Oh I fucking love the LT5 it's totally underrated
Is that related to the Northstar?

No.  LT5 was designed by Lotus Engineering and was very loosely based on the SBC (retained the 4.4" bore spacing of the SBC, that's about it).  Northstar was developed in-house, at roughly the same time, by Oldsmobile division as a ground-up new motor.

I recall that it came out about the same time as the Ford's modular engine and was developed in Minnesota, hence Northstar.  It was promoted by some as a 'world class engine' at the time.  GM just gave up on it; it seems.

I would hardly say they "gave up on it": after all the Northstar V8 was 20 years old when they discontinued it.

Well, they went back to the simple OHV pushrod.  Haven't really read enough about it to understand why.

There wasn't much incentive to have two completely different V8 families. Still isn't.

And the newer, "High Feature" DOHC V6 engine family makes about the same power as the Northstar did while returning better fuel economy to keep up with CAFE.

Considering that V8s are on the verge of obsolescence, I guess it doesn't much matter now.

Well, no, they just stopped putting V8s into new cars other than one-offs like the Corvette, Camaro and CTS-V.

Northstar was designed for transverse FWD layouts, wasn't it? Not really compatible with Cadillac's RWD bent.

Yes, although it was later adapted for RWD.  The RWD STS, XLR sports car, and SRX SUV all used it in the mid-00s, and V versions got a supercharged variant.

Do pickups count?

Though it should be said that more than half of F-150s sold last year were EB V6s.

2/4.  You can still get a Duratec V6 as the base engine.

Lost 3rd gear on the GT4 today at the track. It basically behaves as if it's in neutral when 3rd gear is engaged.

I did a little research and I guess a new tranny will be coming from Germany. Lots of identical failures docjmented here: https://rennlist.com/forums/gt4/954397-gt4-g81-transmission-failure-12.html

I think this is a big screwup by Porsche. Had no idea this was a thing before it happened to me.

It just felt as if I had missed the shift and the car was in neutral. I was accelerating onto a straight so it hit the rev limiter.
