Title: Best value for fun to drive and 4 doors
Post by: Rich on October 31, 2016, 07:20:29 AM
Thinking about it more and more I've got future 2nd car narrowed down to these.  I'll do some test driving when I get back to the US which should make the choice, much, much easier.  But since CarSpin likes to spend OPM, which do you think is the best value for a fun to drive 4 door?

My thoughts *I haven't driven any of these*:

GTI: Solid, great interior, great looks for a hatch, I think it'd be a good highway cruiser.  The downside I feel it'll feel a little boring and not so special going down the road - muted steering feedback, quiet, muted road feel through the seat.  VW electronics, too??

Mazda 3: Great interior, supposedly the most fun to drive in class, the steering should talk a little.  Downside is that it gets really pricey with options, Mazdas seem to rust pretty quick, and it might be buzzy.

Mazda 6: I feel it's about the same as the 3, but optioned similarly, they are about $1k in difference.  I think it looks better than the 3, too.  Downside is that it's bigger and may feel less playful.

Fiesta ST:  Steering feedback should be great, and have fun handling, is a nice small size.  The sounds and road feel it makes should invigorate.  The downsides are the interior ( looks gross, feels gross) and maybe too hyper for interstate hauls.

320i:  Gets really good fuel economy, 4 doors, RWD, with a stick on the cheap.  I like the interior with the sport package.  Downsides are that it's pricey, and wouldn't have a ton of power to make the RWD dynamics stand out.  Reliability is ??

ATS:  4 doors, RWD, with a stick on the cheap.  I think it looks great on the outside.  Not too keen on the gauges.  Pricey.  Reliability is ??

I'll spend most time scrutinizing the steering feedback in all of them.  From reading, all except for the ST have muted feedback with the EPS.

Are you planning on bringing the miata back with you?
Title: Re: Best value for fun to drive and 4 doors

Yep....

I could be cool with having the Miata as an only car... but I'll ship it right before I leave, and won't see it again for a couple of months.  I'd want/need a car to use in those 2 months to drive.  Renting for 2 months would be expensive... and having a 4 door would come in handy, and having something newer would be nice, too.

I've been checking the area for used cars (because I like money)... and wow, finding a newer-ish used 4 door with a stick is hard.

Are you able to keep the transportation fees if you sold your car there and rebought a miata over here?

How many miles is it at?  If i remember correctly, it had some rust too?

Keep the transportation fees?  If I don't ship it, I don't get the money.  Yeah, it's got some rust, but I'm pretty attached to it.  Still shifts like a champ and runs like a top.  I'll work to keep it for another 80k or so miles.

The thought of leasing came across my mind... I could easily keep the miles off since I'd have the Miata.  But if I get orders before the lease is up that'd be tricky.

Used 328i or if you want to buy new, a Focus ST.  Those are going for really cheap right now and are pretty good cars.

I'd take a Fiesta ST over a Focus ST every day of the week.

I'll do some research on CPO 3's w/ a stick

Fiestas are really small inside.  Just figured if you were getting a second car, you'd want something bigger and quite a bit different than the miata.

I know they look similar.. but to me the Focus looks hideous.  Plus it has a ton of power and weighs more and is still FWD so there'd be even more wheelspin.  I don't think it comes with an LSD either.

This is more about what you all would choose in this scenario.  Once I drive them all (and probably a bunch of other cars) I'll pick which one I enjoyed the most.

The Mazda3 and 6 are only special compared to other mainstream cars in their classes. Without Speed versions, they're nothing like the performance models on your list, GTI included.

Mazda3 was overrated. 3i drove EXACTLY like a Golf TSI hatchback with a lot less torque.

Peak small car is GTI. It's the 911 of the hot hatch segment. Get the "Sport" with the LSD and upgraded brakes (I wanna say it has adaptive suspension too).... good to go. It's not the most exciting thing but what in the segment really is? They're all compromised which is kind of the point.

I'm game, I haven't done any AutoX's in forever.  I plan on doing some road trips out to Road Atlanta, Roebling Road, CMP, and VIR to watch some racing/track days too.  Other spinners are welcome as well

Pretty much right on. The GTI is boring the way that the Miata and 911 are boring. They're obvious. But they're obvious because they're so good.

