Title: Just bought me a jalopy
Post by: Payman on October 03, 2017, 07:12:42 PM
1986 VW Cabrio, for $1000.

Identical to this one...

I'll post some actual pics when I actually take some and figger out image hosting. Fuck you, photobucket. Anyways, the car is in pretty good shape and runs well. After a thorough cleaning and a few repairs here and there, I'm going to wrap it. Maybe a metallic blue.

Oh yeah, it's autotragic, but that let me use the excuse it's for the wife and daughter to drive.

Congratulations!  One day I'll get around to buying a classic car. From Laconian's suggestion I use Imgur to post photos.  Works great.

I like these MkI Cabrios. Classic design, simple to work on, and dead reliable. Like the NA Miata, they have a following, and you can't lose money on them.

Just teasing.  It's a great little car.  Friend of mine had a Mki GTI way back when.  Swears it was the most fun he ever had driving, even after the Audis and the BMWs he owned afterwards.

Watch Insane 1,000HP VW Golf Mk1 Sleeper Reach 308km/h In 1/2 Mile

www.youtube.com/watch?v=RS8pZwQrzdE

Boba Motoring are back with yet another project - a first-gen Volkswagen Golf with more power than modern supercars.

The super hatch is basically a wolf in sheep's clothing, because apart from some very modest exterior upgrades, and an added roll cage inside for extra protection in case things go bad, it doesn't give away its powerful nature.

However, this old Volkswagen Golf had its 2.0-liter 16V four-cylinder engine modified to the extremes, and it now pushes more than 1,000 horses to all four corners. Its performance is simply mind blowing, as the car managed to reach 308.359km/ (191.61mph) in 1/2-mile, in the first run at a German Race 1000 event, and it was detuned to some 940hp for this.

Its second run should have followed with 1,000+hp, but rain started, and once the track was dry again, another participant left a very long oil spill, so the organizers had nothing to do but cancel it.

Still, hitting 300+km/h (186+mpg) in a car that's 30+ years old is quite an achievement, so we'll let you check out the sprint in the video that follows.

Appraiser coming tomorrow. This will determine the tax I'll need to pay when getting registration, the "vintage auto" license plates, and most importantly, the eligibility for antique car insurance, which is about $100 for the year. Took the seats out today and did a full vacuum, detailed the interior, and installed new black/gray plaid seat covers.

AFAIK most places are 25+ years old for a vintage plate. '86 is 31 years old.

No seriously California is 25 years, but the vehicle must have some historic significance. I guess that would be open to interpretation.

It might be 25.

And there's a vintage plate, and then a "historic" one and I'm not sure what the difference is.

And I only have a soft spot in the one floorboard.

I don't like most historic/vintage plates. The majority have a model T or something, which is totally different than a muscle car.

In ID IIRC, historic is something like 75 years, and classic is 25 or 30 years. They place restrictions on when those cars can be driven, as well, so you're no supposed to drive a classic plated car as a commuter. I doubt the law is often enforced.

Even if the car was $100, and it was over 20 years old, I still req an appraisal to calculate the tax I have to pay when getting it registered in my name. For newer cars they just use blue book value. The 2nd reason for the appraisal is for insurance. A car over 25 yrs old qualifies for vintage status, and the insurance is some 75% less than regular insurance.

Appraised value for tax purposes... $500. Appraised value for insurance... $4500. Actual resale value... somewhere between the two. In reality if I were to sell it I'd be asking $2500-3000.

Can't sell it though. Like a stray puppy, wife and daughter would kill me if I got rid of it.

Wow.  Seems like a lot of work and cost for something that only cost $1000

In the US, you just list whatever you sold it for on the bill of sale & title, and they tax you when you go to get it titled in your name.

Insurance is based on model, year, age, etc.  No one comes and looks at it at all.

Well yeah, same up here, but when the difference between standard insurance and vintage auto insurance is 75%, it's a no brainer to go the vintage route. Plus, annual registration is only $18 instead of $95.

All cars older than 20 years require an appraisal for taxes though.

I may or may not have forgotten a zero on the purchase price when I bought Taco. They never go outside to check anything, so.  It's sort of an unspoken agreement that you leave the price line blank on the title and let the buyer do what they want.  Not everybody does it, but ive found that people that have been around the block a few times honor it.  I think paying sales tax for something that already had sales tax applied to it is bogus.  I've no problem with registration fees based on vehicle class (weight, etc), but repeat taxation is bullshit.

Totally agree that it's bogus, but the assholes up here go by book value, or require an appraisal if it's over 20 years old. What the seller or buyer puts on the bill of sale is irrelevant.

Not in every state. In Texas they go by the higher of the sale value or the blue book value. That's how I got hosed buying a $1000 Volvo but got taxed on $1500 blue book. :rage:

FYI as with most things in Canada it varies from province to province; four provinces have government-run auto insurance agencies. Private insurance companies in other provinces will tend to send out appraisers for any older car, but especially a 'classic' car, to establish roadworthiness and whatever the insurable amount would be. If your jalopy is a jalopy in every sense of the word they're under no obligation to insure it for you and will refuse your business.

With respect to taxes Alberta does not have a sales tax thus there is nothing to levy against the purchase of a used car (in a private party sale; a dealership must pay GST [federal sales tax]) so my government really doesn't care about how much I paid for a used car.

In all the other provinces (where there is a sales tax) most will levy said tax on your purchase but some don't. Saskatchewan for instance has a 6% PST (Provincial Sales Tax) but it is not levied on used car purchases—even ones from dealerships—as long as PST was paid on the original purchase. Ergo if you import a car from another province and sell it in Saskatchewan the buyer will have to pay PST.

At least in Ontario, I believe by law every vehicle is able to be insured. So your usual insurance companies may reject you but there are avenues to ensure your vehicle can be insured - whether at a reasonable rate or not is a whole another question. But by law you will be able to insure your vehicle as long as it's road worthy enough to be registered.

"As long as it's roadworthy" being the operative words here. In Alberta insurance companies cannot refuse to offer you third-party liability coverage, but they're under no obligation to cover you for anything else.

Parts came in yesterday. Brake pads and rotors (it passed safety with the current ones, but they're getting pretty worn), 2x upper strut bearing/caps (one was req to be changed for safety, but might as well change both). Then I have to replace 3 bulbs and safety is done. Total parts bill $123.

Replaced the 2 front strut bearings and the front brakes today. Oh, and a backup light. I have to change the front left maker light, but the screws are rusty and stripped out. I'll tackle that tomorrow. It's the last item to receive my safety slip.

Are you buying parts locally or online? Not sure if Rockauto ships to Canda.
