I like the Crown Vic suggestion. Any abundant fleet car fits the bill.
As far as imports go I'd put a used Sentra or Versa in the mix. I think used Mitsubishis are pretty solid too. Also any import with a domestic rebadge (i.e. Pontiac Vibe)

Whenever I go and look at a Nissan, I always pass because they generally are treated the shittiest of all the asian brands. Probably worse than mitsubishis. Plus the CVT's don't always work right.
I think used Mitsubishis are pretty solid too.
Nope. Only solid is car is the pre 2006 Lancer. Those cars are fairly rugged, they don't do well with rust, but they're OK. Stay away from the eclipse.

You do realize I buy these like clockwork with bad engines all the time, right? The Vibe is worth a pretty penny when running right. If it's cheap, it's probably broken.

The Civic that 2o6 posted or a Crown Vic.
I've been down this road (in college, cheap cars), and it didn't work out practically or economically.
And then I've been driving a car I paid $2500 for for three years now.
Texted the guy with the Civic 2o6 posted. Almost backed out because I realized I'd be way low in cash. Low balled him at $1200 and he just said he really needs to sell it and would take it. Hmm...

Civic, duh. With a manual. Or E36 M3.
Crown Vics suck though. Engine sounds coarse, V8 but not very fast, very thirsty for gas, for a car that big the backseat actually doesn't have much room, horrible in the winter where it snows, and the backseats don't fold down making Home Depot runs harder. Bad crash test results too.
My Dad had one which I drove quite a bit and I thought it was a cool cop car but after a few years I realized it was a very crappy car that cops had to put up with.
If its just a car to drive not very often its cool. But as a daily driver jalopy I'd much rather get something else.

Early to mid 2000s Civic
HHR
Mini Cooper
Cheap old Taco/4runner
Outback or Legacy wagon
Volvo wagon?
Anything else? These cars can have a bit higher budget. $6k maybe. I have two different paths I can go down - either a cheap-ish small car that can do SCCA as well as DD duties year-round or a more utility oriented vehicle that is good for roadtrips and camping (nothing to difficult off-road, just gravel roads really). Either one would be nice to have 4 doors and seats.
Mazda3?
I would say a used Versa, but I would never buy one of those.
Clearly the Civic is the best choice (manual only). 4 seats, MPG, super reliable and easy to work on, can blow away random autocrosses in stock form.
Why would you need a pickup or wagon when you have The Road?

Been driving a 2009 Civic (automatic) the past few weeks. Love it. New frontrunner is a similar vintage Si with 6 speed. I think I prefer sedans over hatchbacks and I want something that's small-ish but can still cruise comfortably on roadtrips and fit normal humans in the back seat. If not for that last point, a Mini would be the top choice.
Jeep Cherokee or Izuzu Trooper can meet my original criteria. I think those are the new frontrunners. Cool looking, fits more people than El Camino, can take it camping in Moab.
Trooper is much bigger than the Cherokee. Suggest the first generation with the 4-cyl and a stick. So slow it's fun!

Unless the prices bounced after the new Civic came out, that wasn't the case in the Philadelphia area.
Prices stopped going down once the 9th gen Civic came out. The K20 fanboyism as made prices hold steady, or even raise values slightly.
The pre-facelift ones are noticeable cheaper though. Those are still relatively affordable

He says the price is negotiable, but less than $1800 and he'll keep some of the audio stuff. Clearly he's not expecting $2300 then. Offer $1800 firm if you want the audio, even less if you don't care. Doesn't seem like a bad price. If the engine dies, would be a relatively easy engine swap I'd imagine.

Civic wise, I'd probably go with an EX.

My Sonic has the same 1.4T and 6MT that are in the Cruze, but the Sonic's gearing is taller.
If it's an ECO, it's got the same engine, but a few little nifty tricks (even taller gearing than the regular LT) that save fuel.
However, the Cruze's steering is meh, and the car as a whole is more like an American Corolla, so not very engaging.
Also, stay away from the 1.8L. It's slower than the 1.4T, with worse economy and not as reliable. (Albeit, the Cruze is kinda midpack as far as staying together)
The Civic, I'd avoid the 2012 Refresh cars. The 2009+ Civic is a good car (aside from Sporty beating on his), with not much to go wrong. Sometimes they gobble up coolant and oil, but most Japanese cars do. Thing is, you can probably find a decent Si for about the same price as an EX.
I've seen a couple Si's for similar prices, but they're a lot more rare. So it's avoid 2012, but by 2013 they're good again?
I really like the 2017 Sonics but obviously they're more expensive.
You can get a Sonic like mine. I like mine a lot. LTZ Manual cars aren't super hard to find. Same with the Cruze, avoid the 1.8L. (easiest way to tell is that 1.8L Sonics are 5-speed manuals. 1.4T are 6-speeds)
The 2012 isn't *bad* but it's not great. The emergency refresh did a lot with interior quality, and steering and suspension tuning. I think the powertrain in the 2012 car is basically the same as the 2009-2011 car. But the 2013-2014 cars got a new engine.
What's the RPM in your Sonic at 75-80 mph?
Nice

Either car would be 2008ish, less than 100k miles.

Maybe if I swapped in a liter bike engine. Needs to do 85 mph on highway trips.

Vmax V4. Big displacement and NASCAR soundtrack
As I said in another thread, I test drove a 2009 Mini Cooper S on Monday and wasn't super impressed. Tonight I drove a 2014 Sonic hatch with the 1.8L and automatic. Not bad! Handles just as well as the Mini, wasn't really any slower than the Mini (I wasn't desperate for the 1.4T), and probably is three times more reliable. But man, the driver's seat is a tight fit for anyone over 6 feet tall. I think that's my main reservation, along with the torque converter constantly unlocking on the highway. Otherwise I liked it a lot.

get the turbo.
The extra torque and economy is worth it. Also, the 1.4T is more reliable.
I drove a Civic and a Corolla last Saturday. Civic was great, which I already knew. It drives exactly the way I want a car to drive - firm suspension but smooth over bumps, perfect steering weight and feedback, and plenty of power for everyday driving. I drove the Corolla right after and hated it after about 5 seconds. Suspension is rolly polly, steering is lifeless and overboosted. And it seemed to have less power.
Unfortunately, the El Camino's transmission is gonna put a 2nd car on hold for now. But I'll just look for a Civic when the time comes. I liked the Sonic, but the Civic drives just as well (if not a bit better) and has more legroom up front.
Get an older Corolla XRS. Debadge, put it on steelies and call it a day.

Mini. If I recall correctly, while the Mazda is more reliable, it'll just rust away on you.
