Title: O God. Am I going to buy a Prius????
Post by: 12,000 RPM on June 21, 2014, 09:44:01 PM
Wifey wants a hybrid for her next car but I can't think of any that fit the bill (gotta be a hatch or SUV). On my drive back from NYC on a little 90 MPH spurt I was getting tailed by a current gen Prius. I didn't know they could do 90? It had the "sport" package (freeze breeze 17s) which reviewers say makes it actually decent to drive. I'm just worried about the power

The RX400h is another idea... gets about 30 MPG combined and ~33 city which is good as wifey's commute is stop n go hell, but it also does 0-60 in the mid 6s. I'll be honest though, I prefer the looks of the Prius

Any other ideas for a semi luxury SUV/wagon that does 0-60 in <10s and gets >30 MPG combined? We are years away from buying anything but w/e.

Some sort of VAG diesel should fit the bill nicely.

Volt?

There's also likely going to be a new Prius out before you shop, which presumably will make significant progress on the refinement front. I don't know that stop-and-go brings out the strengths of a diesel, especially with the higher fuel costs factored in.

Doesn't Lexus make some smaller hybrid hatches?  CT200h or something like that?  There's also the Ford C-Max.

No plug in cars. This is gonna be a road trip car. I don't think there are any supercharging stations within like 500 miles of here.

I think the CT200h has the same drivetrain as the 2010+ Prius. I prefer the looks of the Prius in and out

Lexus CTh?

EDIT: You think the Prius looks better?  The CTh isn't pretty, but it's better looking than the Prius at least.  There is a Jetta Hybrid.

Optima Hybrid?

Need something with a hatch. NX300h/Q5 hybrid are perfect but like $50K ATM. Wish the Prius had the Camry hybrid's powertrain. That would check all the boxes.

Whoo I have plenty of experience with those as cabs in NYC. Really shitty interiors. Plus the RX gets the same gas mileage with like double the HP.

If you're dropping $40k on a car, why are you limiting yourself to hybrids? Gas cost is a tiny portion of a purchase price that large.

Whoa whoa whoa buying used. More like $15K. Wifey spends a lil less than her car payment on gas every month so cutting gas costs in half would make a meaningful difference. $1000-1500 a year

Oh, I didn't realize RX 400h's have gotten down to that price.  For some reason I thought those only came out in the last few years so they were near $40k.  Looks like there's some good examples out there for <$20k.

Have you considered a Prius C?  Saw one in blue today, I don't think they look too bad exterior wise.  Pretty crazy gas mileage too.
Title: Re: O God. Am I going to buy a Prius????
Post by: 12,000 RPM on June 22, 2014, 09:45:36 AM
Prius C is a little too tight. 90% of my friends are above average height. Extra room (and more importantly HP) of the regular Prius would be appreciated.

RX sounds good on paper but honestly I hate the looks in and out. I don't like its ride height either. I was never a fan of my mom's RX. I will still check it out though.

I'm thinking we can do the Prius for a few years, then get a used NX300h. That is pretty much the perfect wifey car. Interior looks sexy as hell too (albeit a lil busy).

If the CT200h and HS250h (which are down in the $15k's) are too tight, go with a Prius V.
Title: Re: O God. Am I going to buy a Prius????
Post by: Laconian on June 22, 2014, 10:05:29 AM
It's fuel efficient for its class, but in absolute terms it's not spectacular. You could match the RX's fuel economy pretty easily with a conventional car that rides lower to the ground. Is the MPG figure important, or does your wife just want a hybrid?

My mom's 3rd gen Prius drives like a video game. The dashboard is way too high, the ceiling is way too low, visibility is just garbage. She's happy with the fuel economy and the cargo room of the hatch, but after experiencing the road noise and claustrophobic cabin for years my parents have finally come to the point of admitting that perhaps Toyota sacrifices too much at the altar of fuel efficiency.

Bear in mind that the Prius v is the same engine as the regular Prius but in a bigger, heavier, less aerodynamic package. If it had the Camry Hybrid powertrain, it would be pretty impressive, though.

If you're looking at the RX hybrid but are concerned about the price, how about the Highlander?
Title: Re: O God. Am I going to buy a Prius????
Post by: 12,000 RPM on June 22, 2014, 12:19:05 PM
Prius C is too tight. HS/CT are roomy enough, but I prefer the looks of the Prius to both. Def over the HS, that car is hideous. Highlander is too big... it's just me and my wife now.

Honestly if the Jetta wagon came in a hybrid, that would be great. There are a lot of TDI wagons though. I'm just afraid of diesel prices and maintenance. Plus like 80% of wifey's driving is stop n go traffic. So a hybrid would benefit more to that end.

No hatches, it seems. Saturn Vue has a hybrid version but I'm leery. I'm imagining the interior being absolute shit.

The first-gen Highlander Hybrid is actually smaller than the RX400h, just boxier. Compared to the current RX450h, the second-generation Highlander is about an inch longer and wider and two inches taller.

That was actually a good generation for the Vue, and there's even a full hybrid version. But not many were made before the brand was dropped.

Interior's nice, but the hybrid setup that isn't a Volt is an absolute joke. The "green line" system in GM cars is basically a big alternator.

Plus, no need for one when G37x is always the answer /thread.

Golf TDI is what she needs.

The 2.5 in the '07 "Rabbit" is shit.  A newer TDI will deliver more than twice the mileage in a car she'll feel right at home in.

Even C&D at the time said it was more entertaining to drive than the equivalent Prius model. I'm not saying it's joyful, but in the ultra economy versions of hybrids, you have to look for some bright spots somewhere.
Title: Re: O God. Am I going to buy a Prius????

