Title: Bought a car
Post by: FlatBlackCaddy on November 20, 2005, 03:52:17 PM
Hey all, been awhile since i've visited, i've been busy with a new job so i'm finally getting more internet time.

Just thought i'd drop a line. I just got back from making a deal on a car.

If any of you remember i was going to buy a new 350Z but after some thought(Nissan is going to do a drastic more porsche like redesign of the 350 in the coming years, so i didn't want a new one, and i didn't want to wait a couple years to get a fun sports car) i decided to revert back to a previous dream.

Well after a couple weeks of looking i found a nice car with everything i want.

I just purchased(picking up tuesday, picks soon to follow) a 1996 low mileage second owner Black on Black TT Z car. Its very clean and is basically show room quality. The price was pretty fair(market value) and these things are getting pretty slim when it comes to selection.

Truthfully i'll be just as happy with the Z32 as a new 350(mmmm those turbos building boost).

I'll detail it real nice and take some picks for you guys.

cut me some slack run away, i'm excited.

I don't plan on modding it(its unmodded at this time, completely stock).

All i plan to do(possibly in the future) is a stillen intake/exhause and chip. Stillen has dyno tuned that package to 400 crank HP. More than enough for me.

I always liked the v6 turbo setup of the Z's.

Each bank is independant. Each having its own turbo/intercooler and throttle body.

He thinks he can go faster for cheaper than upgrading his twins.

Here's the only pics i can find of his, I'm pretty sure it's changed since. These were taken when the car was still in japan.

For non-Z-car folk:
S30: 70-78 cars
S130: 79-83
Z31: 84-89
Z32: 90-96
Z33: 03-?

Congrats on the Z32TT! I've always like the Z32. It's a bit too big for my tastes, but they are amazing performers with highly potent engines that can approach 1000 hp! The design is timeless and it could almost pass for a new car today, IMO.

Good luck doing any mods on those! The engine bay is so tight!

BTW, The later 94-96 models look a little nicer than the earlier models, IMO. The front end is more smoothed out.

The sequential twin setups in the RX-7 and Supra were complicated and in the case of the RX, sometimes prone to problems when you start modifying the car.  I can understand opting for a single turbo in that case.  The plumbing in those was pretty easy to go to a single turbo.  When you have two cylinder banks, it makes sense to have a turbo for each especially if that's how the car comes from the factory.  The plumbing changes for such a modification would seem like a headache to me.  Of course, it's cheaper to upgrade when you only have one turbo to work with.

I think Z32s will be classics some day.

The sound of a Z32, is muscular, but not very distinctive, IMO. Although they sound much better than Z31s.

My car looks exactly(same wing) like the one secret posted(except black).

While the weight of the car is high, it handles the weight very well. Its my favorite Z car of all time, a dream come true for me.

Edit: the car also comes with a set of TSW(?) 17's shod in eagle F1 supercar tires.

my reason for doing this is to disprove all that non-sense.

besides, i'm not even going to touch the internals of my engine and make the same if not more than he was. he went all out on that engine and only made 620? definately something wrong. Have you looked up the cost of the turbo upgrade for the tt? 3500US! just for the turbos! lol, i paid that much for my turbo, front mount, downpipe and midpipe! as far as cost goes, i'll spend less than the tt guys and have a workable engine bay afterwards

but only time will tell i supose....

Sean, what basis do you have to say that it will be laggy? It's a T66 Ball bearing turbo. Get out your compressor maps and tell me why it won't be as effective as twins.

Larger turbo = greater rotational inertia = longer spool time.  That is, in fact, why the twin turbo Supra came with sequential twin turbos instead of one larger one from the factory.  Of course, from a tuning point of view it gets costly to upgrade two turbos, thus most guys ditch the sequential twins for a single large turbo.  You can also get rid of some plumbing that way, at least with sequential turbos.

The fact that it's a ball-bearing turbo cuts down on spool time. With modern technology, a well-chosen single turbo will make full boost just as fast as a pair of twins.
In his case, most people keep the twin turbos.

Pick up Sport Compact Car's Engine and Driveline Handbook, it explains everything quite well. I'll go copy a few paragraphs.

And a pair of smaller ball bearing turbos will spool faster than a single large ball bearing turbo.  Also, in the case of a V engine, you can run a true dual exhaust if you keep twin turbos.  If you go to a single, you need to combine the exhaust from both banks to route it through the single turbine.

"Most people think that turbo lag is solely due to the inertia of a turbo's ratating parts, but lag is caused by a combination of insufficient gas flow at low rpm, inertia, and and mechanical losses. Insufficient gas flow however, is the biggest contributor to lag."

"With modern turbos, huge advances in compressor and turbine aerodynamics have resulted in greatly improved efficiency. New, computerized design techniques have benn used to optimize wheel mass and reduce lag-producing inertia. These design improvementshave largely overcome the lag problems in the last few years. Other recent innovations such as ball bearing center sections, lightweight compressors and turbine wheels have been used to reduce lag."

The factory turbos I'm almost positive arn't the ball-bearing type.

Yes two small ball-bearing turbos will spool faster than a big single ball bearing turbo, assuming both are the proper size.
However Seans said "I'm sure it will be really laggy   " and I'm telling him, no it shouldn't be.
So his decision to go with a modern single turbo will probably result in lag very close to stock levels, while making much more power and costing less than two new modern turbos.

Anyway, it's kinda like swapping a SR20DET into an S30 Z. Yes, it makes more power, but it's just not the same.

The Z32 is supposed to be a TT!

I found one now(was tired of waiting, i've wanted one for years) and decided to buy it even though it was winter. They are slim pickings in the summer but in late august about 5 popped up in my area, and only one with the year/mileage/color combo i wanted, so i jumped on it.

I have room for it so storing it is no problem for me.

2+2's don't come in turbo form.

Mine is a 2 seat turbo model, and i think all Z's came with T-Tops(or like 98%).

Personally i don't like the T-Tops, i never use them and they are more prone to rust(due to the drains coming out in the wheel well and the tendancy to trap dirt in the drains lines).

However with any good Z you don't have to worry about that, good meaning well cared for garaged Z's. Most people wont even drive them in the rain(SOME traction issues in rain :D ). This one is pretty much spotless.

For a 15 year old design it does still stand out to this day.

In my short trip home i had a few stares. Even more second looks.

I know many would disagree but i like this style better than the 350's(which was what i was going to get).

I'm more of a 80's / 90's smooth and sleek sports car fan, the 350 is a rather bulbous(sp?) design. Not bad(in black) but not as stunning as the 90's Z's when they hit the streets(imo).

Oh come on, can't you put like a half inch of wax on it and get some hooey dooeys with some studded tires?