Of those cars the ATS is probably the most fun to drive, but I doubt you will easily find one with a stick and will probably be expensive. 320i would be next up but would also be expensive and less powerful and possibly less fun to drive.

Of the FWD cars I would be most interested in the Mazda 3 or GTI, but haven't driven them so can't say for sure.

GTI

But IMO if you really only need it for 2 months I would do either a monthly rental or even buy a beater and sell it after.  Monthly rental looks expensive on a monthly basis but is probably what I'd do (and way cheaper than buying a new car you only need for 2 mos).  Or depending on needs ride a bike and use Uber when you need a car until Miata gets there.

Sucks that they don't do super short term leases. Or maybe they do and it's eye wateringly expensive. I wouldn't mind trying something like a 911 or Corvette for a couple of weeks/months. I have no interest in owning such a car

Part of it is to have a 4 door to use when family is visiting/picking up friends/coworkers from the airport or whatever.  I think you rocked the C6 as an only car for a while, so you have some idea how handy extra seats can come in sometimes.

It's like the SUV/truck deal.  Most days out of the year it's just one person in the vehicle, but they have it for the occasional boat towing/cargo/whatever.

If its only a couple months this is not a bad idea. I did this during one of my relocations drove around in a V6 Mustang for a couple months. It wasn't "cheap" but the rental places offered hefty discounts the longer you kept the car.

C6 was my only car for about 3 years, I bought the 4Runner when I bought a house plus had a large dog (and later on a second one).  That said, I also comfortably paid cash for both and the 4Runner in particular was a pretty small % of both my income and my liquid savings at the time.  I'd say unless you're in a position to comfortably pay cash for this second car, don't even consider it (I don't think you said you're financing it I'm just sssuming that's a possibility given that's what most people do).

For things like friends getting a ride from the airport ... dude, Uber. Things like uber have made those occasional needs much much easier.  Have your family rent a car when in town, even offer to pay for it. Don't pay interest, insurance, maintenance, and eat depreciation all year round for something you need for 2 months and then only occasionally thereafter.

Another advantage of the monthly rental is it would give you an idea of just how often you use those additional seats.  If you find it's something you're unable to give up after the 2 months, then you could reconsider (or replace the Miata).

Not trying to rain on your parade, or turn another "what car should I buy?" thread into a carspin money advice thread. Just have to objectively consider, is the utility you'd get out of it really worth the costs?

The transaction costs of buying/selling a car alone make a full on purchase not worth it

Turo might have some thangs... rates seem reasonable

I checked out Turo to see what they had near Columbia, SC with a manual... a 2015 Corvette at $174/day. $10k for 2 months.  2014 Genesis Coupe at $64 a day- $4k f/ 2 months.

Hertz... 4Runner is $1044 for 2 months.  Chrysler 300 is $6,000 for 2 months.  who comes up with this shit?  Chevy Impala is $998

$772 for a Jetta or similar.  $690 for a Corolla

I'm picking up what you're putting down.  I didn't know about monthly rentals, I was figuring it'd be about $3,500 for a 2 month rental.  And buying a new car, my insurance would go from just about nothing to I'd guess $400 for 6 months.

And I'm thinking about buying a house, which would change the situation around buying a new/er car very much.    The rental houses are all about $1k per month there... but I could buy a 120k house, and have a 15yr payment of $500/mo.  Apartments are $700/800 (and I've been living in houses since 2012).  In this case I could only put about half down on a 20k car.

OTOH, my only car since 2012 was made in 1999.  As much as I dislike EPS, electronic throttles, thick A pillars, no spare tires, and e-brake buttons...I do miss having something newish.  Solid structure, no leaks, no creaks, no list of fixes/upgrades, room for work stuff/work people.  Having a less frenetic car when needing to make good time to NY would ease highway fatigue.

In your circumstance, I would get the nastiest, most raucous vehicle allowed on the street.  For me, that would be a Focus RS.  There's time enough for dash stroking and sniffing the interior after you no longer are allowed to make all your personal decisions.

Of course that is a good idea, but I have only seen zero of them on the street.
The MSRP is about $36K (almost exactly three Versas) but I wonder how much they are actually selling for. Are they in stock at dealerships, or must they be ordered?

