Volkswagen Scraps Jetta GLI's Manual 'Box

The number of cars available with manual transmissions continues to decline with Volkswagen announcing that the 2018 Jetta GLI won't be offered with a stick-shift.

Ever since the Jetta GLI landed on U.S. soil, a manual transmission has been on offer alongside a six-speed dual-clutch. However, for 2018, the German automaker has decided to make the dual-clutch the only option due to the poor take rate for the manual.

While speaking with CarsDirect, Volkswagen spokesman Mark Gillies said approximately 30 per cent of Jetta GLI's sold have the manual, well below the 50 per cent take rate in the Golf GTI.

Beyond the removal of one gearbox option, the Jetta GLI remains largely unchanged for the 2018 model year. As a result, it continues to utilize a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 210 hp and 207 lb-ft (280 Nm) of torque. Prices start at $30,395, a $1,680 premium over the 2017 model.

It's speculated it still might return for the new 2019 model.

I feel like it's a supply issue; 30% is a very high take rate for an MTX.

I think the real story is because the GLI/Jetta is getting a total redesign and will be on the MQB chassis in about a year or so.

Doesn't matter, GTI is the better car in every way

GLI is cheaper in real world transactions, tho.

You get what you pay for :nono: It's like the Q3 vs the Q5, minus the size difference.

No it's not tho. It's still a competent car....

Yeah, 30% seems like way too high of a rate for them to just stop offering it...

But how many GLI's are actually sold? 30% of not many is even fewer.

Honestly, VW is just a shitty car company. This current Jetta was never better than mediocre and has been on the market for 7 years. What the hell are they doing?

There's a decent chance that Eric ends up with a GLI when we get back since he's always been obsessed with Jettas. It's the only version of this generation that looks anything other than boring as hell, and, at this rate, it seems unlikely they will have the new model out in time. Should be able to get a hell of a deal though.

Sigh.

But then again, since the chassis split, I wouldn't have gone for a GLI anyway.

With the oooooooolllllldddd EA888... that shit is MK5 spec. Meanwhile a base GTI, with a better engine, bigger trunk, lower weight, and newer chassis, starts at like 25K

The Jetta has improved steadily since its 2011 introduction. Better engines and more features for the money, and respectable suspension composure. It's not a sports sedan, but I drove a Kia Forte right after the last Jetta I drove....and it was terrible on curves that the VW had been handling without any fuss.

Dull to look at, though, no question. But aging fairly gracefully, at least.

Well, I guess when you set the bar at the Kia Forte, plenty of cars clear it.
