Musk & Co. are praying ti the Jesus that the government mandates (and corresponding handouts) come to fruition. There is simply no rational business strategy to EVs in anything remotely resembling the current state of things.

If so, watch for a firesale on a nationwide charging network.  Prime investment opportunity there!!

The video was sort of interesting. One point I noticed was their claim that having their manufacturing location next to (or near) their headquarters was some sort of advantage. I kind of see why they would think this from a "strategic" point of view, but not sure it will translate to profit based on my experience.

Our company has three sites that all make the same basic product. One of those sites is attached to our head office here in NJ. And...as one would expect, most engineering and R&D happens here and all the new technology gets rolled out here first (so the head office people can see and manage how things work in production). Once a technology is considered "settled" it is then rolled out to the satellite plants (in VA and IN, FWIW).

But what that means from a P&L point of view is that those two satellite plants are where we make all of our money. The manufacturing plant here in NJ is a perennial money loser. We keep it open and running because as I said there is strategic value in being able to deploy technology so close to our engineering and R&D facilities...but there is no expectation that this plant will ever make money (we mainly just try to keep the bleeding to a minimum).

Ha, ha! CA is NOT a right-to-work state, so here cometh the UAW. Trying not to gloat - I wouldn't wish that on anyone - even an entity so nonsensical as Tesla.

Not sure if serious, but that would be akin to being afraid of flying because you might crash.

The "production" model 3 vehicles they've made wouldn't even classify as PT1 (production trial 1) builds for all other OEMs. And those aren't saleable vehicles for normal OEMs. Usually there's 3 production trials before you hit saleable too.

Also, they "built" zero in October. None. They're a train wreck.

Cuz WSJ is traditional and wants real results, Tesla is the "we're better than everyone else! ... Cuz we say so!" attitude that traditionalists see right through. Just like many of y'all here see through their BS. :mrcool:

History is littered with technically brilliant innovators who were first off the starting line but never made it to the finish. Tesla is staring this fate right in the face.

Someone bigger will come along &, probably with a technically inferior product, make a success of what Tesla started.

I keep thinking of R. Buckminster Fuller in comparison (or more likely a dedicated patron thereof, as I don't think Musk himself is that accomplished as an engineer, but rather should be seen as a modern futurist).

You see his influence in designs everywhere, across most of the 20th century, but most of his projects were failures.

If Elon would humble himself just by like .03%, he could complete his vision. His dreams are not that far fetched from reality, but his self-imposed deadlines and business model are.

Involved; as an organizer, a motivator, and a visionary. Not necessarily as an engineer.

There's a difference between being a brilliant visionary with enough grasp of engineering to have an idea of what might actually be possible and being a talented engineer.  I've worked with the former (well, not Musk levels of brilliant, but definitely an idea/vision person).  Spent a considerable amount of effort over the past few years cleaning up their messes because they weren't a particularly great engineer (i.e. not detail oriented or process oriented) since they've moved onward and upward in the chain.  A real knack for seeing a new technology and seeing a way to incorporate it into what we do, though.
