Tesla S plaid supposedly traps 155, and the Plaid + will likely trap more.

So apparently the new Model S plaid, will trap 155mph for 120k.  Which is quite a lot of trap speed for the money.

For the Plaid + to hit <9.0 seconds in the quarter, it will likely trap around 160mph if the regular plaid traps 155mph to run 9.25.

That's a better trap speed than a Chiron.

Will any drag strips permit a car that fast to run without a roll cage?

No NHRA sanctioned ones. The Dodge Demon is pretty close to running into that issue.

Stock, unmodified cars fall under different rules than modified ones.

But, no: probably not

When the Demon came out, this was the NHRA response:

In his official letter to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles regarding the Dodge Demon, Glen Gray, National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Vice President of Technical Operations, stated, "The car exceeded our limits of 9.99-seconds and 135 mph. Therefore, it must be brought into compliance with the rules and regulations found in Section 4 of the NHRA Rulebook."

Chief among these additional safety requirements is a NHRA-certified roll cage. According to the NHRA, all vehicles that run a quarter-mile in under 10 seconds are required to include a roll cage before they can be raced on the strip.

...

The NHRA requires all drivers who race in a vehicle that runs a quarter-mile in less than 10 seconds to wear SFI-certified jackets, pants, and gloves, as well as a helmet.

Finally, drivers will need to hold an official NHRA Competition License before they can race the Demon across the drag strip.

The Plaid could still go to the drags and run 10+ seconds without problems. Just can't go all-out without a roll cage.

What's the point of 155 mph in a Tesla when the battery craps out soon after?

Sounds like my vacuum cleaner.  It has 3 speeds, using the low speed, the battery lasts almost an hour, the middle speed is about half an hour, but put it on high, it lasts less than 10 minutes...as well as sounding like a jet taking off.

Years ago I drove from the Nürburgring back to Munich at flat-out 200-210 km/h in my ex-BMW 118i. Those were the days when that Autobahn had basically zero speed limits and at night traffic was non-existent. At those speeds I had a range of roughly 200-220 km meaning I had a fuel consumption of about 25 L / 100 km (fuel tank capacity was 53 liters). A Tesla Model S wouldn't even make it passed 100 km at 155 mph.

I'm all for higher top speeds because speeding is awesome and fun, but the cars need to be able to sustain those speeds for longer periods (that's part of the comfort experience for me).

AFAIK the Veyron comes from the factory with special tires engineered for those speeds.

For 10 minutes; which is why the Veyron has the gas tank as small as it is; to limit that.

But ask yourself: where the fuck are you going to go 240 for like 10 minutes straight? That's 40 fucking miles.

Its the same question: who is doing back to back 9 second pulls in any car at any time?

Only way you're doing back-to-back runs is if you rent the track for the day.

9 second ICE cars need a quick cool down as well.

In theory this is possible on certain sections of the Autobahn late at night or in the early mornings.

When I was racing back to Munich from the Nürburgring I was basically at top speed most of the time, only slowing down when some idiot pulled out ahead of me. The cool thing was that at one gas station I opened my engine bay and could feel all that heat escaping. Ah, the joys of high-speed cruising.  :praise:

Yup on a non-crowded weekday you can go high speed for a long time.

I used to drive from Mannheim to Kaiserslautern quite often. Much of it is 100km/h but there are a few spots to really open up.   My top speed in the SHO though was somewhere down by Karlsruhe.

Yeah. The Witcher is terrible.

Not The Witcher in particular, but they could literally choose to show anything on that screen, and they chose heavily young male oriented video games.
