Title: I miss having a nice old car.

So been entering year 1931 to 1972 in the local Craigslist to just see what comes up. Really liking this El Camino

I don't think I lust about any old car really. I'll just hang on to the E46. Classics hold no appeal to me. Even an E30 M3. I drove one on mountain roads. Yeah, nice. But old and relatively meh (given the hype).

Sold my '66 beetle over a year ago and now want another vehicle of some kind. The utility of the El Camino would be nice, plus you can buy damn near anything for these old GM cars these days.
If you could get the '69 for around 3k, then dump another 3k into cosmetics, it would sell for a tidy profit. I'd keep driving it till it got boring though.

If I had the time, money, tools, skills, and space, I'd love to do a resto-modded Ford Maverick.  Much like '65-'69 Mustangs, there's just something about them that I really like.  But much less common than 60s Mustangs, though.

I could see myself buying some old cars in the future. For instance, I have every intention of buying an AP2 S2000 when they're old, ditto an NSX when it's a classic.

If I HAD to get such a car I'd totally go for a big block late '60s/early '70s C-body 2-door sedan such as the Lebaron, Monaco, or Fury. Sure, they're about the size of a city bus but with a mild big block and 3.73 gears it's gonna move pretty good and do some serious burnouts. I totally doll it up in grandma livery and then go hunting for ricers ;).

'68 Monaco (not a fuselage style) but still nifty:  http://inlandempire.craigslist.org/cto/5050872948.html (http://inlandempire.craigslist.org/cto/5050872948.html)
'71 Fury but with a small block (and custom targa top!):  http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/cto/5032547354.html (http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/cto/5032547354.html)

Probably. It was a 15 min drive at about 6000ft above sea level. I did it with a friend back when I had just gotten the 1M. We went for a drive and swapped cars.

EVO did a great comparo with the E30 against some other modern heroes with similar specs (http://www.evo.co.uk/toyota/gt-86/14125/toyota-gt86-vs-renault-clio-cup-honda-integra-type-r-and-bmw-m3). One of my favorite articles. I still have the hardcopy by my bed. Anyways, they kind of called it comparable to an ITR and even said it was almost FWD in feel. In its era it was probably a beast but I can see why people are so so about it now. The game has def moved forward.

I still like old cars but with all the modern tech and tires we have now they are a lot of fun to update. You. get all the old smells and feedback with much higher grip and modern damping and bushing tuning. Win win.

There are some deals, but there's  a crap load of garbage to sift through. How about a 1963 Rambler American time capsule back to the Kennedy administration for $3500.?  Like this one:

Dude, that Volvo is rad. I think the engine parts are easy to find because it's basically the same engine they used for 30 years, but I would guess body and trim and stuff might be hard. There is a following, though, and surely they have some info that's better than me.

Hells yeah. Get a ~540 cubic inch stroker kit, good heads, a roller cam, and 3.73:1 limited slip, and one would have one helluva dreadnaught.
Title: Re: I miss having a nice old car.
Post by: Rupert on June 09, 2015, 09:23:11 PM
Pretty sure you could mount a turret, weld the bottom half watertight, and take on a dreadnought, actually. That thing might be a straight battleship. You'd need U.S.S. Missouri license plates.

"Does not stay on" = it starts but quits, way easier to figure out than a totally dead motor.

But I don't really get the appeal of Karmann Ghias at all.

Air cooled VW aficionados consider the Ghias as very desirable. Rust free, non wrecked examples are rare. The parts that make the car run are standard VW parts, not expensive. I've restored 3 Beetles and made money on all of them, plus I still have an engine stand and a box of parts.

A nicely designed and semi-hand built body with super reliable mechanicals.  Slow by today's standards, but the engine can be improved for minimal cost.  For me the only turnoff is the trademark air cooled VW flat 4 chirp.    I'd consider a convertible.

Apparently, looking at prices, a lot of people agree with that.

Yeah, tractor engines are cool I guess.
But it really needs to be rebuilt so it can make power over 3000 RPM. Then EFI. turbo, etc. Might as well put in a 2JZ, no shit.

I adore classic cars but I am no mechanic and I would hate to spend time finding and sourcing spare parts etc.

For me a nice "Youngtimer" (a car that's old but not too old) would be ideal. If I could I'd want a Mercedes-Benz S123 T-Modell, preferably a 230TE with a 4-speed Automatic.

