Title: Used tires?
Post by: 12,000 RPM on July 13, 2017, 10:33:54 AM
These cheapo Nexens are shit but I don't want to get a new set of tires as I want to do a square 19" setup next year. What tires are

- good in the dry
- good in the wet
- good at ~10-20 deg F weather?

MKX has AWD and if we get snow I doubt both of us would have to go in. Sounds like summer tires would be no go for cold weather, which we do get a few months of... should I just look for a used set of my trusty DWS06s?

Used tires scare the bejeezus out of me.  I had a coworker who was constantly picking up "deals" on Craigslist for used wheels and tires.  Several of them had latent or hidden defects (e.g.  broken belts) that weren't found until the tires were mounted and inflated.

Tires are the only thing between the car and the road.  They govern your ability to stop and turn.  Don't cheap out on iffy used stuff.

BFG comp 2 A/S

Just use the stock sizes. Will be 100x better than the Nexens, no need to go wide up front

Even I, who keeps his cars running with junkyard parts, has driven around with a ratchet strap holding on his gas tank, and has more than once said "well, they're just rear brakes," will steer clear of used tires.

Is this the car that already has unpredictable oversteer or something?

Only way I'd consider used tires is if I was buying a set from someone I knew well, like a family member or friend, and I knew the history of the tire.  Like if someone I knew had a set of snows with one season on them that he/she needed to get rid of because he sold the car they went to and had no use for them anymore, I'd consider that.  Otherwise, I lump used tires in the same bucket as buying used socks or underwear.

I once bought a used tire to use as the spare on my old Explorer.

I've only ever had used snow tires, and have put used tires on my truck multiple times.  You just have to know what you're looking for.

HOWEVER

If I were you I'd just buy new tires.  Those tires Alex mentioned (BFGOODRICH G-FORCE COMP-2 A/S) are $145/tire.  Buying used will save you what, $200?  To get tires with only half their life left on them to put on a car you daily drive?  You're paying the same amount for installation either way.  If you're short on cash then stay on these tires.

Bleh, I will just push up the new wheel purchase. By the time I get new tires installed I will have spent like $700-800. Then I have to spend that all over again with the new wheels. No thx

Keep the stock wheels and tires though.  Track days/autocross beckons.  And nothing beats rubber you can beat the snot out of that needs to be used up.
