However, the (almost new) Plymouth Reliant that I had the misfortune to have to drive for a short period was a pile of garbage with so many things wrong with it I wouldn't know where to begin. I ways happy when it finally sprung a leak in the head gasket and I had a good excuse to get rid of it.
Its been a long time since I drove a car that truly sucked. Most cars have some redeeming feature. I think I recall driving a rental Altima ~10 years ago that was truly awful to drive (wallowy, slow, and huge), but then again it had a ton of space inside so I can see why some people would want it.

Cobalts are OK cars; and a huge improvement over the Cavaliers they replaced. HHRs were hastily built onto the Cobalt platform in order to try and glom onto the ill-advised bargain retro segment defined by the PT Cruiser.
I think all that needs to be said is the PT was a much better car.
Perhaps not a bad car, but the only time I drove a Pontiac Sunfire (circa 2003) the handling felt so limp that I had to get out to see if the tires were flat. They weren't.

I had a Cobalt rental for a day and it was thoroughly mediocre. Much better than the J bodies, but far from class leading. The electric steering assist was terrible. The steering wouldn't self center after taking a corner. I actually had to point the wheels straight again rather than just letting go of the wheel and letting the caster re-center the steering. It also was all over the place WRT how much assist you got. Sometimes I'd turn the wheel and it would be nicely weighted, other times it would feel like there was no power assist, and other times it would be overboosted. Wasn't even a speed thing, since I would notice this taking 90 degree turns at intersections at the same ~10 mph speed.

I didn't have it very long, just a loner from a body repair shop. The engine seemed pretty stout, but with such crappy handling, I felt I might end up in the ditch if I pushed it too hard.

Before the Focus I had an '09 Pontiac G5 Pursuit, and yeah the steering was horrid. Only had the car for a 18 months and was glad to get rid of it.

I fit a crate engine (in the crate) into the back of one. I'd say that cargo space is acceptable :huh:

A motorcycle engine? Otherwise, it's hard to believe. If a small block without any headers and just a bare intake fit in, maybe.
Smart car. Rented one with my wife in Italy some 12 years ago. Transmission sucked, felt like I was going to get squashed on the road if anything hit me including a motorcycle, wasn't that fuel efficient, and isn't that cheap.
I've rented PT Cruisers and an HHR in the past. I loved the Cruiser. Felt nimble and just a well thought out package. The HHR felt ponderous. I don't remember any of the other stuff Soup pointed out but I remember thinking the PT Cruiser felt like a much better car.

Well, the Neon was a decent small car platform with hydraulic steering, and the HHR was a Cobalt platform with early and horrible electric assist steering, so that explains it right there.

thought of another. I had a Hyundai Sonata as a rental (>10 years ago) that was worse than the Altima. I had forgotten about it because the newer ones are so much nicer. I remember the seat (or seating position) was just so bad I could not get comfortable. IIRC it had a V6 thought so it could scoot along ok, but wasn't particularly fast.

Astra is on same platform, it doesn't do that.

- half-baked design; the design looks like it was finalized in 1999, and they forgot they did a whole ass car and just put it in the microwave for it to reheat and sell to us in 2014

- the manual transmission feels low quality

Seconded. The Aveo vs Sonic is such a huge jump. The Aveo got no MPG, was slow, ugly, and had clumsy handling for what should be a manageable small car.

I won't say this SUCKED per se, but I am still very disappointed with the non-sport F30 328i. Interior quality was not great, and the chassis tuning was downright horrible for a BMW. Idrive also is on the bottom half of infotainment interfaces I've used; which is strange as Mazda copied it and did a way better job. Needs a sport package; my friend's 228i M-Sport is legit.

Outside dimensions aren't much larger, though. The pulleys increase the length, but the intake isn't much taller than the valve covers on that engine.

So my friend married this girl who I'm friends with. Her dad was a big time plant manager for Chrysler. So he's got some awesome cars. Had a viper gts, 1970 challenger in plum purple, cls63 amg, Plymouth sport fury, etc.
Unfortunately the side effect is that his kids all buy FCA cars too. And unfortunately at the budget end, they make some total shit.
She has a dodge nitro which may be the worst car I've ever experienced. The son in law, my friend, just bought a Chrysler 200 :facepalm: kills me.
Remember when sporty thought a 200 would be a good idea. lol
The Nitro is pretty crappy, but a bit better than the Caliber.
There are a couple I can recall, but one especially bad one was a Fiat 500L we rented in Italy. It had the SMT, a transmission I'm amazed an engineer signed off on. Gigantic, gigantic piece of shit and ugly too.
I say we rename this the FCA thread. They currently make the biggest pieces of shit on the road by lightyears.
