Best choice for long distance commuting car..

Space/comfort, running/maintenance costs, depreciation with the high mileage, and that's even before this twist that you would need to leave a second car there because it's too "exotic". Terrible choice for the intended role, imo.

If you really want the Porsche and can justify and afford having a seventh? car go for it, but don't try to rationalize it by telling yourself it would make an ideal long distance commuter

You've already kinda got the ultimate highway cruiser in your stable. This one really comes down to how badly you want the autonomous driving features; I was looking at the Macan S as a wildcard to the ones you had mentioned and even it only got 20ish mpg. You could replace your world's-most-expensive-transmission-this-side-of-a-Ferrari like 3X before it makes the same kind of dent as a new car.

If you're looking at the 440 and C-Class just go with the XE or F-Type instead of the XF, or get the Porsche 'cause that's what you really want.

Depending on price, that could be a good deal.

Less money than any of the cars in question.

Not enough range to make it from Leon to MC without stopping for fuel about halfway.  And it'll likely not be much faster than a car save for if there is a traffic jam.  Also not sure how well it would do at Mexico City's altitude.  Max altitude on those things is maybe 8000 ft.  MC is over 7200'.

Please elaborate.

As a toy? Sure. On a long journey thru Mexico, 3 hours one way? All the time? What's the point? Especially since you can't even drive it around the city because it may get stolen, vandalized, etc. What's the point of buying it if you can't really use it, and you're using it in a banal way?

Or at least a more basic Porsche? Boxster? Cayman??

A 911 seems like a waste for that commute.

You guys are right about the Porsche. Wrong car for this use. It would work as a 1M/E46 replacement. Weekend toy/ocassional track car. And to putter around Leon where conditions are better than in MC.

I agree with your M5 math too. Even at say, 5K in repairs per year it would end up less expensive than a new car. The only thing is that it will probably leave me in the middle of nowhere waiting for a tow a few times. But it is a fucking highway missile that thing. Anything short of the engine blowing would be manageable. The engine shouldn't blow for the next 20K miles or so. Then I need to do a rod bearing preventive replacement maintenance for about 3K or so.

I guess we need an option called "Run the E60 M5 to the ground for 150K miles". The M5 is worth about 25K today in the local market here. Meaning to a few club friends who have expressed firm interest in buying it from me.

The Macan S and the BMW X4 M40i are also options.

Mexico City airport has no private aviation. It is saturated with commercial flights. Maybe the new airport coming online in 3 years or so will have them. For now, you have to fly into Toluca which is a hassle. Plus, the running costs on a plane I can't even fathom. I am far, very far from being able to even consider that.

The Mosquito is a kit aircraft.  They actually aren't all that expensive to own or run.  Not like a "normal" plane.

No active cruise control, not really that comfortable IMO. I've driven a few V6s. They're ok but not that impressed. Not my style I think.

No mention of it in the mexican site. Just checked. One thing that sucks here is that other than BMW, Porsche, Audi and to some extent Mercedes the configurable options on most other brands are extremely limited. Cars are sold in a few standard configs only. And for the european ones that you can configure, the wait to delivery is 3-4 months.

Active cruise is strange and awesome.  I drove my first vehicle with driver assists last summer.  A Subaru I detailed.  I felt it tugging at the steering wheel and shit and it was freaking me out...then I realized "ahhhh, is this what lane departure control is?!"  The adaptive cruise I figured out pretty quick, but the steering thing was so weird since I wasn't expecting it.  Super beneficial for that customer, too, as she is handicapped with a bum arm and some other movement handicaps that I've never really asked about.

I've driven only two cars with autonomous features. A friend's Tesla (awesome) and a new 5er briefly (very good). For long highway drives in traffic I think these features are fantastic.

Well, minutes ago I got the new Car and Driver May issue. They compare 540i, XF-S, A6, E43 and CTS-VSport. Gave it a glance.

It seems their recent anti-BMW rhetoric continues. Order is:

E43 > CTS > A6 > 540i > XF-S

540i has the best engine, drivetrain, interior, and is the best luxury car of the group they say. The CTS-V Sport is not for sale here. The Merc we get only in E400 form, not E43. Worth a look but in that case I think it´d be best to wait for the coupe.

For a few years now BMW seems to win on euro mags (the new 5er has beaten all comers in euro mags so far like CAR and Autocar) and gets dragged to the ground in the american press, both C&D and Motor Trend.

Ford's offerings in foreign markets aren't the same as in the US.  I'm not sure they offer adaptive cruise outside of the US and Canada.  I believe it was docked points by EuroNCAP for not having any kind of automated driving features (they view adaptive cruise as a safety feature).

Yeah I would keep the M5. That's already the perfect highway cruiser. Plus, it's not like any of the newer cars' maintenance and upkeep will be any better.

Only reason I'd dump the M5 is to get something super fuel efficient like a Volt.

I'd need the 90D at least to get enough range. I really like the Tesla but it is priced stupidly high here. The car I'd need would be about 125K here. Can't afford that.

Bolt is not available yet Here. I doubt I'd like it enough but maybe.
