Title: Nevada Highway Patrol Retires Last Crown Vic, Chargers And Explorers Now Favored

Sad day, folks. Sad day.

Nevada Highway Patrol Retires Last Crown Vic, Chargers And Explorers Now Favored

Ford long-lasting symbol of automotive law enforcement is slowly but surely becoming extinct across America.

The latest Crown Victoria casualty belongs to the Nevada Highway Patrol, who just retired their last unit according to News3 Las Vegas, something trooper Jason Buratczuk found "bittersweet".

NHP interim chief, John O'Rourke shares the trooper's feelings, saying that even he used to drive a Crown Vic back in the day, a car that even managed to push a semi at one point.

"It has plenty of room in the back seat for prisoners. The trunk area is large enough for us to put all our equipment," added O'Rourke, while the NHP's garage managed confirmed that it was a very reliable car.

Of course, the newer cars, such as the Dodge Chargers and Ford SUVs are a lot more fuel-efficient and modern, something the Crown Vic was never good at.

"We can take phone calls from dispatchers without having to pull over. And then when we initiate a traffic stop, we can initiate our lights right from the steering wheel."

Still, more modern doesn't necessarily mean more special.

"We have visitors come from all over the world. We had some German police officers come down to the office and wanted to trade some patches and get a tour of our vehicles. We had the brand new Chargers that just came in. They didn't want to look at the Chargers. They wanted to look at the Ford Crown Victoria. I said, 'You don't want to check out the new Chargers?' The German police officer said, 'This is the iconic police car," concluded the trooper.

It's OK, Wimmer. They'll all be taxi cabs before you know it.  ;)

Some local departments around here are still operating Panther cars (Vic/Marquis).  Saw a county Sheriff driving one yesterday.

I think all area forces around here have retired their Crown Vics.  Still see a couple here and there being used as general municipality vehicles, but that's about it.

I want a Panther before they're all gone. Furrreal.

I rode in a mid-1990s Crown Victoria taxi once in San Francisco in 1997. I treasure that experience close to my heart.  :praise:

They are iconic. I already miss them when I watch US TV shows and it's all Taurus and SUVs now.

Very few left (Taxi or Po Po) here in Cleveland. The Dodge Caravan is the choice of Taxi Companies!

Minivans make a lot more sense for taxi service.  Easier to get in and out of, lots of room for passengers and luggage, and get about the same fuel mileage as the CV.

It's probably a better taxi than the Crown Vic (more spacious, efficient etc.), but it's not an automotive icon!

It's happening here too. A lot of B-Classes are replacing E-Classes as taxis. The B-Class is probably the better taxi as it is equally spacious and offers more room for passengers in the rear. Trunk is generous as well. But mt
the E-Class is a taxi icon in Germany starting with the W121s from the 1950s.

Panther-bodies were garbage ten years before they were finally put down.

Good riddance.

That being said, there are a few stragglers doing taxi service in NYC, but as police cars, they seem to be gone entirely.

Dude, they're the ultimate, floaty, durable-as-fuck machines. They're born to eat up miles. I love Panthers. And I may be biased because my grandfather and parents owned one (grandfather gave it to them), but dammit if I don't love those things.

All the driving experience of a 1960s land yacht but wrapped in a bland, 1990s soap-bar styling.
