Oh right, let's compare a new and expanding company to established companies - with the caveat that they were in the same position 40 years ago

Last I checked, Microsoft and Apple didn't build out factories, assembly plants, and a nation wide charging station in their first 8 years

Tesla didn't build a Nationwide charging network in their first 8 years, either...

QuoteCancellations for Model 3 orders have picked up in recent weeks. Refunds now outpace deposits for Tesla's new mass-market electric car, according to Needham & Co. analyst Rajvindra Gill. Tesla is pushing back on his findings.

In an analyst note delivered to clients Thursday, Gill cited extended wait times for the car, the expiration of a $7,500 tax credit, and the fact that Tesla has not yet made the $35,000 base model of the car available for purchase yet.

About one in every four Model 3 orders is canceled -- double the rate from a year ago, Gill said. Customers have to put down a refundable $1,000 deposit to reserve a Model 3, then pay another $2,500 to choose their specific version. They pay the rest when the car is delivered.

Good.  That's no way to sell cars.  Or promises.

Actually, did the reporter list cancellations of ORDERS or cancellation of reservations? I can see cancellation of reservations being that high, but not of actual orders. The reservations were refundable, the orders not, IIRC.
Like a fine Detroit wine, this vehicle has aged to budgetary perfection...

A few weeks ago Tesla changed their revenue reocgnition on the orders and increased the amount needed.  The cash crunch is real.

I think reservations is the safe assumption here. If you placed the non-refundable $2500 deposit at that point you would be better off taking delivery and then reselling it (or selling your order).

MX793

Read an article maybe a month or so ago that noted that cancelled reservations had really started taking off at around the same time Musk announced that they weren't planning to produce any of the much-touted $35,000 base models for a while yet (so back in April).

All the numbers indicate the high sales price model 3 demand is just about dried up. This is based off projected delivery dates depending on model. If you Option out a long range one, it can be delivered within the month.

What's funny is that the delivery numbers isn't climbing at the same rate as the "factory gated" numbers. Indicates there's massive amounts of reworked vehicles somewhere. Most people were estimating it was in the range of 10,000 to 15,000 vehicles.

I would guess the holdback on sales had to do with timing when they would hit 200,000. By hitting 200,000 in July instead of June they are setting it up so that more people will be able to use the federal tax credit.

It's been July for almost 3 weeks.

I can't decide if this is a very shady attempt at boosting Q3 top line in an attempt to be cash flow positive for a change or just utter incompetence. I think it's a deadly mix of the two

IIRC they sold their 200,000 car the second week of July. It was reported July 12th.

It could have been just a lucky coincidence (because now every car sold between July and December gets the full 7,500 credit, whereas if they sold the 200,000th car two weeks earlier the full credit would end on September 30th) but I doubt it.

I would suspect those cars are waiting a missing part, or a part was found defective and needs to be replaced before delivery.

Its the Fiat Chrysler business model.

Fiat Chrysler has their own problems, but Tesla's supply chain is on a whole different level of a chaos even compared to Fiat Chrysler.

The 3, C class etc are compacts. That said if they actually sell 15K cars a month, more power to them.

Nice shot at a deflection, but the 3 competes with the 3er, C Class, A4, and Is.

Sure.

The car is literally trash on all objective measures, with the exception of the power-train being only saving grace. And even that is questionable with Tesla's quality (or lack of)
