I should probably get a backup vehicle. My preference is waggin instead of another pickup. Don't care about much. Autotragic is okay. A/C and > 20 MPG is also good. Commonly < $2000 is good. Expensive repairs are no good.

Did someone say Waggin?

I've had my 2000 Volvo wagon since 2006. Best car I've owned (except 1964 VW camper, but the V70 has been more reliable). My V70 has hauled lawnmowers, wood fence planks, and a lot of gear for weddings. It down right now, not sure if it is out. Still counting.

Is it turbo or no? And what kind of MPG do you get?
I have a soft spot for Saabs. Should be able to get an old one for cheap too.

I like how the 9-5 2.3T drives, even though the autotragic's manual shift mode is pointlessly unresponsive.
Buy John's Volvo. It needs some lovin. You can provide that lovin.

Non-turbo. It averages about 26mpg overall. On the freeway at 70mph, the display shows 32-33mpg.

It needs a lot of lovin'. I still haven't listed it for sale yet. I'm having a difficult time coming to grips with the idea of not owning it.
I've owned a Saab---I got rid of it for the Volvo. The Saab was great to drive, but it was an electronic nightmare. SID was failing--$600 to replace. Turbo vent sludge problems for that year. The clincher was the alarm going off. The alarm back-up module is sealed, with two AA batteries inside. But, it is sealed? You have to remove the front bumper cover and break open the module, replace the batteries, then try to seal it back up well enough that water doesn't intrude and destroy it. Stupid design.
Saabs were also early to the "radio that's integrated with everything" craze, but they look like regular double DIN units. So u get the stodgy dash design with out the ability to replace the radio. Yea pass on them.

A sub-$2000 backup vehicle for work...yeah, radio is #1 Priority I'm sure.
The Saturns are OK in 4cyl guise. The 3.0L should be avoided at all costs.
The Saab is impossible to get parts for.
The Volvos are ok, but the 940 is more reliable than the tempermental 850
The V40 is absolute garbage
The Tercel is awesome, but good luck finding one
Legacy is solid
The Focus is OK

Let me know when you decide to sell it, if it's in the next month. I'm buying pretty soon.
It will probably end up being whatever is s good deal at the time, but most likely one of the choices I listed.

What year Tercel? When I worked for Toyota back in the 1990s, we dreaded those things because of temperamental throttle bodies causing stalling problems. I think the TB was updated six times in one year.
A 4WD wagon one would be like an 1985-1986. Great cars, terrible rust.
You would probably find a Corolla All Trac easier
I like the Tercel better. An older one with a carburetor would be sweet, but impossible to find.
I forgot about PT Cruiser. I'd pay $2K for one.

How about an 01-06 Escape? It's essentially a tall station wagon.
Also a late 90's Escort Wagon might be a consideration if you can find one that's in good shape. Cheap and about 90% of the cargo capacity of the Escape and with a manual it gets over 30 MPG.
Escapes are still expensive because SUV WOW.
Escorts are usually pretty junky by now.
Saturns, however, depriciate like Jaguars. Still fresh, but cheap as anything.

Civic and Escort wagons are both pretty old by now. But there's plenty of decent Focus wagons still out there going for peanuts.
Or you could try to find one of the seven Mitsubishi Lancer wagons they supposedly sold in America back in 2004.

Nick, buy the family Truckster. It doesn't meet your mileage requirements, but its mechanically solid and could use a respite from winter salt.
Then, I'll buy the OJ/Nuge mobile and make everybody think I'm over compensating.

There was a lot of problems with the vans, that added up, but never actually killed it....well, it did have an overheating problem that blew head gaskets. When I was with Toyota East in 1990, we had one of the buy-backs as a service shuttle. I loved that van. But, Toyota had already started to restrict parts availability making it a poor choice, and I was into air-cooled VWs at the time and my money went down that drain instead.
Secret or soft recalls were numerous back then. I think the 24-hour news cycle and social media has all but eliminated those now. When I was with Honda in the 1980s, Accords had a terrible water leak into the cabin between the body and right front fender. Civics prior to 1980 and again around 1986 went through head gaskets like crazy as Honda tried different designs and materials to stop the problem. Late seventies Accords had corrosion problems on the front fenders, even in dry climates--rusting through in less than two or three years. Benz 190Es were terrible and had like twenty recalls all at the same time. It would take two days to complete the list. Now people recall them as a great little ride.
