Frogs, expressed the year: 1999 = Mille neuf cent quatre vingt dix-neuf.
By the time you'd got that lot out, the year had moved on & you had to start all over again.

Chinese is great:
Two, Ten, Five = 25
Four, Thousand, Two, Hundred, One = 4201
It's all roses until you start dealing with increments of ten thousand, then that gets tricky.

True... though it's quite easy at present: maintenant il est l'annee deux mille dix!
All this 4 x 20, 10 + 9 stuff is resolved in the Swiss Romande......... they have settante, huitante and nonante as 70, 80 and 90 respectively.
Mind you. have you tried saying some of those iconic Ferrari cars in Italian? .......... cinquecento novantanove or even quattrocento cinquantaotto don't quite trip off the tongue!

that's probably why Europeans (or at least Top Gear presenters) just say the numbers individually ("five nine nine" and "four five eight")

I usually say them that way as well. Notable exceptions being the 911 and 612 (which I say both as six-one-two and six-twelve, probably more often as six-twelve). Oh, and 550. But 575 I always said five-seven-five.

this is why I've adopted the "twenty x" terminology this year rather than later on. I don't want to still be stuck in that habit in 2027.

If you think about it, twenty-ten sounds more correct. Everyone said "nineteen ninety-nine", not "one thousand nine hundred ninety-nine".

We only said it like that because of Prince. If not then I'd said it the other way.
I say "oh-ten". It's a car biz thing. We shorten words whenever we can. Like tranny or plugs or u-joint or a/c or- well, you get the idea.

it's pretty apparent to me that "oh ten" is a carryover from the 00-09 decade when we all said "oh seven" "oh eight" and "oh nine"

"oh-ten" is clearly understood as a year, whereas "ten" could refer to other things. :lol:

if I don't feel like pronouncing the extra syllables for "transmission", I try to use the word "gearbox" instead of "tranny". Because apparently, some people think that "tranny fluid" is something you catch from a transsexual hooker.

Just sounds better. By 2020 I'll start saying "twenty" since that sounds better.

Well back when it was one thousand nine hundred ninety-nine, many were terrified by the forthcoming millennium disaster, & it was a huge relief for them to get through it with only moderate carnage. So I suppose I understand why, even 10 years later, many still celebrate the second millenium by spelling it out every time: "Two Thousand Ten." The British are lucky that common parlance there requires a conjunction: "Two Thousand and Ten" ... just rolls off the tongue.
Two Thousand and Ten is the way I say it.
