Title: Return of the Mitsubishi Evo?!
Post by: MX793 on September 21, 2017, 06:13:09 AM
Contain your excitement.  Not satisfied with dragging what shreds of enthusiast cred and dignity remained associated with the Eclipse name through the muck by slapping it on a CUV, Mitsubishi is at it again.  This time with their most hallowed of trademarks: the Evolution.  They've announced plans to revive the Evolution moniker, applied to an electric crossover coupe.  If this doesn't turn away the few lingering Mitsubishi fan bois, nothing will.

Mitsubishi once had some of the most beautiful designs out of all the Japanese car brands.

And look at them now.

An electric EVO sounds so exciting. The thrill of hearing that electric motor scream as its being pushed on the track... oh wait... *Crickets*

I'd imagine it's cashing out their remaining brand equity to try and keep afloat

If you want a DSM, buy a DSM. Everyone wants Mitsubishi to go back to 1993. It's not gonna happen.

Sounds like Mitsu is being reinvented within the Nissan-Renault-Mitsu hierarchy.

Between 1973 and 1977 Mitsubishi built a car called the Galant GTO. Never heard of it? That's because it was limited to Japan and other RHD markets. F*cking sexy.

Mitsubishi was once cool.

Once.

I don't care that Mitsu is building CUVs.  Those sell in volume and the company needs the sales.  Unfortunate that they had to abandon sporty niche cars, but they aren't in the financial position to be able to sell those kinds of vehicles.  I get that, and I don't disrespect the company for it.  Maybe, if and when they right the ship, they can start making exciting cars like the DSM or Lancer Evo again.

It's throwing away names of performance cars on CUVs, CUVs that aren't even performance oriented, that is shameful.  Yeah, the later generations of Eclipse were mere shadows of their forebears, but at least they were still a swoopy, low-slung, sporty coupe.  Slapping the name on mommy-mobile?  That's like GM reviving the Firebird as a minivan.  Even worse is taking the Evolution moniker, a name that only graced their rally race cars and the homologated street-legal variants thereof, and slapping that on a crossover EV.

The next generation won't even know that an Evolution was, in a past life, an iconic rally machine.

That is fair. It does seem like a cynical and cheap way to get press fodder. Nobody would care about this thing with another name.

Carlos Ghosn is the chairman of Mitsubishi Motors.  He neutered the Pathfinder and it sold a lot better.  Sad sad sad.

Most SUV buyers these days just want the space and tall seating position of an SUV, but otherwise want the road manners and capability of a car, perhaps with AWD for snow.  They don't care about towing capacity or off-road prowess, both of which generally compromise comfort and road manners.