Maybe things have changed in the past couple of months, but I've heard there's a long waiting list for the RS (months).  I've seen articles from a couple of months ago that Ford was cancelling orders from people who had ordered 2016s and told them they'd get a 2017 when MY17 production started up.

Focus RS seems raucous in a bad way. For example the suspension has been derided in every review I've read about it. A Focus ST with a chip, bro! and an exhaust is way more easily available and probably not down on fun factor if you never go to the track

A fiesta would still be a blast on the track

And today the Miata didn't start. I'm guessing the battery but who knows, maybe the alternator went bad.  I'll find out when I get back tonight (had to take the train).

Quote from: 12,000 RPM on November 05, 2016, 11:11:55 AM
Focus RS seems raucous in a bad way. For example the suspension has been derided in every review I've read about it. A Focus ST with a chip, bro! and an exhaust is way more easily available and probably not down on fun factor if you never go to the track
That's all beside the point.  The idea is to get something that's fun to drive; whatever his choice even if it's a Fiesta ST.  When you buy a car like that, who gives a shit about the interior, you get it because it's a blast to drive.  The only upgrade to an ST should be the Recaro seats.

Fiesta ST is too similar to the MX-5. I suggest Honda Odyssey.

Good point, but the Odyssey is still too similar to the MX-5. I suggest a Jeep Compass.

Since I looked into monthly rentals and realizing that yes, the $700ish price would be less than taxes on a new GTI or Mazda 3, I was and probably still am going to roll with that.

Recently I've been mysteriously losing coolant and oil at a slow rate.  (maybe .5qt of each per 500 miles).  No smoke, no stains/puddles when parked.  I don't think it's the head gasket; the oil is not like baby poo.  Has me thinking I'd like something newer also so I don't have any issues getting to work, and the ability to have something to drive if I need to tear down the Miata for a while.

I did a used car search for something less than 60,000 miles, less than $13K, Manual, newer than 2005.  Within 50 miles of Columbia the only ones to pop up were a 2016 Forte and some Focii (yuck).

The tracks in the area all require a roll bar for convertibles (which I won't do).  Has me thinking 2nd car.

GTI w/ performance pack is a little too rich for me. Thinking Fiesta ST or plain ole Fiesta.. Maybe a 3 or Golf

If I drove home it'd be a 1,800 mile round trip, but at about $100.  Flying is ~$300 (and stuck w/ family the whole time unless I rent a car there).  I plan on spending a lot of time at home since my dad is getting older and I just want to be around them more often.  I'd probably go 3-4 times per year.  Maybe more.  Still thinking about all this, open to opinions.

Fiesta ST. I'd say get a Versa that doesn't have a rod knock, but that's impossible.
Maybe VW has some good deals, though. You can get a little 1.4 turbo now in thr base model.

It looks like the 1.4T is for the base Jetta. Golf gets a 1.8T. The base Golf will still be near Fiesta ST money, unless they have some good deals.

I just did a cooling system pressure test and coolant was pouring out of the front of the engine at starting at about 5psi.  I'm guessing it's the water pump

fuuuuu

I went to the dealerships in Sevilla since I brought my car to the Mazda dealer to have the water pump replaced (only 60k on that shitty water pump, last replaced at 80k)

I sat in the Mazda 3 and 6 back to back.  The 3 feels just a tiny bit smaller and had an actual hand brake.  These interiors at their price points are fantastic

I spent a lot of time in/around the new Miata.  The door feels very far away from me.  The center console is super tiny (lol), the top is a dream, the shifter feels worse than mine, the seats have good bolstering, but the longitudinal contours don't feel comfortable to me.  They nailed everything else.  I can't bring myself to trade mine in on one since there are things about mine that I enjoy more (storage areas, seating position, seats (the biggest issue), and mine is set up perfectly for me now).

The new S90 would be my pick just for the interior I think.  Between that and an MB if I was getting a luxo shuttle.

There was an i8 at the BMW joint.  that door handle is terrible execution.  The buttresses look like parachutes to the wind.  But that car is sexy in an artful way.

1 series (and most of the BMW/MINIs) had the extendable thigh support.  DEAR GOD this is the best thing ever.  None had power seats so I had to sit reallllyyyyy far back to get the full support in which my left elbow was at the b pillar and could no longer use the armrest.  The shifter felt sloppier than the A3's.  Otherwise it felt nice.