Saw a beautiful little '62 Falcon Futura at the Auto Swap recently. Two door, 6 banger, auto trans, all OEM. OE dashpad and headliner. Looked like the type of car that daddy bought, sunk a shitload of cash in, and gave it to the daughter. Except it has manual steering, no A/C, and nowhere to plug in an Ipod in the radio (which was also OE).
$4500 asking- worth more, had a cracked exhaust manifold. Rust free CA car with black and yellow plates. Looked like this:

Been checking the local Craigslist for a good project. Also started checking out other Craigslists in other states. It seems that if you're looking for a vintage pickup., the ones in Utah are the best condition and price. Do they salt the roads in Utah? There was some debate about it among my coworkers. How about Idaho, salt?
This would be a $5K truck here:

Not too much salt used in the valleys - at least not compared to New England.

There's usually no salt, but some private parking lots or whatever may have salt. The mountains usually have sand instead.

I'm kicking myself for not buying it.

You should have bought it.  Robert McNamara would have given you a big hug.   ;)

Vegas/AZ is another great place to find clean old cars. The Trooper I picked up in Vegas had zero rust (which is a miracle).

This would be a $5K truck here:

https://saltlakecity.craigslist.org/cto/5578733355.html (https://saltlakecity.craigslist.org/cto/5578733355.html)

No salt in Idaho that I've seen, except maybe a rare parking lot. They use the blue ice melt and/or sand here.

To show graphic evidence of just how crazy I really am, I really want this! Look how clean it is! And the price is right. It would require going over the rockers with a magnet, though. Nice paint can hide problems.

In a few years, I'll probably end up getting an old project car.  Woman likes vintage stuff and really wants like a pickup from the 60's.  I'm starting to pay attention more to the older stuff on bring a trailer to get an idea of what's out there.

Many of these guys have grand plans of "putting in a bigger engine"(zoom, zoom) then realize the amount of work needed. You can only hope they haven't ripped it apart yet.

It's probably a crappy 351m smog motor. The 289 is better. Plus it's a Ford, not known for interchangeability.  ;)

Looks sweet.  Like straight out of Sanford and Son.  With a truck so old and weathered, aren't you afraid an axle will fail at speed from rust?  Just wondering.

That's sun rust, not northern tin worm. I'd bet the underside is in better shape rust wise than many 10 year old cars in the salt belt.

I don't know where you are, but here, we get rust in the roof and sometimes when there there's a leaking window or a body seam that fills with sand, but it's not much of an issue.
Title: Re: I miss having a nice old car.
Post by: shp4man on September 27, 2016, 10:04:33 AM
Went and checked out the truck last night- it's a bit rougher than the pictures show, weatherstrips gone in the doors, some surface rust in the floorboards. It would make a killer rat rod.
Like this:

So, that would require Bondo work (mine) a Maaco satin black paint job--$400, new wide white tires, $500, full moon hub caps, $325.
Plus, needs master cylinder and wheel cylinders, minor other shit, $250-$500.

I'm thinking about a $1500 offer. Guy probably won't take it, but whatever.

Edit: And a cool pin striping job! $200?

Advantages of white are that it literally is cooler (temp wise), hides dents better, and would look just as cool (the other kind) as black. Disadvantages are you can't buy touch up at the Walmart spraypaint area, and wouldn't want a white interior. Thinking about it.
Truck has those shitty modular wheels, but full moons would cover them nicely, and for cheap:

Couldn't really put it in the weeds without a dropped front axle--$500-600.  :frown:

Yeah, me too. The woman wants an old truck as a project car as some point. Basically, just something old to cruise around in. I'm ok doing a lot of mechanical work, but I don't want to deal with body work.
Title: Re: I miss having a nice old car.

The truck is kind of a weird deal. It actually belongs to the dealer I work at. They've had it for years as a maintenance crew vehicle, so it was mechanically maintained. We have a parking problem at work, so the general manager said to sell it.
Anyway, he said to come in Monday to do the paperwork. For $500. I'm really concerned one of my fellow employees will attempt to outbid me.
It has some rust from a leaking door seal in the passenger side, but is drivable and licensed. It's not as pretty as the white truck in the picture, but could be with a few more bucks.
Hopefully, the boss won't change his mind.

