My brother's '93 Explorer is in pretty bad shape... We just had to get the alternator and tensioner replaced as well as the front brake pads and rotors. (both of which I told my parents needed to be replaced but they didn't listen and when they crapped out they learned their lesson about listening to me...)
But anyways, the paint around the wheel-wells and areas like that is coming off. The areas where there isn't any paint is rust. I was wondering if there is any way to stop the continuation of the paint peeling or chipping without having to paint the entire car or something. If I removed the rust would that help? I wanna know because I'm gonna have to drive this beast when I turn 16 and I don't want to be driving a rust bucket around... :P

I doubt we'd get it repainted...after I drive it for 2 years (i'll get a car of my choice when I turn 18) I don't think we'll keep it. I don't think it would be necessary to pay for a complete re-paint if it's only gonna be used for another 3 years...but I don't know...

Well I'm not gonna spend any money on it...but actually if it woulda been something like 50-100 bucks to get it all fixed or whatever I'd do it... But I guess I'll just dremel away the rust and go from there. :praise:

All three of the people that owned it in my family (my dad, then my brother, then my other brother) have been in an accident with it... The front bumper is dented in from my oldest brother...The driver's door is dented in from my dad and me hitting a snowbank at about 40 MPH cause the road was complete ice...and the left sideskirt is gone because my brother somehow went into a snowbank on a straight road while going uphill... <_< :P :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: I'm gonna break the chain and NOT get in an accident with it! :lol:

Part-time...sure! Yeah..you have to "lock" the front wheels and then shift it into 4WD when you want it...and then you have to "unlock" the wheels when you want to shift out of it... <_< Not much fun when it's 10 degrees out...

If it's just surface rust (no holes) then sand it down, then rattle can paint it.
If your brother will not let you do this to "his" car then at least have him let you apply some rust treatment (the stuff that stops the spreading so that it won't get any rustier by the time you have it).

B18C1 engine is what justifies the price, mostly.
It's worth about $2500 along with the transmission.
Plus you can strip the rest of the car for parts, or rebuild it.

Well...I guess technically you could consider the entire Upper Peninsula a rural area...so maybe that's why, but I dunno...my area just doesn't have an Auto Zone. We have NAPA and Menards and Wal-Mart for that so there really isn't any need...so the closest one is about 90 miles away...oh well. :angry:

Yeah...although in the past 3 years we've gotten 3 new major stores (Kohl's, Target, Pier 1 Imports) and they upgraded our Wal-Mart to a "SuperCenter" so we're deffinitely climbing...but Wal-Mart still sucks because the parking lot is cramped and you have to walk all the way across the thing to the store because there aren't any close spots because people are parked there all day and the store's a mess. <_< So we just go to Target where my brother works and have trouble-free shopping with a 10% discount on everything! :praise:

Yup. With a good prep job, spray paint can actually look pretty nice. I don't mean spray painting the whole car, just the areas where you fixed the rust. Find the closest possible match to stock paint (take into account that it has probably fadded a bit) wash the surface really well, do it indoors if possible on a day when there is no wind and learn to spray paint correctly so there are no drips or puddles of paint and it'll hardly be noticeable. My car has been painted with a spray can, and I didn't even notice it untill after a bought it.
79 civic 95k miles and needed to have the carb rebuilt = $150, I am picking it up sunday, it took me a week to clean out that silicon.

you could always scuff it a little bit with sand paper before you put it on ...although that might make scratchs instead....if you get some....do a test piece first...who knows it might work....

I'd probably sand or dremel all of the rust off, first to ensure that there would be less rust under the surface so that I don't have to worry about extreme rust problems.
definitely the first step has to be rust removal...hopefully the panels havent rusted out
