Title: Ghetto or no?
Post by: 12,000 RPM on December 07, 2015, 11:29:58 AM
Wifey and I have the same size tires (205-55R16). We both need new front tires. Would it be bad juju to put my rear tires on her fronts so I can get my Conti DWS06s all around? I have some crap Goodyear RS-As and she has some Continental bullshits. Ordinarily I would not but I figure it would be better than her near bald tires now. And either way I am on the hook for a full set of tires.

If the grip levels are similar you'd probably be fine. I'm not a fan of mismatched tires, but for a non-performance car it's much less of an issue. Especially since you're in the south.

Nah, not really bad juju. If they've got tread left on them, go for it.

But it does suggest that you've got an alignment problem, or you just never rotate your tires...  Rotate your tires!

Why don't you put your front in her rear instead? :winkguy: :pullover:

I once had a work truck with two brands of tires on it, but they were diagonal to each other.

A guy doing work for me on my house had 4 different brands and very different tread patterns on his 1991 GMC Sierra.

That way it all evens out.  Like early, 2-channel ABS that put wheels diagonal from each other on a single channel.

Is he oblivious, inept, or does he know exactly what he is doing?

He's a circle track racer and needs different grip on each corner.

So he knows exactly what he is doing. I always allow for that possibility.

Probably buying used tires as the ones on the car go bad one at a time.

My pickup came with Michelins front and rear, fairly new in front, ten years old and signs of dry rot on the rear.  I replaced those two with the right size Douglas cheapos from Walmart.  Since we drive the truck less than 1,000 miles a year and just in town when we need the hauling ability they work just fine in that application.

Biggest con of Subaru is buying 4 tires every time.

If you rotate them properly they should all wear evenly.

Big curb gash in the sidewall one time, nail too close to sidewall another time

S2000 has directional tires and different sizes on front and rear. :( Can't rotate front to back, and would have to get a tire shop to remount them to do a side-to-side rotation.

I've got different widths as well. Side to side rotation doesn't seem super helpful unless you only turn left.