Picked it up and drove it home 22 miles through traffic. It overheated and the brakes are kinda iffy, but it made it! $500 worth of 51 year old truck. Some guy rolled down the window of his 2017 pathfinder and said "Never paint that truck dude!"

I love it. How is the wood in the bed?

My 66 is a C20 long bed fleetside with a white top over a lighter blue. Mine has a bit of rot on the front fenders and rocker panels. I really wish I had the time to restore it right now.

The bed wood is original- and rotten. These trucks all have rust in the lower front fenders because dirt accumulates in there and stays wet. This truck has some rust like that. Post a pic of your truck!

The old school solution was a product called Penetrol, which sealed the rust in and protected it, but didn't visually change anything. Eastwood now sells products specifically for automotive use that does the same.

A regular matte topcoat won't stick without a lot of prep.

I think I figured out why it's overheating- cranked it up last night and determined that after the thermostat opens, only the side tubes of the radiator get hot, the middle stays cool. Plugged. Hope to flush it, but if not, a new one costs $250 from Rockauto.
Also, an exhaust leak, plus the accelerator pump in the carb doesn't work, and about a thousand other little things. A little at a time, though.
I think I'm keeping that ammo box on the step, but the funky old thing in the bed has to go.

Don't screw around with flushing the radiator. Get it flowing again and all you'll find are leaks.

Awesome buy! I agree with the others to preserve the body but don't paint it. Get rid of that horrible back bumper, and whatever that is in the box. Keep the ammo box on the step though. Invest in the mechanicals... get it running good, and freshen up the interior a bit.

Confession? I kind of like the old funky step bumper. Have a big hammer to straighten it with!!

The steering box has about 7 inches of play in it- can't be adjusted out. Running with no lube around the ins and outs of a car dealership for 25 years will do that.  :muffin:

So this last weekend, did a gravity bleed on the the brakes and the pedal came back nice. Somebody let the brake fluid level go below the point of no return.
Took out the radiator and thermostat, flushed the rust out, but checked out the radiator passages with a mirror, still partially plugged.
Put in some DIY coolant flush stuff, if that doesn't work, have some nasty, toxic stuff from work to try.
Cleaned up the front bumper, luckily had some flat white spray paint leftover from another project.  :ohyeah:

A progress report:

After flushing out the radiator, I drove the old truck around for a few hours yesterday. The engine (230 or 3.8L)is surprisingly eager to climb hills. May be something to do with 3.73 rear end gears. ;)
Holy crap, the shocks are completely useless, and the rear stabilizer bushings are history also.
Here's the list so far:
Replace steering box.
Replace window regulators.
Rebuild carb/set timing to spec.
Replace all shocks and trashed bushings.
Replace cracked exhaust manifold.

I replaced the tailights and shot WD-40 into the turn signal switch area and got lucky, now have all lights working!

So far, have spent $650 on parts.

The truck makes such a cool sound when it's running, and I can't believe how many people like it, even with the "patina" paint job from God.

Getting there.

I think it actually means British barrel (36 gal) vs. US barrel (31.5).
Clearly it's meaningless when applied to carburetor holes, but maybe just out of habit the abbreviation carried over.

It steers nice and smooth now, it's even the same ratio as the OEM one. Thanks to Rockauto for sending the correct new replacement steering gear!
This old truck is ridiculously easy to work on compared to modern vehicles.
Yesterday, replaced the parking light lenses, drivers window regulator and lubed the door components. I was wondering why the door rattled so badly when you shut it. Well, it was because the old, broken regulator was down at the bottom of it, along with about 5 old rotten shop rags and a Hershey bar wrapper from about 1983.
If you've been working out and have large arms, you might have to ask a small person to reach down to the door bottom from the little hole.  :muffin:

The old truck is to the point now where it can be used as a daily driver. Just a few more things to do- exhaust repair (tailpipe/muffler), replace heater core, fix horn..
Gm built some tough parts- the blower motor was seized- took it out, lubed it and it works great- even the blower speeds still work. Amazing.
Wish I could afford a new steering wheel and horn switch/button. Maybe Santa?
Went to pick up the Christmas tree with it today and filled it with gas.

For horns, go to the nearest junkyard and grab some off a newer Chevy pickup. Dirt cheap and they're not as wimpy sounding as most of the classic horns. Me and my dad have them on the El Camino and Camaro.

