Toni Bou is next level. Jesus fuck, the dude would have to try to lose.

I saved up a short list of maintenance, troubleshooting, and upgrades that all required the tank coming off. They couldn't have packed things any tighter in there.

Bike is all back together and it actually started up, which is always a nailbiter. I've started commuting on it again now that the weather is into the mid 50s, it's so much better than driving.

My bike started up easily which was surprising. The valve check I did a few months ago must have helped a lot. Still haven't ridden it more than around the block. I would have today but it got chilly again. Maybe next week.

Instead of paying $300+ for a motorcycle-specific Garmin or TomTom, I found a $5 Garmin with lifetime maps at Savers + $15 RAM case + $5 Aliexpress clip on sunshade.
And voila...a budget motorcycle GPS. I'll drop some silicone around the seam and it should be water resistant enough for my usual rides.

MX793

It was in the 70s Friday, but with spotty rain showers.  Had hopes it might be time to break out the toys.  Today struggled to get above freezing.  Tomorrow is supposed to be about the same.  Expecting a few inches of snow tomorrow night and Monday...

Dirtbike fired right up.  Might get up to 50F tomorrow, so I might have to go find a non-snowy dirt road to go fuck around on. It'll be wet and dirty, but oh well. The nice weather has me itchin.

giant_mtb

Ope. Nevermind. Weather is not shaping up as predicted. Barely going to get over 40 degrees and a decent chance of rain starting around 1-2pm when it was going to be warmest.

Ugh.

So you have a balaclava. But do you have a balalaika?

No, but I used to have Czech style baccala at my grandma's house for Christmas dinner every year.

Starting next week it'll start being decent again & I'll ride mine a couple of times

This was one of the best supercrosses ever.  Packed with legends, including a young and not yet dominant McGrath (who would break out the following year and proceed to win 7 of the next 8 titles in dominant fashion).

I'm supposed to go on a lunch break ride today but my stupid bike wouldn't let me take the choke off without dying. I'm guessing the carbs are gummed up but IDK. Feels like it's time to buy a new one, because I'm not riding this one as much as I should due to the finickiness.

What should I get? MT-07, MT-09, Honda CB650R?

FI > carbs. So many options to choose from.

XSR700?

That's a good option. I think I like the CB650R over the MT-07/09 due to styling but the XSR700 looks nice.

What I've learned about motorcycles is that while classic cars have a lot of qualities that modern cars are lacking, I think new bikes are simply better in every way than classic bikes.

Makes sense. You have to be sort of a hobbyist/enthusiast to get on bikes, whereas cars are just appliances for the vast majority of people. So bikes have some extra care and personality put into them.

Arguably, new cars are better than old in the same sense that new bikes are better than old.  More reliable, lower maintenance, better handling, more efficient, better brakes, safer...

Depends on the car.
A couple of affordable exceptions.

There's a level of refinement that can numb modern cars unless they're specifically built for enjoyment. Bikes are much more likely to be made for enthusiasts and I think being on two wheels is more connected anyway. So the new bike experience is only improved whereas new car experience is filled by sound deadening and massive touch screens

Yes.  The inherent experience of being on two wheels means that there really aren't any truly "boring" bikes, but some are more characterful than others.

Old bikes have a certain charm and appeal.  Somewhat similar to old cars in that they tend to be a little rougher around the edges.  And if you like to tinker as much as ride, they are much easier to tinker with (in many cases, routine tinkering is required to keep them running well).

Then again, when it's the first warm, sunny day of spring after a long winter and you just want to ride, rolling a modern, FI bike out of the garage, thumbing the starter, and rolling out is so much more satisfying than burning an hour or more of daylight fiddling with carbs trying to get the thing to start and running right.