The Insight's hybrid operation is just pretty crude compared to the Prius -- jerky and clunky, and also with much less electric capability.

Naw not yet. Maybe next year. Your parents experience doesn't sound too good, though I cant imagine it being much worse than the Rabbit compared to the Z. 6/10ths turns in the Z are like 13/10ths in the Rabbit, I'm always recalibrating going between the two lol.

Prius with the "sport kit" is supposedly almost decent....

It feels like a video game. The steering feel is worse than GM MagnetSteers IV. The engine *never* sounds good - just surly CVT growling all the time. The visibility sucks.

What I'm saying is that I think your opinion of the Prius will change dramatically within 10 minutes of driving one.

Either way, Jetta wagen TDI sounds like the better overall choice.

My mother doesn't like cars.  He Accord was merely adequate when new in 2007, but she liked the V6 power and taught suspension.  Her Jetta blows her mind.  Any time we have a guest over, she goes on about her TDI.  She extols the virtues of the car to no end.  She is head over heals in love with this car, and rightfully so.  While it may have leatherette, the interior is really very good quality.  The audio quality is pretty decent for a $25,000 car, and the seats are extremely comfortable.  It drives like an Audi.

You can see my impressions in the TSX successor thread. IMO the TDI wagon is fantastic.

sigh, still want.

I like it a lot more than the prius, if that counts for anything.

The new one coming out is going to have some serious range. How soon are you looking to buy?

Like 2 or 3 years. We're far away. I just noticed that used ones are starting to get down under 20K, so I figure they will be down where I'd be willing to pay ($15Kish) when we're ready.

I'm not crazy about the interior, but for wifey and her commute, it kind of works. Better performance/economy than the Prius, and the same performance as the JSW TDI with way more economy. Unless it drives like total ass, it's kind of a no brainer, especially if I can get one for $15K used with less than like 70K miles.

Some of the "commuter cars" i see in parking lots really kill me. One co-worker drives a Lincoln Navigator or 3er hardtop convertible.
Her husband also commutes to the base here. So any given day one of them is driving the Navigator.

The big pickups, the d00d with the minivan every day, it really boggles the mind how our low gas prices are so different than the driving world everywhere else on the planet.

Look at that statement though - $15k for a used compact with 70k miles? Just as with hybrids the economics of diesels don't wash. Buy an equivalent used Civic or Corolla for 50-60% of that cost...

That's good though - it's called "liberty" which much the rest of the world doesn't have in anything close to what we have here.

It's cheaper to pay the gas for a Navigator than it is to own different vehicles for every occasion. I drive an Explorer every day that averages 18 mpg.  The only reason I have it is because I have a boat and occasionally the kids bring their friends with us.  I would love to own a Volt for commuting, a truck to tow the boat, a minivan for when the kids bring their friends, and a two seat sports car for fun times.  Instead I have an Explorer (and a utility trailer) and an Infiniti G37 to cover all those things in just two vehicles.

Some of the cars I saw at work were not great choices for a commute either. 760li (owned by a chick who was the same rank as I was, current generation), Nissan Pathfinder with roofbox on all the time, enormous Dodge Ram 2500 or something like that, and occasionally an H1. And a weirdo who drove a Z4 top down in freezing temperatures and in the rain.

:hesaid:

In addition for a daily short commute, gas price is inconsequential so it makes sense to take the Navigator.  Both a Navigator and a Fiat will take up one parking spot.

One of the dumbest arguments I hear about pickup trucks is, "I rarely see trucks hauling or pulling anything during my commute".  Well, no shit.  I don't know about you. but I have never towed a 5th wheel or taken a load of firewood to work with me.

I'm not scared of miles at all, my Z is about to turn over 180K and it runs great

Plus with more miles = less depreciation, and a modern car is not much less reliable at 50K miles than it is at 100K miles. I.e. if its crap its crap from day one, if its good it's good for the long haul. Wifey can charge up for free at her job so we are talking 4 digit annual savings on fuel over a conventional Civrolla. So from a cost of ownership POV it's not something I would dismiss

Actually, it's a pretty good argument. The vast majority of pickup buyers don't need in any way, shape or form a 300+ hp, 5,500+ lb battle wagon to get through life.

Or they could rent the truck the 3times per year they actually use it like a truck.
The gas moneys saved the rest of the year would totally bankroll it.

Very excellent point that most people never think about. If the car was a lemon it would have been sold several times instead of hitting 120k with only 1-2 owners.

Edit: okay did the math and that's not too crazy. V8 powarrrr has affected my expectations a lot.

No, it's a pretty terrible argument.  I drove a Ram for 3 years.  Not once did I tow or haul a load to work, but on the weekends I almost always had stuff in the box.  I agree most people who own trucks don't need them, but that's not argument for people not owning them either.  #Freedom

Sure; if people want a truck by all means - naturally I wouldn't ever argue restricting someone's choice on what to drive (I wouldn't mind me a Sierra with the new 420 hp 6.2L) but most people simply don't need them, and considering how much they cost to buy and fuel, it's a discussion point as it concerns personal finance and American indebtedness...

Yea there are a lot of plug in cars; the thing I like about the Volt though is it has the gas engine too, so we wouldn't need another gas car. And with that, it gets decent mileage... like 35 MPG, which is way better than either of our cars now at their best

First car I drove with a learner's permit in hand was the driver's ed Chevy taurus wagon ripoff. It had 4 wheels and a motor.
Why did they insist on two keys for the longest time?

Their turn signal 50-in-one stalk drives me nutz.