Ol' Blue has become an enjoyable hobby. Probably driving it too much. The whine of the SM420 heavy duty 4-speed and the sound of the in-line 6 is music to me. Did some research on the head casting- it's a pre smog 1968 or 69 head, which is the best.
Behold the awesome and powerful 3rd generation GM inline 6!, now with an OEM air filter I got at the swapmeet for $10.  ;)

Got the drivers door resprayed today. Next is the dash. I've already done the glove box lid and ashtray. Need to remove the instrument cluster, restore it, and mask off the other shit. This will down the truck for a while. Guess I'm riding the Harley. My hair and clothes are full of metal flakes from overspray.

You can transport a firearm in California, but the ammo has to be in a separate compartment and it can't be concealed. I'm sure they'd find a reason to stop me if I made it a habit.

Put a new radiator in the old truck today. So the old Harrison original radiator was starting to leak at the top seam, it already had a bunch of other leaks, and the only thing keeping it going was a crapload of stopleak. So.. did a bunch of research. There are brass radiators available (likely Chinese, too), but $450 is above my Ramen eating price range.   I figured out the aluminum radiator that was available at Rockauto and other places was the same Chinese part, so ordered the cheapest one.
The part is listed as fitting a six, but in reality, it's a V8 radiator. Surprise.
After unpacking it, you can see the thing is fully half again bigger that the OE Harrison.
So I figured I would make it work. You have to completely remove all the old six banger shroud tin. 3 of 1/2 head bolts on each side 3 of 3/8 head bolts on the top.  The "U" shaped bottom radiator brackets are riveted on, and you have to grind the rivets off (not easy) to move them to the higher V8 position on the crossmember they mount on. Just used 5/16 bolts and nuts to re-attach them.
See the square holes? Those are the six banger radiator lower mount holes. Also had to get a new top radiator hose, as the old one was too short.
I used new rubber on the lower mounts and the OE rubber from the original six cylinder mounts on my "homemade" top bracket.
The advantage of this is nothing is butchered and the OE stuff could be bolted back in.
Also, there's room for an A/C condenser in front of the bigger radiator.

Now I can drive the truck uphill, in the desert at 112 degrees, no problem! Plus, if Mr. Six explodes, I may have enough cooling capacity for my dream engine, a big ass, premium guzzling, 375 horse 455 Olds! Zoom Zoom!

The Caddy motor is supposed to have some kind of special cylinder wall hardening process from what I hear.

It's not a forged wall, but a high nickel nodular iron used in the block and the heads. It takes forever to port the heads because it's harder than normal cast iron heads. It's also lighter than the Olds engine, more in the SBC weight class than the big blocks.

But the valvetrain is shit. You can't build them for big reve without spending serious coin, at which point it makes more sense to go with something more common.

And of the GM 455s - Pontiac, Olds, and Buick - in top factory form, were serious performers. Thing was, they, especially the last two, were extremely rare in top factory form,so they don't get the press. They weren't quite up to to the task of say a 426 Hemi, 440 Six Pack, 454 LS-6 or 427 Tri-Power, but they were close.

Not so sure. The Caddy's problem was severe limitation in the valve train (and hence, RPM). Yes, the 500 V8 at its peak enjoyed a rating of 400 hp and 550 lb-ft (the latter being the highest factory rating of the era) but it will never rev, so it is limited.

Of note, around here there's a silver first gen Camaro running around with a Caddy 500 V8. I saw it at a car show, and it froze me in my tracks, as I knew it wasn't a Chevy motor (as you probably know, all Chevy V8s have the distributor in the rear, and the Caddys have it in the front). I got the kuddos for the first person to recognize it as such.

IMO, stock for stock, it depends on the car.

The 340 Mopar was the hi-po LA small block so it was far smaller/lighter than the 383 B big block.

Stock for stock, IMO the 383 Magum did better in the bigger cars (Road Runner, Charger, etc.) and the 340 did better in the smaller cars (Dart, Duster, etc.). The two rarely were available in the same car - the Challenger/'Cuda and the third gen B-body ('71 - '74 Charger, Road Runner) AFAIK.

These (aftermarket) days, the 383 is essentially the same size/weight as the 440, so there is little impetus to ever spend time/money on it (much as the 396 Chevy) unless the goal is to preserve originality/numbers.

Yeah, there are a few that will still play with them and they'll show up in some weird places from time to time.

I did note the limitations later, and largely agree.