3 series - it felt a little bigger than an E46 (not as much as I'd been reading), and fit like a glove as far as size/sightlines.  The interiors of the BMWs didn't feel as cheap as the mags/'spin make them out to be.

i3 - The interior was different.  I liked it, the way the controls were presented it was like they were floating, or "being presented" to you by the car.  Cool to see the carbon fiber on the door sill.

MINI - again, great seats, and the interiors felt just a little better in materials than VW/Mazda in construction.  Design is a little wonky.  Windshield feels 4 miles from me.

Nissan Leaf  LOL what a shit interior.  just a giant industrial size piece of vacuum formed hard plastic.

Golf R Line - usual Veedub stuff.  size felt spot on, everything felt super nice in the interior... but then I wondered what compromises had to be made to cut costs in other places to get the interior that nice for the price.

A3 sedan - man my god the steering wheel is a gift from the heavens.  So much negative space, so many good feels on it.  The vent rings feel cheap as hell though.  Plastic on plastic sliding as you turn them, just feels gritty/ not smooth and creamy like everything else.  The shifter felt soooo nice too, positive throws and much creamier than the ND Miata.

A4 - phenomenal interior.  It didn't feel substantially bigger than the A3

I have the Fucking fiesta as my rental while the Miata is down and out.  The Fucking Fiesta feels like a bar stool.  I sit a foot higher than the mid 2000's Mondeo.  I even sit higher than the damn Focii I drive by.  It's nice and quiet so I can fly on the highway in that thing at 160km/h/100mph.  The fucking Fiesta's interior is so much crap.  The Fucking Fiesta can land FA-18s on its dashboard.  The brakes are super grabby.  The shifter isn't bad but nothing to write home about.  I still can't get over how tall the seating position is.  I had to check 3 times to make sure that's as low as the seat could go.  It feels like I'm sitting down at a kitchen table for dinner.  Every single other car I'd sat in had a much more normal seating position/windshield relationship to driver/no barstool feel.

BUT MAN, IT'S SO NICE TO HAVE A CAR I DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT FALLING APART.

The Fiesta ST is out for good.  Pretty much down to a Mazda 3, 6, used BMW 3 (but then I'm back to the falling apart bit), maybe a Golf/GTI,

I need to check out Honda and Toyota too

A3 is auto only in the USA

Also if the Fiesta's seating position feels too high, you probably won't like any car in that class. I always thought the Fiesta's position felt low for it's size. Also, the Fiesta feels like a phonebooth and it's super narrow.

Infiniti G seems like a really obvious choice if you are not a pathological contrarian like me

My Z was dead reliable from 160-190K... a bone stock 6MT G will serve you well. An E90 328i is a good buy as well.

So has anyone suggested the new Civic hatchback Sport?  It's cheap, it's light, makes good power, available with a 6-speed, has gotten really good reviews so far.  It's supposed to drive really well while also being roomy and quiet on the highway.

MSRPs for like $22k.  It's a lot of car for the money.

I watched a review of a black one last night. Black hides the hideousness of it. The Sport model has a body color unibrow I think too. Which is better than the chrome unibrow.

Still not a fan of the turbo DI engines. And there's no volume knob if you get the touchscreen

This is for a car to go along with the Miata when you get back to the states, right?

If that's the case, I'd probably go with the Civic.  Either that, or I would try to find a lightly used Jalopnik special 320i with a stick.  You can get those for like $20k with barely any miles.

I wouldn't spend $40k on a car that's just a touch more fun than a car that's $25k, when you have a miata in the garage too.  Just isn't worth it IMO.

How?  STis have some of the best resale in the business.  Drive it for 3 years and sell it for more than $30K

But I don't think it's a good suggestion.  I still think you should go more luxury oriented.  How about a current gen IS350?

Edit just saw you want a manual.  So I guess ignore the Lexus suggestion.

I think I have narrowed this down some. In no particular order

1) Keep Miata as only car
2) trade Miata in on used ND
3) BMW 320 jalop special as second car
4) 2016+Mazda 3 as second car
5) Toyota 86 as second car
6) 2006-2009 Mustang GT as second car
