How easy is that engine to terbow?  Iron block?

Aluminum.  It's not worth it.  It'll cost the same to swap an already turbocharged engine (wrx etc) into it.

Don't  understand why so many people have issues with lowering an Outback.  These are 20+ year old cars, there aren't a ton out there anymore.  It's like saying why put a V8 in your I6 Chevy II?  Or why put QA1 coilovers on your IROC when you could have bought a 1LE car instead?  I bet if someone lifted a Legacy you'd be over there like

Well I think it's funny just because if I were to get an Outback, the extra ground clearance would be the whole point. It seems less silly on a Legacy since the Legacy wasn't already raised from the factory, even though I'm assuming the same suspension kits can go on either model.

But I don't actually take issue with it. It just makes me  a little.

Yeah everything swaps over directly, although the Outback comes with larger sway bars from the factory so clearly we should use those if we want a good handling wagon  :praise:

But like I said these are 20 year old vehicles, and when you find a clean one you just gotta go with it.  I wanted a Legacy GT wagon, but couldn't find one so was forced to "make" my own.  I've also grown to prefer the two tone.

Added bonus info:  The Outback started out as just an "cold weather" package, and when it was introduced shared the Legacies suspension so really we are just bringing it back to it's roots.

Pretty sure that with friends who base their desire to camp on one of them getting a car that is supposed to be good at that, the ride height won't be an issue.

This. I don't think it's bad. It just cracks me up. The original Outback was literally the Legacy with cosmetic changes and what, an inch or two extra height?  A friend wanted one so badly it was the first time I'd heard of 8yr car loans. He didn't pull the trigger though.

About 3 years ago I was in Legacy when another Legacy (same generation) passed me. Cracked me up because I think he put the Outback suspension on but it just looked....  off.  Maybe he even had an extra inch over an Outback.

The original Outback (1995) actually had no extra height oddly enough

That's why I jumped on this one so fast. Only year that had the good bumper but with a 2.2 instead of the 2.5.

Eh I'd rather have ever a wagon than an SUV.  Just as practical while still having good driving dynamics. This car isn't much slower than the miata around corners on the street for the most part.

I hauled two bikes in my '96 Monte Carlo way back in the day. Granted, wheels had to come off and stuff, but it fit. Also transported my entire drum kit in that car multiple times.

Congrats!  I'd keep my radio at a very low volume until I'm completely out of the the suburban town you're in.  Otherwise someone's going to steal your stereo/speakers.  It's gonna happen.  Every kid I know when I was in high school and college who had aftermarket subwoofers had them stolen sooner or later.  It's like flies to exposed sugar.

Daily commuting 20 miles each way in high traffic California on a motorcycle seems like a death wish.  Very glad you only broke your collarbone and not your head/neck/spine/body.

Very sorry to probably sound like your old man.  I like your new daily ride.  Maybe dump the RX7.  It's unlikely to be driven anytime in the next few years (my guess) and insurance isn't cheap.  Plus driveway space.  Once you're more financially well off and have your own house, garage, and driveway - then get another classic that you yearned for when you were a child.

Thanks!

I don't listen to the volume super high so it generally isn't noticeable. Plus,  I live in Palo Alto,  land of the Teslas and BMW/MBs. I once left the key to my friend's RX7 in the hatch overnight and nothing happened. :mask:

I don't think anyone will want anything to do with my old cars. *knock on wood*

Also yeah,  I got lucky that it was just my collarbone and that I healed so quickly. No physical therapy needed either.

And yeah,  the RX7 will be for sale as soon as I can stop tinkering with the Subaru and fix it. I'd like a cleaner FB in the future.

Damn Cale made me buy transmission bushings. Such a bad influence.

According to Wiki, 1996.

QuoteWhen the 1996 model year arrived, it gained more aggressive appearing front bumper covers, with larger rallye inspired driving lamps replacing the previously installed fog lights, taller tires with more aggressive tread, and a 7.8 in (198 mm) ground clearance, with a 7.87 in (200 mm) ground clearance in Japan.

Got a lot of stuff done today.

Went to a friend's house and swapped end links, changed the transmission and differential fluids and tried my friend's WRX wheels on. Unfortunately, the WRX wheels didn't fit since they rub the coilovers but damn they look good:

Then 3 friends and I cruised around town blasting music. Good day overall, till I checked the engine oil level and found out to be insanely overfilled. Went to Walmart and got oil on the way home and did an emergency oil change at 9PM. Thankfully I didn't have to jack the car up to drain the oil and replace the filter.

Off to the junkyard tomorrow morning to find more Outback/Legacy parts!

Scored big today at the junkyard. There was a newer green Outback there so I ended up pulling the hood to get the scoop and to get rid of the shitty paint on my hood. I also tried to get the tail lights out but apparently they've got some sealant on them that made it impossible to pull the light out without cracking the lenses, so that was a no go. I also got some interior bits and a clean set of fog lights.

The hood had a $5 core refund charge and the yard wouldn't let us work on the car in the parking lot, so I stuck the hood in the back of the car, and my friend and I drove to the local mall a mile away, parked in their lot, swapped hoods, and then drove back to the junkyard for the core refund.

I also updated the interior with some later Legacy bits. Fogs will get yellow Lamin-x and paint.
